Butternut Creek Golf Course
About
Mountain views can be found on all 18 holes at Butternut Creek Golf Course, located in north Georgia. Elevation changes, mounds and undulating greens are all part of the challenge on the Bill Watts-designed golf course. No two holes are alike and water comes into play on 13 holes. With four to six tee boxes on every hole, the golf course can play as short or as long as you like. Butternut Creek is owned and operated by the Union County Recreation Department.

Love this course!
I drive an hour to play this course a couple of times each week. The course is in outstanding shape and is a joy to play. The course is hilly, but it is also a good course to walk if you don't mind the hills. I particularly appreciate that the staff and other golfers welcome walkers. It's one of the few courses I play where I see a lot of women golfers. Other courses, particularly municipal courses, could learn a great deal about how to create a great course by visiting this course. And, on days when the ball just doesn't cooperate, what beautiful scenery!
not in a while
I had not been here in probably 4 years and I was very impressed.
The fairways were nice and you could hit the ball from there. the greens were in great shape but very curvy. A tiny bit on the slow side especially if you were below the hole. It takes me over an hour and a half to get here but I am going to make it a point to come again. I completely enjoyed my afternoon.
Great Scenery, Fun course
Though it was a good distance to travel for me, the scenery on the drive up was well worth it. The course offers a good variety of wide open fairways and holes that'll make you second guess your driver if it isn't accurate. Great course, especially for the $16 I paid through GolfNow.
Great greens and lots of hills.
Nice pro shop. The grille was closed. No practice range. Nice practice green. The carts have GPS and the score card provides diagrams of the holes with playing tips. Play is mostly straight up and down the "two club difference" hills with strategically placed creeks and ponds, so pay attention to your GPS and score card diagrams with distances to the hazards. Many of the fairways are tree lined but are pretty wide with very little rough, so the course is pretty forgiving (unless you really spray your shots), and plays on the easy side of moderate in difficulty, with the exception of number 11 that requires either a great drive and a very good approach shot, or great care not to find the pond guarding the green. (I found the pond) The best feature of the course is the well maintained small to medium sized greens that are soft and receptive, smooth and reasonably quick, sometimes undulated and tilted but most very accessible to up and downs, a pleasure to putt, and the reason for the four star rating.
Butternut Creek is hills with scenery
First, I think Butternut Creek is more hilly and challenging than Kingswood (and their tee times are earlier). The first time playing this course is for learning the shot areas for risk and reward and I'm surely looking forward to my 2nd time. I give 'atta boys' for the staff, course layout, course maintenance, and carts with GPS. There are some wide open fairways and some holes require tread the opening between the woods, and if it's and up the hill hole, be assured you'll be coming down the hill for the next hole. The greens have personality with speed and undulation and you need to keep heads up for the streams and ponds. It is a 'ladies friendly course', the day we played there were plenty of ladies and couples playing the course. The friendly staff sets the mood for players to 'play nice' on the course. Two pieces of advise, before playing this course, practice your uphill and downhill swings techniques and when GPS shows dogleg...it's no joke. This should be a ' got to play course' when in the area.
Good play with beautiful views.
Course is easy to moderate with some long first and second shots. Rollings hills with great views. Enjoyed the GPS in carts. Grass is in very good condition and well maintained. Couple of tricky holes that are out of view due to the hills. Overall, I'll be back!
What a turn-around!!
I guess I waited too long to go back to Butternut Creek. Last time I was there was over 3 yrs ago and what a drastic change to "really nice" from average. The greens are super. The fairways are the same. The rough is a little rough, but that's why they call it "Rough". Have to admit, for a "muni", it was wonderful. The people in the pro shop and out by the carts were very helpful and respectful.
A real pleasure to be there.
Great condition - enjoyable golf game
Course witth many variatios to layout. Overall fairways and greens in excellent condition.
Great Experience
Overall the course was in good condition, the greens needed a little bit of work, but a heavy rainstorm came in the day before so it was understandable. I will definitely be making a return visit.
Great course.
Very well maintained, lots of interesting holes, a good challenge for the medium handicapper, staff super friendly, clubhouse really nice. Will return for sure.
Well maintained, fun mountain course
Played this course for years and love the new clubhouse, grill and GPS carts. Wish they would add practice facilities but not sure where they could since bounded in on all sides. The greens were perfect this weekend!
The 123 slope rating doesn't fit the tight fairways as there are only a couple of generous tee shots available. Still it's a fun course.
If you like roller coasters, you will go bonkers for this course. DO NOT be drinking and driving the golf carts. Navigating up and down some of the cart paths is a challenge for the most skilled of drivers. The course is in great shape despite all the recent rains and with the greens close to the next tee, this course can be played much quicker than most.
Butternut is a fun and challenging course
Butternut is a challenging and fun course! Very hilly, and the conditions were good to very good. I invited friends to play last year, and they enjoyed it; and had others joined me this year, and the reaction was similar. We usually play together in the "low country" of South Carolina and it was an enjoyable change. And, the staff was great!
Fun and challenging course
Lots of height fluctuations, tough to read greens, but you get rewarded/penalized for your shots.
Great course.
While they were still working on maintenance with earthmovers, it is obvious that they are working hard to improve an already beautiful course, The personnel are cordial.
Well maintained with great views
The course was more than I expected, very well maintained, hilly, challenging with great views on alot of holes.
Very challenging
This a very well manicured course......would love to play it more often
Fun course to play!
This golf course is very fun to play. The course conditions were great! A lot of up hill and down hill shots.
Rained a lot recently but course was good.
For a county owned course it was great. Considering that North Georgia has had about two weeks of off and on hard rain the course was in great shape. I will return rather than play a few courses closer to home. GPS equipped carts really helped as this was our first time at the course.
Great shape, very courteous staff
Booked the golf and the course actually charged me less for my daughter voluntarily. Course was in fabulous condition. Will be playing there every year that I am on vacation.
