Super twilight
Course was in great shape and played well. Greens were rolling well with lots of break on the back nine. Pace was sooooo slow. Not sure when was last time I played a 5 hour round.
Thank you for the kind review! We will work on pace of play to get your round back to regular pace. Thank you for playing Cottonwood!
Enjoyable Course, BRUTAL Pace
I played this course for the first time on a Tuesday afternoon (1:15p). 5 and half hours later the round finally ended. I was a single golfer with a cart and the group of 4 in front of me would not let me play through even as they hit multiple shots until they liked it. The pace was unbearable.
The course itself was really fun. Fairly open for mishits. Greens in very good condition. We’ll places trees to make approach shots challenging. The staff was super friendly. I’ll give this course another shot because I enjoyed the track, but if the pace is similar, it won’t be worth it.
Thank you for your review! We will work with our staff to try and push pace of play a little faster for a 5-star experience!
My First Pick Place To Play
Cottonwood is my go-to place to play in San Diego. Of course, San Diego has no shortage of incredible places to play...but when you factor in the condition of the course, the price, the location...there are only a few to choose from.
Cottonwood used to be a pretty rough place to play in relation to it's condition. But credit to it's management and groundkeepers, the course is in great shape, especially considering the price. When you can play a round of golf around $30 or so, and have an experience like this, it's well worth every penny.
The course is a fun layout with some challenging trees almost always in play to keep you on your toes. If you like to walk...this course is ideal for walking. (I just about never walk...but the couple times I have...it was about as easy as it gets...I'm just a big baby). The greens serve you tough pin placements challenging for any skilled player.
I'm not a diva when it comes to golf. I can care less that the golf carts don't have GPS. I use an app for all my yardage so it's not necessary anyways. Just give me a cart that won't die on me part way through the round, which I've had happen to me at the far more expensive courses. The driving range isn't fantastic...but if you're just looking to crack the back before you play. It serves it's purpose just fine. There's a chipping green and a couple different putting greens. Even a bunker you could practice struggling to get out of. But if you're looking to dial in your distances with the clubs, just drive 5 minutes further down the road and go to Singing Hill's golf range.
I typically shoot in the mid to low 80's and I love this course. When I'm on my game I can break 80 and get into the 70's. This course is perfect for my level of skill. I've played here with a PGA instructor friend of mine who also loves the challenges of the course. Also, played with friends who are terrible and it's their favorite place as well.
Cottonwood simply provides a great golf experience for anybody looking to have a fun round of 18 in a beautiful environment where the weather is always fantastic and it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Steele Canyon is right next door. No doubt it's a step up from Cottonwood, but you're gonna easily pay twice the price. Is it worth it? If you got the money...go for it. I've played it several times and it's a great course...but I'd rather play 2 or even 3 rounds at Cottonwood and spend the same amount for all those rounds than 1 round at Steele.
Conclusion...Cottonwood is currently my favorite place to go play in San Diego. I love this course and will continue to go back again and again. I think you'll enjoy it too!

Thank you for the kind, well thought out review. We would love for you to check out our app as well that has a GPS. Hope to see you again soon to earn that last star!
Thank you for leaving a review. We would like to know why your review was a couple stars shy of 5-stars. Please email us adow@cottonwoodgolf.com.
Great day Good course
Great value pretty good course. Would play again. Friendly staff we were able to get carts despite a 12 o'clock tee time. Pace of play was a bit slow due to many players but course was in pretty good shape. We had fun and would go back.
Thank you for the 5-star review!
Worth it
Playing this course for less than $40 riding totally worth it. Greens rolling well, tee boxes in good shape and 90% of fairways in good shape. It's hit or miss with how packed it is but either way usually with the $
Great golf value, course is in good condition and you cannot beat the weather in San Diego.
We love our San Diego weather! Hope to see you again soon!
Best bang for the buck
Course was in very good condition. For the most part an open layout. Nice green grass in fairways, greens rolled true. Thick rough. Fun varied holes but not overly challenging. Can get busy. Hidden gem
Thank you for the review! We do have marshals on the course during our busiest time. We will work with our staff to ensure pace of play keeps up in the future. Hope to see you soon!
Good Course, Great Value.
Fairways and Greens in Good Condition, Pace of Play was Decent, Good Walking Course.
Thank you for leaving a review! We hope that upon your next visit, we may earn that last star!
greens too slow
For a public golf course, it was in very good condition. The greens were alot slower than normal. The head on the back was still not open yet due to the covid-19 virus. I would to see the facilities opened up, but I understand the delay. It was windy, but over all I enjoyed the course,
Thank you for leaving a review, David. We appreciate you coming out to play Cottonwood. We have the bathrooms on the golf course closed because we cannot properly sanitize it frequently enough. We are doing everything we can to slow the spread of COVID-19. We appreciate your continued patronage.
slow weekend play
old course run on no budget. employees are trying. condition is fair at best. brutal slow pace of play. solid 6 hours walking on a Saturday afternoon. two foursomes in front of us playing from the black tees and they were all 20 handicap plus. that's not the course's fault but some type of marshal might help. stay away on weekends, but during the week at a good price is worth the walk.
Thank you for leaving a review. We are sorry that your round felt a little slow but rest assured we are doing everything to keep pace of play brisk. We know that we have been very busy and you can expect us to keep our course in great shape and creating fast rounds of golf.
Love this course!!!
We had an epic day playing Cottonwood today. Did I play my best game today? Not at all... but I thoroughly enjoyed every hole. And that should tell yo something, as I’m very connective with myself and my scores. So where is typically be bummed that I shot above my handicap today... I could care less. The tee boxes are in fantastic shape, the greens are near perfect, the greens are a bit hard and fast(which hurt my chip shots a bit), the layout is great though! Super chill course, nice mix of easy and challenging at the same time. They also have 4 different tee off locations for any skill level. My girlfriend needed to play the reds while we played the back tees. The reds are on average 50-70 yards ahead of the white and black tees. She really appreciated this option!
If I HAD TO not pick something... it would be the San traps where all pretty wet and not like hitting out of regular sand at all. But honestly, I could care less. It just added some more data for me to use when I encounter this type of sand later down the road. I enjoyed the challenge. ;)
Much respect and thanx to everyone at Cottonwood Ivanhoe. The course is beautiful and we will be regulars without a doubt! My new favorite place to play in San Diego.
Challenging course if you are not hitting the fairways.
Nice fairways, greens are rolling probably 9.5 to 10. Course is in good shape, sand is covid sand. Pace of play was 5 hours. Tried to get food at the halfway point. They had nothing ready to make the turn. Finished back nine hangry. Carts are optional for 10 bucks only 2 per 4 some. Enjoyed the course.
