About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

This couse is well layed out.
Aside from the new greens that are still developing, the course is in great shape. The greens may interfere with putting to some degree but are not show stoppers. We enjoyed our golf outing at this course and will return. Thanks Golf Channel.
Is it possible to give zero stars? If so, this would be that review.
We won't talk about the staff, because if all I had to do was apologize to people before they play, and listen to people gripe and complain when they left, I'd be in a bad mood too.
If you enjoy the challenge of putting, don't go to Lanier. Golf is all about putting. Half your strokes are putts. Not at Lanier golf club...
This is quite possibly the worst managed golf course from a superintendents perspective, in the history of managing a golf course = ever!
They closed the course late last summer to go from bent to bermuda on the greens. They re-opened around mid August 2012. What a disaster! They painted the greens "green" and on the #1 fairway I was really excited on my approach. Then I got to the green... whoah!!!
Well, fast forward 9 months... May 2013 - nothing's changed!!!
Do yourself a favor and do not go play golf at Lanier Golf Club.
New carts
They have fairly new carts. The greens are a disaster in my opinion. For the rate they charge, the greens should be in better condition. But I cannot say for sure that I missed very many putts due to the condition of the green.
Terrible!
I have never played a course in this poor of a condition. They should either close the course or charge $20 a round.
Unfriendly Staff but Beautiful Course
Started off with a bad experience when the staff informed me that I could just play a 2-some, and that he was pairing me with another group since I didn't pay for 4 players. Really came off as rude and it was clear that they had put the tee times back to back to back, and esentially overbooked.
To make a long story short, we ended up breaking away from the group they set us up with, as they were regulars and said they have to go through the same procedure every week.
The course itself was nice and maintined. The greens are full of sand as they are changing out the grass, but we were warned beforehand and given a discount.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this course based solely on the bad experience at the beginning, which kind of ruined the experience.
Good course layout and friendly desk personnel.
As a first time golfer at Lanier I really enjoyed the track. It has character, with course management required on several holes. As advertised the greens were not in good shape as they are changing grass types to bermuda and it hasn't grown in yet. I assume when the course receives some rain and warm weather the greens will mature.
This course needs some work
The course definitely needs some renovation. They said they were replacing the greens with a different grass, and in order to do so the greens were covered in sand a a half-inch thick at some spots. The fairways had random mudholes with shovels sticking out of them like someone just left unfinished work for the day. They lowered their prices to compensate for this, but for me they did not accomplish that goal.
In dire need of maintenance
Before playing this course, I was made aware that the greens were recently redone (within the last year). However, I was shocked that they would even open the course, let alone charge us $30 to play on it. The greens were not greens at all, but actually more resembled sand traps. In addition, the rest of the course (fairways, bunkers, etc) was in absolutely terrible condition. I have trouble believing that this course even has a maintenance crew at all. That said, the course layout is actually quite appealing and I could see this course being very fun if it were run by someone who cared even a little about the shape of the facilities.
Greens needs to finish healing
They just recently resurfaced the putting greens. They are real sandy. They need time to recover. Looks as if will not be long but should be a little cheaper green fee due to this.
Where r the greens?
What happened to the greens? All that time last year closed to replace all the greens has not paid off. There was not one green that you could putt on. What's the point to get on a par five in 3 and then 3 putt?? Call me when you have put table greens, ill be at Hampton or achasta!
Greens are unplayable and the course generally needs maintenance
Tee boxes are fine. Fairways are okay but all were very, very wet. Several fairways had open irrigation valve boxes or the boxes were dug out of the ground for maintenance-the box was left next to the hole with shovels stuck in the ground like the workers were on break but this was the weekend and I didn't get the feeling this was the case.
There were several tee markers missing which made play difficult for a player new to this course. The brakes on my golf cart needed attention-the brake wouldn't lock on a hill. The score card that was on the cart for me when I got the key was partially used.
This was the first time I played this course and it was sometimes difficult to figure out which tee was next and how to get to it from lack of direction signage. It would help if there were a few markings pointing players to the proper tee following the green.
I couldn't find any restroom out on the course.
Of the few ball-washers I could find, they had broken parts.
Players are not respectful of the course, many bunkers were not raked after use.
I paid $27 on Golf Now and it was too much. $15 is appropriate for current course conditions and lack of maintenance.
The greens might be ready this fall?
The staff were very friendly.
Maybe next summer
The course lay out could be enjoyable, but that didn't even remotely make up for how bad the greens are right now, they shouldn't be charging more than $15 to play out there right now.
I like various width and elevations.
As it is announced, patting green is not smooth. However each hole and course is enjoyable.
The course has a good layout, but I didn't see the greens alert.GREENS unplayable
I like this layout it has some challenge to it,when the greens come in it will be one I would play again.
YOU CALL THESE GREENS?
I was charged $30 for a discounted rate to play. They did have an explanation mark listed, but it wasn't till I received my confirmation that it was mentioned that the "greens" were "NOT UP TO LANIER'S STANDARDS" The actually weren't up to standards to even be called greens. The round should be no more then $15!
Greens need work
Great course, nice place to play, maybe this springs when the greens start growing, it will be ok, but in March 2013, they were in bad shape, real bumpy.
great sand in the bunkers
I have played here in the past and it is usually a good course, they lost all of the greens last year and it was like putting on the surface of Mars
Lanier Golf Club
Winter conditions and the greens are in the process of being replaced. If you hit the green in regulation just give yourself a par and move on.
Don't waste your money right now.
The greens are as bad as I've ever seen. You can't even putt on them. It's not worth what they are charging. Save your money and play some where that you can actually attempt to make a putt.
