Lake Chabot Golf Course - The 18 Hole Course
About
Situated within the Oakland Hills, Lake Chabot Golf Course offers stunning views that stretch across Oakland, Bay Bridge, and the Lake Chabot area. The course has been a local favorite since it first opened in 1932. Slight changes have been made over the years to improve the layout but it has always maintained its playability. The terrain is hilly, which makes flat lies hard to find. Accuracy and precise shot placement will get you far. The stretch of holes from the 15th to the finish has the best scenery on the golf course. From the risk-reward 15th hole, you can see all the way to San Francisco. The unique final hole is a par 6 that plays to a whopping 673 yards from the back tees. It's a straight, downhill hole with a memorable view.

Golfer Reviews
chabot
Course condition was very bad. Greens were very bumpy and tee boxes were very rough and uneven.
over priced for what the course offers.
would love to see some improvement.
Gem in the Oakland hills
Played LC on a crisp January day for the first time in 25+ years and had a blast. Got paired with a nice older gentlemen who knew the course very well. Staff was really friendly. Course is a lot of up and down terrain so I think it would be difficult to walk. Lots of fun holes including a par 3 that probably drops 200 feet tee to green, a couple driveable par 4's and most of the par 5's are reachable. Finally the famous 18th is a par 6.....yes that's right....par 6. 630 yards but with a great drive and second shot you COULD get a shot at an albatross. Hill Top snack shack was closed the day I played and I did not try the cafe. Next time. Got an unbelievable price from Golf Now. $15 bucks, teed off at 12:15, cart included. What a value! Range is a bit shoddy and you can only hit SW to 6.
Muddy Round w/ Frost Delay...What Renovation?
Played Chabot after a hiatus on this track for maybe 2 or 3 years. Can't say I miss it much. I had heard they spent a lot of money on some facility and course renovations, but that didn't seem too apparent. However, to be fair, it was a cold frosty day in January and was still clearly suffering from the massive rains we had a few weeks ago. Drainage was too good, and we had to play cart-path only, which really made it slow and a pain. Probably should have walked and would have had a more direct round. But, others in front of us were also in carts, so overall pace was slow.
I do like some of the holes on the back side, and 8 & 9. But the front is mainly the same hole over and over from 3-6. Greens are kinda small and generic. BUT, rates are pretty darn good compared to other places. So, if conditions are better, and you're looking for a good round, you could do worse.
I still have a love/hate relationship with 18 (the par 6). I want to love the hole because of the possibility of getting on in 2 if you hit a monster drive tight in the corner and get way down the hill, but its so hard to get a decent lie from that point on until you're on the green. Its really kinda gimmicky.
Counterpoint to bad reviews
I was paired up with a young man, Ben, who was a much better golfer. Ben, thanks for putting up with me, and helping me find my balls! After making my Golfnow reservation, I read the really bad reviews, about the mud bowl, etc, and it scared me. We were restricted to cart path only, so the course is not totally dried out. But, in my opinion, and I am a beginner, the course is very playable. It is true that you will end up with mud on your ball, even when you land it on the fairways, but I can deal with that.
It was not very crowded on the course, perhaps because of the bad reviews. Just wanted to give everyone an update. Loved the course, with its many elevation changes. Did not score very well, but this was not the fault of the golf course!
Huge elevation changes
This course is all about playing in the hills. Several tees have you hitting into a valley and then you need to go back up the hill on the otherside to get to the green, so know how far you hit your clubs and remember to use extra when you are going uphill.
No Marshals
We had a very slow foursome in front of us for 18 holes. They must have had four open holes in front of then. Added at least 45-60 minutes to the round.
For the 5 hours I was there no one from the club house was seeing what was going on.
A good deal dollar wise, but you better not tell your wife a time you will be home.
Lake Chanot 122814
Course was very wet still from past rains. They need more drainage. Spent a lot of time looking for lost balls in the middle of the fairways.
Awful conditions and pace of play
The course is in extremely poor condition, starter paired us with a group who had never played golf before and it turned into a 7 1/2 hour round
Mud puddle
They should have not let anyone out! And they still took my money. Balls that land in the fairway that were completely plugged had to phyically dig out. Greens were a mess I left in the middle of the round due to these poor conditions. I was really disappointed. They should have asked me to wear aerator shoes to help these fairways and greens out. What a shame the damage that is being done there now.
Playing the Mud Links
This was a disappointment from the beginning. The course was a mud hole from tee to green. Even if you hit the fairway you could not find your ball. Walking to your ball throughout the entire course was a mud bath. Fairways were not cut and were probably about 3 inches high playing as a rough more than a fairway. Mowers were out and they made us wait before we could hit, they never got out of the way. The greens took a beating with 1-2 inches of water, ball marks and spike marks everywhere. It took 2 hours to play 5 holes, amazing, we got through 12 holes. The course should have never been opened for play, a disgrace to make someone pay for their round. Never again!!!
I would remove this course from your play list
Courtesy
The greens were so saturated with water that when you step on one section another area will rise up. Common courtesy to close the course instead of allowing people to pay to play.
It is a swamp...you will lose every ball in the fairway.
If it has rained in the last 2 two weeks....STAY AWAY. The entire course and I am not exaggerating, is a swamp. I lost 12 balls in the fairway because they simple disappeared into the wet ground when the landed. The 1st fairway was inches of water and it had not rained in 3 days.... and every hole is like this. They should seriously close this course or they will be paying for major green repairs soon. One green was so saturated the turf was simply sliding under my feet. It was RIDICULOUS! The fact they are charging regular rates with conditions like this is terrible business practice.
Now...when this course is dry...It is fantastic. But until then???
I won't be back until the spring or if it doesn't rain for a month.
Don't play this corse if it had rained with in the past week.
It was a swamp, I thought I was going to lose my cleats! I ask the staff about the conditions and was told the corse doesn't drain we'll. I'd like a credit or refund Golf Now, we couldn't go on after the 3rd hole. My pants, cleats and shirt were covered in mud after the 1st hole.
Gee-Money
Played right after the big rain. Big mistake, the ground was so wet, you had to find your ball after each shot.
The greens were so wet in places, I was surprised they let groups out
The hills of oakland
Love playing here. The par 6 on the 18th is truly amazing! I've heard it's the only par 6 west of the Mississippi. The views on the back nine are amazing! There is a lot of use for a driver and woods and it is a bummer you can't practice those clubs at their driving range. For the price it is for 18 and a cart, it is TOTALLY worth a play!
Great course!
Great course, I will recommend it to my golf buddies.
Over the mountains and thru the woods.
What an adventure this track was! No way you could walk this course unless you brought along a Sherpa!
If you like elevated teeboxes - you'll love this place. If
you like postage stamp greens - you'll like this place.
If you like being able to hit driver on every par 4 or 5 - you'll like this course. And how about a 675 yard par 6 to cap your day off? It's potentially reachable in 2 if
you bomb your drive, so if an albatross is on your bucket list in golf, this is your chance.
Feel Great Bombing at the 18th
My driving distance was average but the par 6 18th hole made me feel like a long drive champion. The downhill fairway made my drive and 3 wood shots so much longer.
Great course with great value!
Still in great shape even after the summer. Only too many golfers are pla ying slow. Very scenic course. Never missed looking at the views every time we play. Challenging course, but a good golfer can still have a hard time playing a low score.
Lots of hills
Friendly people and a fun course to play, some very surprising views.
