Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Lanier Golf Club in Cumming is a public championship course that is located just a half hour north of Atlanta. Opened in 1970, the course has undergone many renovations over the years that have increased the playability of the original layout. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels but it still offers a challenge, which is why in its past it has been chosen as a Georgia Amateur qualifying and U.S. Open qualifying course. There are tall trees along the fairways that will require a bit of accuracy and a heavy smattering of strategically placed bunkers also present a challenge. The occasional water hazard also comes into play. In addition to the golf course, Lanier G.C. has a driving range and short-game practice area that is open to the public as well.

No grass on greens
Overall I was disappointed in the greens -- they were completely gone. They were pack with sand and had painted the sand green but there was nothing there buy sand. No grass. I wish I would have know this prior to booking.
NO GREENS
The Course should be closed! The Greens are hard packed Dirt and Sand and colored Green. They are un-puttable. Rest of the Course is in good condition so when you hit the Green, try a putt then pick-up, take a 2-putt and move on to the next hole.
New Putting Greens
Putting green was all dirt covered with weeds, so putting was an adventure.
Nice course, but the greens need some work.
The course was in good shape with the exception of the greens. They are trying to re-establish them and they will not come in until spring. Green have little grass on them and are very fast.
Really
Greens were non existant, just some dirt, some paint and weeds? The course layout is not bad but the rest is just horrific. Most of the tee boxes were dirt, and there were downed trees everywhere. I just don't get it, $30 seems reasonable but not here. My first clue should have been the 5 cars in the parking lot when I arrived.
Course is in terrible shape
The Greens were horrendous, staff indicated that the greens were reseeded in Aug. greens are patchy and rough. Fairways are brown and depending on where in the fairway you are, the ground is either very hard or soft and mushy. overall the course is terrible and i would not recommend this to anyone.
the course is very pretty
The greens cost me at least ten strokes because of the fungus and sand on all of the greens! The greens were in very bad conditions!
Worst greens in country
Made tee time before checking golfnow reviews, big mistake! The greens are nothing more than spray painted dirt with patches of weeds. The kid working course appoligized, told us they replaced the greens too late, and said they didn't take. Stay away until mid-summer. Other than that it's not a bad place to play.
Gotta get the greens back.
Not sure why the rebuild of the greens is taking longer than the 6 weeks that was estimated on their website in August, but they really are in terrible shape still. Love the course but cannot recommend it until the greens are up to snuff again.
The course is ok great features layout nice
i will be playing there some other time. The greens were not so nice but it was a good golf course
Great layout
This is a great old course that has undergone a revamp of the greens since August. The new Bermuda greens aren't fully in, so they over seeded for the winter. Cosmetically, some of them are not great looking, but are rolling pretty true and fast. I have maintained an average of 30 putts on this course prior to the revamp, and the last 2 rounds have been 30 and 31.
The owners reduced the daily fee rate, and feel it to be the best deal in town for golf. I read some of the recent reviews that have been posted, and am unsure if they have been fair, but that is just an opinion.
Awful Greens
Lanier GC is actually one of my favorite courses. The recent attempt to change the greens to Bermuda seems to have failed. I asked the pro shop staff for an explanation, but did not get an answer that jives with the actual conditions. This course will not be back to its 2011 condition until at least mid to late summer 2013. Stay away unless you get a great rate.
Always a challange even under the most ideal conditions
This is one of th courses on out regular rotation as it is normally in good to great condition and is a fair, but difficult layout. The new greens are still a bit inconsistant and sandy fast, but I xpct by March of next year will be rolling much better. This has been a favorot course of ours for som time and I can't say enough about th staff who are top notch.
greens not ready yet
Greens arent there yet. rest of course is good, but greens rough, sandy, better off waiting on this one until next year.
Decent Course, Greens need serious attention
The staff was friendly, and the range was in good shape.
The tee boxes, fairways, rough, and sand traps were all in really good condition. The greens however were not. The greens have very little grass on them, and basically consist of compacted dirt/clay. Puttting and chipping on the greens is like your golf ball playing Plinko on the Price is Right.
Very dissapointing especiialy since the course has been closed for 2 months for renovations. I was fortunate enough to have only paid $23 for the round. Don't pay more, go somewhere else until they get their greens in playing condition. This course has potential to be really really great.
Wonderful course!
The course is truly a "diamond in the rough". We drive from Cumming regularly to play the course. Dave (the course Pro) is a wonderful asset to the facility. Always friendly and accommodating. It is a really fun course which makes for a super golfing experience.
The greens are in terrible shape.
Course is in good shape except for the greens which are inHORRIBLE shape.
Nov 2012 - Stay away!!!
Lanier Golf Club (LGC) closed in August to go from bent to champions bermuda greens. They opened November 3, 2012. I played November 5th. The greens were just atrocious. Every green was made "green" (the color) by green sand and spots of poa anna and/or rye. It was a really big disappointment. In my opinion, they damaged themselves by opening when they had no right to (they didn't say anything about how horrible the greens were). And by being open, they further damage the course, because these greens should not be walked on, hit onto, etc. I do not plan to go play here again unless I hear specific feedback that their greens are actual greens.
greens are still a mess
Besides having 2 trucks driving on and off the fairways during my round, the staff being over controlling, and the greens in very poor conditions, the day was a mess. After being closed for 3 months to repair the greens, the up keep of the course was much in need. The pro shop would not let out my 2some, saying we had to wait for a four some to tee off, fine but played behind a single the whole round. Chances are I wont be back unless every other course in Atlanta is full. Not worth the time or the money to drive to.
Driving Range
I regularly use Lanier's driving range for practice, but have not played the course in several months. The range is fair, in the sense that the hitting areas are worn, sometimes making it difficult to find a spot to it where there is not just bare sand. Nonetheless, it is the closest to the Cumming area that has real grass on the range instead of mats, and that is a plus for me. Today, at approximately 3:30 pm I was attempting to hit on the range but was VERY distracted by a gentleman who was giving a lesson, it appeared, to two other men. He was very loud, and did not take into consideration that he was surrounded by approximately ten others who were trying to practice. He regularly raised his voice in excitement, shouting statements like, "That's it! That's how I want you to hit it." He was showing his students their swings on the monitor, and making comments like, "See this...this is how You need to hit, etc.". I understand he needs to generate a degree of excitement, but the volume was more in line of a class of twenty students rather than the two that were standing three feet away from him. I was not the only one who was distracted. Another player, after several loud comments by the instructor, picked up his bag and moved to the complete opposite end of the range. I realized that there is a degree of interaction required to instruct a person, but etiquette does not only apply "on the course" it applies on the range too.
This reviewer, majhar, appears to have rated the wrong course. Maybe he actually played Lagacy at Lanier which was actually allowing play on on the date(10/17/12) that he thinks he played there. While I look forward to Lanier, a fun layout, having those beautiful Champion Bermuda green; it sounds like it may be a while before they are playable. Lanier should be honest and at least add an Aeration Alert (A!) to their tee times.
