A Mixed Review
We played on a very hot afternoon and we were fortunately warned ahead of time to bring our own water. The cups were raised so you didn't have to touch and remove the flagsticks. Other restrictions were in place (no beverage cart) because of COVID- 19. The course has a terrific layout but the greens are hard as a rock and do not hold most approach shots. Most people play the blue tees (6134 yards) or the black tees (6499 yards) and the course is extremely challenging in windy weather. Pace of play was somewhat slow as expected. The practice facility is excellent. The course will be significantly better in a year or 2 after fairway/green maturation and completion of the housing construction.
Extremes- way crazy
We paid top dollar for this round it was hot, no water, they shut off the ice and water machines and would not take cash for bottled water. The staff couldn't touch anything and the holes were lifted so you only bumped the edge and didn't pick you ball up in the hole or touch the flag.. they should have just shut down. The course was rock hard you couldn't hold a green no matter what. It was 85 degrees not a tree in sight and no water or bathrooms. Staff just looked at you like they didn't understand English when they sent us out with no water. not fun too expensive, construction going on so all you heard was the beep beep beep of large trucks and cement mixers. No fun
Breezy Golf
The wind is always a factor on this course due to the layout and constant continued construction! The greens are hard and tough to play for ever getting a one putt. Stay away from fairway sides that can easily bounce in the waters due to fairways slanting. Entertaining to play as well as challenging!! Fun times over and over no matter how often one plays the course!!
Lakewood Piper
This is an awesome course , fairly difficult with the very fast greens. You need to play it a few times to get the feel for it. The ball rolls off the green real easy with the pin placements. Will play again.
Beautiful Track
Fun experience from the range to the 18th green. Great staff and facilities. A bit slow but the course is really fun. Huge fairways that are hard to miss but placement is crucial. Greens are a bit goofy but true.
Excellent companion to Commander
When a single architect is responsible for multiple courses at a single facility, it's understandable to worry that they might end up being too similar. No such concern at Lakewood National, which is particularly impressive, given that Arnold Palmer Design Company's Brandon Johnson had to work within fairly strict corridors imposed by developer Lennar on both layouts.
Whereas the Commander has more concave green complex features, Piper's tend to divert imprecise shots away from the target, placing an extra premium on iron play. To compensate, Piper's tee-to-green features are a little friendlier than Commander's.
Especially for a brand-new course, Piper is in wonderful shape, and benefits from the same genial staff as its older sibling. If you can forgive the sounds of home construction during your round, you'll find that this new addition makes Lakewood National one of Florida's best multi-course facilities with public access.
Nice Play
For a new course, just opened in Dec 2019, it is in very decent conditions, some of the fairways were dry however greens were in excellent shape and rolled true.
There were not ball washers on every hole?, and the cart did not have a ball washer
Carts are GPS enabled and the yardages were spot on
No restrooms, port a potty’s for now
This course will only get better in time, looking forward to playing again
Big Layout Doesn’t Equal Big Expectations
The Piper Course has two things going for it. Fairways are huge and the greens are rolling and won’t hold a decent approach shot. To be fair I played on a windy day so greens not holding was even more problematic The golf course is still maturing so I would suggest finding someplace else for the next few years. At $125 it isn’t a very good value. The practice area is excellent. Club house is very nice and pro shop is well stocked.
Very blah
For 130.00 bucks , it was a very boring course. Greens putted great but were missing the windmill and clowns mouth. Course was in good shape and staff was very friendly. Tons of construction going on and 6.00 beers. Maybe in a few years it might have a little character. But not now.
Excellent New Golf Course
Excellent new course. My wife and I played on a very windy day before a storm came in. The staff did a great job getting us off a few minutes early. The course is excellent and very, very challenging in 20+ mph winds. I would love to play in calmer conditions. Best greens in the area. A lot of home construction in the area so noisy and dusty. Be forewarned. No bathrooms so my wife had to use a portalet which she wasn’t too thrilled with. We saw the beverage cart twice in 18 holes. We played in 3.5 hours. We liked the course and will be back next year. It’s clearly one of the best courses in the area but could use some maturing.
My worst golf experience in the USA!
I played the Piper course on Feb 24 with 2 other friends and I have to say from the moment we got to the course our total experience was terrible.
From our initial contact at the bag drop to the two people who were at the pro shop checking us in their attitudes were confrontive and condescending.
My wife and I rented clubs at $69 per set and upon getting to the practice tee I noticed that my left-handed set did not include a driver.
I went back to the pro shop and talked to another person who handled this very professional and apologized for the oversight.
I do have to say that he starters were friendly and informative which was a positive at this point.
After getting to the 3rd hole I reached for the 7 iron and discovered that the club in my bag was a ladies shafted club. As I looked at the other clubs in the bag I also noticed that the PW was also a ladies shafted club.
Since the 9th and 10th holes do not return to the clubhouse I had to play the entire round with these clubs.
After the round I let the pro shop know and all they said was sorry...you should have called us to let us know.
Also, this is a very new course surrounded by construction and on this very windy day it was like playing in a dust bowl.
Finally, there are no washrooms on the course, only portapoties.
So for what turned out to be over $400 US our experience here was, as I said before, our worst golfing experience in the USA ever.
Really nice place all around.
Place was great! A lot of construction going on but did not effect play at all! Conditions where fantastic. Would play again tomorrow.
Only black eye is the head starter needs better manors, being rude to two grown men because we dropped the cart in the wrong spot after our round. I even offered to move it. Relax.
Great new course!
Third time playing this gem. I have been a big fan of its sister course - Commander, but I think this one is better and more challenging. Amazing how two courses on the same property can have such different feels. Piper has lots of room off the tee, but every approach shot is filled with challenges - bunkers, water, elevated greens etc. Greens are huge with tons of undulations.
As residential building around this course is just beginning, wind is a major factor. Today was especially challenging with gusts up to 40 mph. Lots of dust from construction made things a bit less enjoyable.
I would not recommend this trach for the mid - high handicap golfer. I cannot see it being that much fun for them. Course is relatively pricey unless you get it on a Hot Deal.
Great Challenge
Playing the Blue tees this course gives intermediate players all they can handle. It is brand new and still coming into its own but it only needs growing up not anymore to make it great now.
Very enjoyable day
The course is only a few months old. It is fantastic. Greens are hard and fast but true. Fairways are open. Approach shots need to be precise. Lots of strategically placed bunkers.. As this course matures it will become better and better. Cant wait to play it again.
Great New Course
Great new course
Very undulating greens
Greens very firm because course is new
Can't wait to play it again
New Course is tough with hard green
You need to play to fat parts of the greens, as very hard, elevated & lots of run offs on edges of the greens.
Generous driving area but need to be precise with approach shots.
This will be a great course , when it gets matured.
Green are fast & sloping, so tough to be aggressive, as they seem to always roll out a extra 3 feet,
Could use more rest rooms for Seniors & Women.
Very nice course.
The course is new so will only improve as trees mature. Very challenging big greens with lots of undulation.
