Butternut Creek Golf Course
About
Mountain views can be found on all 18 holes at Butternut Creek Golf Course, located in north Georgia. Elevation changes, mounds and undulating greens are all part of the challenge on the Bill Watts-designed golf course. No two holes are alike and water comes into play on 13 holes. With four to six tee boxes on every hole, the golf course can play as short or as long as you like. Butternut Creek is owned and operated by the Union County Recreation Department.

Don't trust the cart GPS yardage
Enjoyed the round great course would love to play it again; however, the GPS in the cart consistently gave me incorrect yardage other than that everything was excellent.
Butternut review
Course was in good condition and greens roll very nice. Too many uphill blind tee shots. You have no idea of where you are hitting the ball. I'm fine with a couple of blind shots but this course goes overboard with them. Seemed like 70 % of tee shots were uphill and blind. Not very enjoyable. I shot 82 from the tips but it was not enjoyable hitting tee shots.
Best bang for the buck
I have played many courses around the country and this is the best one for the price. The carts have GPS. It is mountain golf with a lot of elevation changes and that adds to the beauty of this well maintained tract. I live an hour away from this course but it will now be my course of choice when I do have time to play.
Great shape
This is a beautiful and challenging coarse. One of the best ive played in Georgia. Id recomend it to anyone that wantin to play in that area
Great public course
Beautiful clubhouse, carts and course. Best public course I have ever played. Pace of play was slow because of three ladies who spent a lot of time looking for balls. With GPS control staff should have come out and hurried them up. They had the whole course of golfers backed up. Because we never caught up to them on tee box, it made it hard to pass. They seemed oblivious to their slow play effect. Other than that, great day.
Can't believe it's not private
Perhaps the finest public course I've ever played! Gorgeous setting in the north Georgia mountains and maticulously maintained. Definately worth the drive. No driving range is the only negative.
Wonderful setting.
This golf course offers many of the features a player is looking for. Friendly and helpful staff, great course conditions, challenging holes and good pace of play. Relaxing environment. I look forward to playing it again.
Great course
The course was in excellent conditions. Buddy, the golf course host was superb.
A different challenge at every hole
Beautiful views, great golf, friendly people- a great way to relax!
Great Course in Northern GA
First time playing this course, but not the first time playing in this area. This course offers probably the best bang for your buck in a 50 mile radius of Blairsville ($30 for 18 holes w/ cart on a weekday morning). The golf carts are all new and have built in GPS technology (really nice). The course was in really good shape, with pretty well maintained fairways and well tended greens. The hills are challenging, as there are quite a few blind shots. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone looking for a good course and a great value.
Only downside was that we played mid-morning on Thursday and had wait for the ladies league to pass through hole 1 before we could tee off (this also added at least 30 minutes to the round as we waited on almost every tee box).
Great Muni!
Unbelievable course with lots of fantastic views and memorable holes. My husband and I will definitely visit this course again on our next trip to the mountains.
Great day of Golf
The course was fun but challenging. A great Mountain Golf Course. Would recommend it to any one.
Scenic Course
From the opening hole, this course spoils you with spectacular views. The facility was very surprising for a county owned operation, and the courtesy of the staff was fantastic. I will definitely be back!
Hoping this was just a slow day
We waited at every single tee box. Most waits were 5-10 minutes. A few waits were hit the 15 minute mark. We left after hole 13 when we realized the round was going to take about 5 hours to complete.
Wonderful Views
Being a holiday, I expected a course packed full of people looking to have a good time. While the pace was a little slow, the views made my group not mind at all! The course is owned by Union County and is one of the better municipal courses I have played. I absolutely love the elevation changes and the views are too plentiful to mention just a few. Everything about the course, from the staff to the conditions made for a pleasant day. I will definitely be back!
Lots of elevation changes
I've played this course several times and it's a great bargain. they also provide GPS in the carts, which is a nice feature
Lacking rules
The people playing did not wear appropriate clothing for a golf course...shirts out, cargo pants, jeans, hats backward etc. Furthermore, there was no one on the course to move play along. The people in front of us were fishing for balls in creeks AFTER they holed out.
A Decent Muni
Butternut is a pretty decent municipal course as muni's go. We finished our 18 holes 34 minutes ahead of standard pace yet we kept getting pushed by some 'speed' guys. I guess they wanted to hurray home for their naps. But this is not a reflection on the course or staff. The restaurant was closed so we didn't get a chance to try it. The gentleman at the pro desk was very friendly and informative. The pro shop is in a modern building with a great locker/restroom setup.
A note to guests. If a local invites you to play with him-her and it is not your 100th time playing the course, do NOT accept or offer any bets. There ore many blind shots on the course and local knowledge makes any wager a sucker bet in favor of the local. The elevations are also a challenge. All-in-all it's a good track and a friendly place.
The course was in great shape and the greens were pretty brisk but true. The greens can be tricky but they are not unfair. Some of the views from the tees are awesome. You will be presented with plenty of challenges from the starting spots and the design of the holes play plenty of tricks with your eyes. Use the readouts on board the cart to get your bearings.
We will return to gain more of that local knowledge. Thank you to the staff at Butternut Creek.
love elevation changes
Being a south Florida flatlander, mountain courses are such a treat. Every club in the bag got a workout. Gps cart was great as was staff.
Anxiously await next visit.
