UNC Finley Golf Course
About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

Golfer Reviews
Lovely Old School Golf Course
I really enjoy this course. Wonderful woodland golf without tricked up holes. Excellent conditioning. There may not be lots of memorable holes, but the overall experience is very memorable. Can't wait to play it again.
Great .
If you play. Play the Blurs or back. Great layout. Good sand and fairway's. Play it.
4 HOUR ROUND! Course in great shape.
4 hours on the nose. Scored a $39 single deal the night before and ended up getting paired up with one other guy who plays the course fairly frequently. A solid golfer and nice guy gave me some good tips throughout. Too bad I left most of my swing at home. Still a great day.
Course: Really nice layout and GREAT shape. If I was splitting hairs I would knock the (9th?) hole. Lacking what I would consider a traditional landing area, but what a nice course. And also they had us hitting off mats today at the range when there was a ton of good grass available. That was disappointing, but I imagine there was a valid reason.
I believe the back nine is the nicer and more challenging of the 2. Several short 4's on the front, not so much on the back.
You have some red stakes areas on this course so watch out for those. Some of the rough around the bunkers and greens is that type of grass that's not high but your ball will disappear in it. Really have to accelerate through it.
Going to head back first chance I get.
Nice course especially as a deal
As a budget golfer (ie not rich) I normally find Finley expensive compared to other local offerings, especially at weekends, but I like the course a lot. This discount offer allowed me to play on a Saturday. The person I played with complained about the greens, which were indeed a bit slow and unpredictable from one green to another. Otherwise - great course - go play it if you can afford it, find a deal., or late play in the week.
Championship Course
The course was absolutely gorgeous. Everything was in perfect condition. The greens had been aerated just over a week before we played and were still smooth. We paid $44 through golf now and I would have paid more. It gave a real championship course feel to an at best average golfer. We will definitely be back.
Awesome!!!!
First time playing there, but will not be the last. The course was in tremendous shape and the greens were awesome. Not too busy, so pace of play was great. Circled the first nine in 1.5 hours. Great Sweet Tea at the grill on the turn. Marshall was personable with good course advice. Pro shop was beautiful, and a TarHeel fans dream. A little pricy, but good quality merchandise. I wish there were more discounts out there for rounds....Greens fees are a little high, but the course is better than average, so I guess it is still a good value. Would love to come back soon!!!
Top 10 college course
Great enjoyable course. Nice layout. Donald Ross features. In great condition , particularly greens.
Major complaint is pace of play. Suggest cutting high Bermuda rough down a bit to facilitate finding balls 2' off fairway.
UNC Finely GC 8/30/14
Played here a number of times before. Best conditions I've ever seen. Greens were aerated a couple of weeks ago and 99% healed. A great layout that becomes more and more challenging as you move back in tee boxes. Course not crowded today probably because of Labor Day weekend and football Saturday. 4 hr round even with waits on mosts of back 9. High recommend. Nice practice range and grill had great burgers and potato salad.
Rate was $62 pre pay with Golf Now. 50% higher then other nearby public courses, but I look at it as an extra $20 gets you a much much better track and golf experience.
My favorite course in the area!
I play at UNC Finley as often as I can. It continues to be my favorite course in the area because of the consistency of the conditions and design.
The greens are soft and roll true. The front nine is a variety of relatively easy holes and the real challenge starts on the back nine. A great Fazio course. Worth the price.
Great shape
The course is very scenic and in great shape. Alot of good holes. Played from gold tees which was 6800 yards, some long par 4s.
Always A Pleasure
UNC Finley never disappoints. The staff is very friendly, and the setting is excellent. If you are looking for a challenging but very fair course with all natural landscaping (no houses) then this course is a "must play".
Cobb to Fazio in 50 Years
The rebuilt UNC Finley Golf Club (proper name) is a fine example of Tom Fazio's expertise in revamping older courses built by the old masters. Shame the people in charge of Finley GC from 1949 to 1998 let the original George Cobb design fall into such demise.
One of the best 'saves' from the original design is the course remains walkable for us traditionalists. There are several holes where the walking path is shorter than the cart path from green to tee.
Arriving early for my tee time I was disappointed to learn the driving range was closed for maintenance, remember that if you intend to play on Tuesday morning prior to noon. My playing partner and I played all 18, how can you not play nine if you play eighteen?
Each staff member I met was helpful, pleasant and cheerful, as they should be at any facility which caters to the public for monetary gain.
The course was in near perfect condition and the weather could not have been better for late July in the North Carolina Piedmont area. Our only concern, post driving range situation, was the greens were only running about an eight on the stimp meter. Although slow, they ran true and as level (level meaning smooth) as any I have played in a very long time.
This is a walkable course as I alluded to earlier, in addition it is visually pleasing and I see no reason it could not be an Audubon Sanctuary course, other than it is located in a very high traffic area of Chapel Hill.
The rate schedule for this course, as well as many "university" associated courses (Lonnie Poole comes to mind) is a bit pricey, however if you can find a Golf Now 'Hot Deal' take it, you will be happy to have had an opportunity to play the UNC Finley Golf Club course.
Great Course
Found this course on golf now at a great price. Was able to play it on a Friday evening for $27. Great course great staff great value for the money
Great layout
Well maintained. Pleasing to the eye. Excellent practice area.
Very good golfing experience
The course is owned and maintained by the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. While that statement might suggest that the course is like some average muni, nothing could be farther from the truth. The course is beautifully maintained, carefully tended, has a lovely layout, and possesses a new and spacious clubhouse which adjoins the facility. The cost to players not associated with the University, however, is somewhat pricey by local public course standards - about $64 per round with cart, although selected tee times through GolfNow.com can reduce the rate to $40-50. Many courses in the area are converting their greens to Ultradwarf Bermuda to avoid catastrophic loss, but UNC Finley has yet to do so; while the greens are impeccably maintained, they are very soft, somewhat slow, and the turf very thin.
boston bomber
Great course its in terrific shape if you are in the area its a must play. I here all 3 collages in the area have excellent courses.
Challenging course, fun for all golfers
UNC Finley was one of the better courses I've played in the Triangle. The course was in great shape from tee boxes to greens. The greens lacked consistency, probably based on recent rainfall, but coupled with elevation and drainage, it was difficult to adjust to different green speeds.
Generally, the course was free of major water hazards though a few holes played along and over water or shrubbery. If you cleared the hazards, you have very large and well-maintained fairways to play from Be careful of the fairway bunkers, they're placed in the perfect spots to screw up a long drive.
Enjoyable all-around experience
Course in great shape and all staff encountered were extremely friendly from the pro shop to grill. Booked as single but matched up with 3 other golfers - 2 locals and another visitor who also contributed to the overall positive experience. This is a first class facility and one of the best university courses I have been fortunate to play among many. I plan on playing again when in the area. Thanks Finley for a great time and experience.
