First time at Skywest
First time playing here. The first few holes are fairly narrow and require precision. The back nine opens up a bit, water comes into play o a few holes.
The fairways were in good shape as were the greens. Warning- the greens are very soft and therefore pretty slow.
Bunkers are not maintained and mostly mud.
Senior friendly
As a newly retired baby boomer, I am now able to play 18 holes as much as twice a week, and thus have the chance to go around the courses here in the East Bay.
At my age, rather than the challenge of the layout of the holes and undulating greens, my source of enjoyment as well as my buddies' is on well maintained courses where we don't find pockmarked fairways, bald greens and thick roughs.
Having played Skywest off and on the past 15 years, I am pleased to find the course at its best condition ever. Kudos to the greenskeeper!
The fairways which used to be muddy during the winter months (especially the 4th hole) and bald and hard pan on black clay during the summer, are all covered with healthy grass. I was happy to hit my ball on a tee of grass all thru 18 holes. Even the tee mounds are being rehabbed.
The greens have greatly improved! They used to suffer from errant weeds, which caused very uneven rolls and breaks. They've finally have gotten rid of the weed problem and now the ball rolls relatively consistent.
SkyWest as it is flat and fairly wide, is a player friendly course for us seniors. Its length provides quite a challenge for seniors like me with ample use of fairway woods and long irons.
Among all the public courses in the East Bay I think SkyWest offers the best value for the midweek golfer.
Fivesomes at 7am on a Sunday?
Yes, that is correct. We got stuck behind a fivesome on an early morning weekend round. We were a twosome, that joined up with another twosome who were stuck behind the fivesome from the get go.
We rang the pro shop on 7, they came out and played nice. So instead of telling this group that was 2 holes behind, to take a break between 9 & 10 and let our foursome through, and really the next twosome and threesome stacked up behind us as well, they told the fivesome to skip 10 and head to 11. Awesome! They did that, which meant we weren't waiting on every shot again until the 13th tee. I can appreciate being a marshal at a public course is thankless, but the golf course absolutely has the authority to make really slow groups let others through or make them skip ALL the holes required to get back on time, not just one.
The course itself is OK at best. The only real defense is placing the pins where the slope on the green is its most severe. The greens don't have a lot of undulation, just one pronounced slope one way or the other and this can lead to some tricky putts. Otherwise the course is right in front of you, with only a couple holes (3, 11, 13) requiring a committed drive off the tee. The fairways and rough were typical Bay Area, lower-end public, which means there's a bit too much crab grass in with the real grass.
All the staff were really pleasant though; however, because of the basicness of the course and that silly experience, I won't be back.
Great staff
Good people, good course- very windy
Surprisingly Nice
The course was well taken cared of and the price wasn't that bad. I'd come back here again.
A Welcome Change
Hadn't been here for years and came over to play a practice round for the welcome return of the Hayward City Championship. Heard there's a new greenskeeper. They really have done a nice job on putting the course back in playing order. This course has little in the way of aesthetics however it's a difficult layout that will challenge many with the wind and pinched in greens, there's only a couple of true "birdie holes", the rest you can put in the "hard par, easy bogey" category. The front is a long tough layout and the back nine has the holes with character. Overall, for the low price I paid for a midday round on a weekend that only took 3 hours (yes, 3 hours) it's going back in the regular rotation.
Highly recommended
One can use the driver more often here. Wide fairways. Very forgiving golf course.
Absolutely Horrible
Other than the friendly pro shop staff, this course is absolutely horrible. The driving range had all old balls that barely had any dimples on them. The pace of play was horrendous as I left after the 13th hole as I had no interest in continuing what would have been a 6+ hour round. The marshal had the audacity to enforce the 90* rule for the carts but did not do anything for the pace of play. The greens had been aerated and there as no discount. I will not return here ever again.
Greens!
Fun and enjoyable course, but would be hard to return if they didn't improve the greens.
Good condition considering the Weather
After a Rainy weeks and finally got some Sunshine and took advantage of that.
I have played 9 hols previously and this time Full 18.
Been to other courses and they were potty...you know what I mean if you have played.
Skywest course was fairly dry and greens were fair to fast condition.
Rough were little bit longer... hard to get it out some times.
Sand...went in once and good condition as others.
Had fun playing...although didn't play well.
Too soon to play after rain...
Arrived early for a 9:45 start. Clear 55, light breeze. Two days after moderate rain. Signed in and the staff offered an early start since there was no waiting. Went to the driving range, which was not crowded. A little practice on the putting green. Excellent condition. The course is relatively flat, a little long, and has not totally recovered from drought. Thin and bare fairway spots. The greens are excellent. Usually sloped, but not much undulation. Many tee shots plugged, due to the softness of the fairways. One temporary green (I think it was the 11th). The course will probably play better with 5 or more dry days preceding your round.
Good condition
I played this course a lot before I moved out of state. I am visiting now and had a pleasant surprise when I played it. The fairways were in good condition considering it is winter, and the greens were rolling fast and true. I see some improvements being done and would like to come back in the summer ro play it again.
The course had some great features but play was affected by soggy fairway play
The overall course rating was affected by the recent heavy rains in the Bay Area and is not a reflection of any control that the grounds maintenance could have done to prevent the soggy conditions in most of the fairways. Until the course has time to adequately drain I would suggest walking the course as carts are restricted to cart paths only and it is far more convenient to walk directly to your ball. The course had a good mix of water and sand hazards and many tree lined fairways affected your second shot if your drives were not in the fairway- a good feature making the course more challenging. The hole yardage had sufficient variety and length to enable 2nd and 3rd shots that required different club selections throughout. I would definitely play the course again when it has time to dry out and would highly recommend it as agreat value.
Nothing special just golf
This course is just plain simple golf, not much money gets put into it so don't expect much out of it and you will have fun.Greens are pretty slow and ridiculous amount of bird feces on some were there not even really puttable without cleaning a path. But then on the flip side there are also some fun holes that are OK.I wouldn't pay regular prices to play here but a great deal on golf now proves to be a fun time if its a dollar a hole.Better then going to the range and you do meet fun people.
Great value
I was very pleased with the course and the staff. The course is in great shape, despite the drought.
Nice Course
This was the first time I played here. I read some of the reviews about the planes being bothersome, but it was quiet on a Sunday morning. Just a flat straight away course that is pretty wide open.
Fairways and green in pretty good shape except for I believe it was hole #6 ( I could be wrong) where they are redoing the green and have a temporary hole in play.
Ok golf
Course was in good condition. Greens super super slow and rough. Almost needed an iron to putt.
If you looking for a quiet round this is NOT the course for you. Located next to a busy small airport.
Avid golfer
I have played Skywest on and off for a few years now and I have to say the greens are in very good condition lately
