About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

Could Be A Nice Course
Greens were in terrible shape, all sand with patches of 'grass' here and there that affected putts greatly. It was like putting on a bumper pool table. Course has great layout and fun to play, definitely needs work on greens.
A fine old course that has suffered.
After having issues with the greens in 2012 they have supposedly installed new grass on the greens but the only thing I saw was Poa Anna and sand. If the greens fill in it will be quite some time before they are playable.
Awful greens
This course is currently changing their greens. It should not even be open. The greens are all sand with random sprigs of grass. There is no way to putt on them. The course should tell this to Golfnow so golfers would know this before booking. They also made me pay an extra cart fee for my girlfriend to ride with me even though they were not busy. I wouldn't have minded that if it was a busy day. I feel they should have let her ride for free especially knowing the condition of the greens I was about to play on. It was a very bad experience. I would stay away from this course for a while.
Greens Were Horrible!
This was booked by me on Golf Now for a group of 4 and I wish I had known the shape the greens were in. I figured the course would be wet from all the rain so nothing they could do about that but the dance floor was all sand and weeds. Horrible! The staff wad friendly but unless they make some major upgrades I will not be back.
Good track
Good Layout Greens in Horrible Shape Course should be closed or Temp Greens used until Greens Recover. Not worth any price to play as of now
Needs some Serious Work!
I booked this course with fun in mind and invited three others to join me but was very disappointed with the course conditions. To be fair some of this was due to all the rain we had days previously but the greens oh I mean sand we putted on was horrible. The staff was extra friendly!
Beware - sand greens!
Like a lot of golf courses in GA, last year Lanier replaced their bent grass greens with a new grass better suited to endure the heat of summer. Unfortunately for Lanier, the greens did not come in and they've been left with bumpy greens largely consisting of sand. Unfortunately for us golfers, and unlike other courses with green replacement issues, Lanier fails to alert us of the near unplayable state of their greens when we book our tee times. In its best condition Lanier is overpriced and there are better venues from which to choose. In its current state it should be avoided altogether.
Actually course in good shape...except for greens.
Good course and layout....but new champions Bermuda greens mean forget putting...the greens are mostly compacted sand and small dimples of bermuda clusters that make putting impossible...I just counted two putts when reaching green.
Worst Golf Courst to play. Greens are horable.
I would never play this course again. Greens does not look as Green it looks like sand with grassy patch.
I would not recommended this course any other friends.
Well laid out older course but the greens are inexcusable.
I've played here several times over the last couple of years and each time is worse than the last. The greens are the worst I've ever seen and completely unplayable. They've also cut down too many trees. It seems almost barren now. Very sad to see it in such shape.
Putting green
All 18 putting greens in poor condition. Not taken care of at all. I've play far much better course for the same price.
Play this course ONLY if you skip putting
Greens are as bad as reported. We paid $12 which is all it is worth. The upside is there is a lot of privacy as there are very few players. Downside is you can not putt on the greens, but that is OK if you play a non-putting game like we did. If the ball is within a pin radius of the cup then it is an automatic 1-putt. Outside is automatic 2-putt. Of course, you can attempt to putt but you will just have to get lucky.
Greens Are Gone
Sorry to say that what was once a great track has become unplayable. the greens are completely gone. They may eventually return who knows but I would call first. The cart paths are a disaster. As a past member I know how it once was and although I know the times have been rough on the owners people need to expect to play a game that resembles golf and this course does not satisfy that.
Not Very Imrpessive
I played this course for the first time. The course advertised new greens were installed and expected average condition greens. The greens were in poor condition with little grass and a lot of sand and grass patches. I have had better success putting on aerated greens. Fairways and tee's were in pretty good shape.
Greens, what greens
The course will say that the greens have been replaced, etc, however replaced with something other than grass. Might be due to planting them to late and they never came in (with mild winter unlikely). We played there sat , and played the course as if they were all temp greens...ie. hit the green and auto 2 putt. Have never seen this course in this shape having played many times over the last 3 years. Unless you get a large bucket price of 15.00 or less,,avoid.
Greens are in terrible shape. $28 is overpriced overpriced because the greens are unputtable.
Staff is super friendly but greens are diseased and unputtable.
Updated review.. I have reviewed this course very poorly before
My last written review of this course was not favorable. In fact, this course received the lowest rating/worst review I could imagine providing. I looked on Golfnow, and the rate to play was $8.50. Yep, eight fifty. So, I decided to take a chance.
The greens were much improved since last year. In fact, they were very firm and rolled true. Very nice. However, the course itself is still a dog. Let me give you but one example.. Hole number 12 is a short dogleg right. As you approach the green to the right; here, all evidence you need to see that these folks do not give a rip about course maintenance. You'd never EVER see any course with a playing area in such disrepair/non-repair. And for as long as I've come here (since 2008), this area has been similar, but now worse...
And, you'll play this place in around 2 1/2 hours which is just not the way a full 18 holes is supposed to be played.
So, in summary... Greens much improved. Course? Not so much... If you're able to get a fantastic deal ($20 or less) and there's no other course available, you might want to play here as an option, BUT I would not EVER pay full price for this course.
Do Not Waste Your Time!!!
Over the past few years, I have played Lanier Golf Club a hundred times or more. I've always paid the going rate of $35. So, I've paid these people $3,500 to play their course. About a year ago when they reopened with greens they said "were great" I paid full rate and the greens were literally sand pits. They were awful, the experience was awful and the staff was rude!!!
Today, I called and talked to a lady. I said "I haven't played there in a year, would be willing to try and if I like I'd post a positive review. I've played there tons, always at the retail price and have never asked for a refund, although I deserved one last time." She said, and I've heard this before "Oh, I hear the greens are great!" Then she said "Sir, I'm tired of hearing that word [awful]. What is your question?"
Talk about arrogant, dismissive staff!!! I will not go to this course. I would recommend people stay away from this place. There are too many good courses with people that realize theirs is a retail business. You can't treat customers like this and stay open!!
MY RECOMMENDATION? STAY AWAY FROM LANIER GOLF CLUB!
Greens still need more time
Greens were redone about a year ago, thought I would try them out for the first time. Greens are like a trampoline and take no ball divots. It's best to run balls up on the greens or sky them. A minor thing.....I couldn't figure out the green mowing strategy. It's like they didn't mow around the outside curvature of the greens, just straight lines and the outside edges ended up having jagged stair step edges. Never like greens with grass at different heights. Overall the course is not bad, I just think the greens need more time. I'll try again next year, until then, I'll recommend to friends to try somewhere else.
