Maybe Next Time
This course has potential. It is only a year or two old, so I imagine it will still develop. Plenty of space, large greens, and you get what you see. The fairways have a lot of random undulations, which was annoying at times, The greens had been top dressed. The starter said they were very fast, which was not true. The top dressing caused them to be slower and not much fun to putt on.
Fine golf course
Lakewood National does it right.....both courses are in great shape and you can't go wrong playng either one....
Staff is great....I'll be back...!!!
New
great lay out, but is very new and needs some mature landscaping and trees to enrich the experience and challenges
No Warning on Aerification
The greens were punched but no warning of this online, which is very disappointing. If we had known the greens were in the condition they were in, we would have played somewhere else.
Newer gem in the Lakewood Ranch area
Boy it was hot! It wasn’t too busy when we took off to play about 11:30 AM with a heat index of about 108°. Great practice facility. Staff was very friendly inside and out. Lots of construction going on in the homes around the course. Fairways were in great shape. Greens were medium too fast with lots of undulation-Making them fairly difficult for me. My husband is a 5 handicap and I am a 20. He felt the slope rating was under rated and should’ve been a little bit higher due to the difficulty on the greens. Overall it was a great course and fun to play. Plenty of water for trouble but a fair course overall. Gps and the carts. Decent pro shop and cart girl available. Would definitely play again.
Great
Piper is a fun course. Fantastic conditions, great amenities, everything you'd come to expect from Lakewood National. My favorite track is still the Commander course, but Piper is a great alternative when Commander is under renovations. Can't miss with either option though.
Big time golf court
I can see why the (semi) pro and amateur circuit plays out here. Big greens and rough that will break your fingers. Started the day with the 1/2 sandwich from the tiki hut... tasty. Big range and good balls. My buddy tried to put 3 in his own bag but the ranger stopped him. Greens need time as they are tough to hold even well struck wedges. Greens rolled smooth. Thankfully there were no ranges to warn us of lightning and help with slow play. Awesome cart paths.... well worth the money. Good to see the beverage cart person on the first hole to get all of our drink and hunger needs met early.
A must play if your on Hwy 70 east of I-75.
Big boy track
Awesome course. In fantastic condition. Can tell it’s a new course. Pretty wide open with massive tricky greens. Glad to play before it goes private eventually.
Outstanding Track
I chose to play at Lakewood National as one of my many possible course to join as a future resident of the area. I was paired with a friendly father/son duo, Simon and Adam who play this track regularly. This Club moved from my top 10 to my top 3. Only because I haven't played all of the courses on my list.
Reasons it makes the top 3. The practice areas are in excellent shape, staff was friendly, and the course itself. Of course this only holds true until I play the Commander and the staff repeats their willingness to be friendly.
I played the Piper Course. This track can play as long as you wish. It gives you every opportunity to utilize all your clubs. I haven't needed to hit Driver this much in years and I like to hit my Driver. The fairway and green conditions were excellent and the greens had recently been pinched/sanded. The course layout wasn't difficult but is demanding. Poor shot selection can be very tragic. I experienced a full on Shakespearean tragedy on #16 due to poor shot selection.
Bunkers and Greens. All fairway and greenside sand is very playable. However, avoid aiming at all fairway bunkers within reach, even if you think it'll add distance to your approach. Greenside bunkers are another animal all together. Land in a greenside bunker and it could be an easy up and down or an extremely challenging shot depending on pin placement. As for the Greens. Well, I believe these to be some of the most challenging I've ever played. Don't go firing at the pins or thinking the middle is just fine because you'll be surprised. The Piper greens are its main defens.
Here's the one bad thing I experienced. My GPS watch wouldn't pick up the course correctly and the cart GPS sucks. I could barely see it and I had it adjusted to full brightness. When I could see it the yardage wasn't trust worthy. Compared it with playing partners range finder several times.
I'm a 10 handicap for the Piper. So, take my review for what's worth to you. No matter you level, as long as you're not a club throwing perfectionist, you'll enjoy this track.
