Love the new greens!
Apalachee is a local go-to course for me. This was my first visit with the new Champion Bermuda greens and I have to say they were rolling smooth and fast. Very nice! The course itself is in good fall condition, the bunkers could use more sand in some places and the tee boxes could be leveled in a few but overall a very playable and enjoyable course.
slick greens
the new greens were very fast and will only get faster. I recommend the tips when playing this course as the blue tees were way up. Beware of the bermuda rough the ball will sink into, and its' tough to find.
Pro Style Layout!
Very good course and well upkeep......Golf Now made it affordable and able to enjoy!
Nicely done greens!
I noticed greens were changed from Vent to Bermuda. I don't think they are not yet settled completely since they are quite slow. But at least they were not bumpy at all. I guess they will be excellent by the next season. Fairway were well maintained.
Great Shape
Mild summer has left greens in great shape entering fall.
New greens are great.
Course is in excellent shape. First time I played after installing the new greens which, for my money, are the best in the metro area. Huge improvement since last I played.
SLOW GREENS
The new greens were so slow, it was like putting in sawdust! According to staff, they are only cutting the greens every other day. Wish they would have told us before we got to the course! Hole number 8 green looks like a patchwork blanket of sod and sand! I'd wait a while before playing this course again!
Really 3.5 Stars right now, but trending to 4
This review is primarily about the new greens. Played blue tees.
Tees, fairways, bunkers all in good shape considering a big rain the night before.
The new green surfaces were well received for the most part...they look great with a couple of exceptions (#8, notably, just too much shade I guess, they need to figure that one out).
They were fairly smooth, but slow in general and slower against the grain...not as firm as I thought they might be, (you will make pitchmarks, please repair them) very receptive to almost any approach wedge thru 5i...balls will spin back on short irons and staying within 3-4' of the pitchmark on midirons...maybe not a back pin with a long iron, but you can fly the ball to the pin right now. I wouldn't suggest that on firm Champions Bermuda.
If you can hit the putts firm enough (even downhill against the grain) you can score well...If you don't, you will curse the greens as being too slow. I don't think it will play any easier than right now.
The contours and breaks are mostly the same...#5 is bigger, friendlier...if you go long you can keep the next shot on the green now.
If you have played Providence, Lane Creek, or Chicopee (School/Village) then you have an idea of what these greens will be like in a few months...fast and smooth.
Some new sodded areas I assume covering the temp greens...all in all I applaud their efforts on the conversion and I'll be back soon. I'm not thinking they will reach peak form before the growing season for Champions Bermuda ends, but I think they made a smart move for years to come.
Great Greens, Teeboxes...not so much!?!
Overall the course is in great shape. My only complaint is that the tee boxes are far below the quality of the other areas. Many of the tee boxes are set on a slope. It's not a severe slope but definitely noticeable. Also, many of the Par 3 tee boxes had very little grass that wasn't loose. Just disappointed in the general condition of the boxes. Again, not a huge complaint just something I felt didn't get addressed in the renovations.
Temporary greens
Well designed course, but the temporary greens have shortened it considerably. However, management has the price right for the conditions and it was still a challenging day. The fairways are in great shape, the cuts are just long enough to make for a tricky approach if you miss the short stuff.
Good Course, Needs Some Love
The layout of the course is nice, you have your elevation changes and forced draws or fades from the tee. There is some love that needs to be shown to the course and since the new management team took over, they are taking some steps. They are replacing the greens, used to be Bentgrass and now they are going to Championship Bermuda so you might want to wait for them to come in fully before playing. They need to revamp the 2nd hole tee box back tee box as it does not get enough light for the grass to stay. The 4th hole back tee box is always soggy, again not a lot of light coming through. But outside of that, I think if you give it more time it will get better. I enjoy the course a lot, it is a good course for the money you pay. The greens are what I really like, subtle undulations and usually are somewhat quick, but they will be even quicker when the bermuda fully comes in.
Temporary Greens
Golfnow website did not say facility had temporary greens. I was informed by faclity staff, but by then it was too late to play anywhere else. Got soaked by sprinkler system going from green to tee on more than one hole.
Normally a 5 star but temporary greens lower
Currently using temporary greens on all 18 holes. The pace of play was under 4 hours. The staff is very courteous and professional. The range is great but the short game practice area and putting green were closed. When the new greens come in the course will be back up to its normal high rating.
Wait!!
You will need to wait to play this course. Reseeded greens.
Not the best experience....
I've played here in the past and the course has been in excellent condition however this time it was not. They were replacing the greens so it was all temporary greens which would have been fine but the whole time we were out there they had the sprinklers on which was terrible since they hit the temporary greens and on some holes the actual hole was filled with water. Personally temp greens are bad enough but to add the sprinklers to the mix the whole time I do not want to return to this course.
Course trashed!
Putting in new greens. Don't play here until the greens are ready! Temporary greens are awful! Not worth the money!!!
Temporary Greens ... Wish We'd Known !
All of the greens at Apalachee were under replacement, and temporary greens were made in the fairways. I feel GolfNow should relay this info to its customers, to prevent future bad reviews.
I would not have booked this tee time had I known the condition of the course. The greens at Apalachee will not be ready to play for at least 9 weeks.

Temporary greens
GolfNow failed to mention that this course is currently in the process of changing to Champion Bermuda greens. All 18 play to temporary greens. As of 7/7/14.
Worst condition in past 5 years.
Trophy Club of Apalachee used to be one of my favorite courses. I am not sure what happened to the management, but the course was in terrible condition. Tee boxes were awful, green was completely dried (DEAD). Sounds like they will be on temp green starting 7/7/2014. Will try again next year.
