Layout - YES Condition - NO
EASY to see how the place hosted pga tournys for 30 years from layout standpoint - lots of interesting holes, great mix of short and long, fun greens, etc.
VERY surprised at condition - at least a quarter of fairways were just a patchwork of dirt and grass, traps were horrible.
Had a great time out with dad on a nice course. Some fairways were in rough shape, but overall it was great outing.
First Timer
First Time playing Forest Oaks...Staff was friendly. Thought course was in ok shape for this time of year. No issues with pace on the Front Nine but twosome with a larger sasquatch sloth held several of us up past the turn. All in all had a good time for first visit. Cant wait to try again when the fairways come to life
Pleasure to play
Thoroughly enjoyed playing the former home of the Greensboro open. Not to often you can play a course where they played a PGA event for under $100.00. I'm looking forward to playing it again my next time I visit Greensboro
Great Course, But.
in the last few years they have over seeded the fairways. Not this year however, all fairways have grass but very short and hard pan. it is hard to hit off unless you take a big divit. As soon as spring is here it will be again a great course.
Not a good experience
I've been playing Forest Oaks for about a year now. My experience on Saturday, March 4, 2017, was poor. It took about two and a half hours to play 10 holes before I left, and I was playing by myself. There were multiple groups playing very slow and not allowing me, another man playing alone, and a twosome through. When I finished #7, there were 4 groups bunched up between #8 tee (par 3) and #9 tee. Finally finished the front nine and came to 10 tee, and it was jammed up. Decided to try and play some of the front again, and skipped to 11. Played it, and then got behind a group that took forever to play 12, a relatively simple par 3. Turned around to go home, and on the way in, saw a fivesome tee off on 16. Went to the pro shop and asked if a ranger was working, was told they don't have them. Explained what happened, and he graciously gave me a rain check for 9 holes. Really like the layout and its convenience to my home, but I can't waste this much time waiting around on every tee and fairway.
A good track
It's always fun playing a course that used to host a pro tournament, conditions were good even though it was very windy, greens were good and rolled true, fairways are still dormant which leaves some pretty tight lies but gives lots of run out on drives.
No Water on Course (Again!)
75 degrees in Feb. is no different than spring or fall. Please add water coolers at least one per each side. Only course on planet not to have water coolers at various points on course. Disappointed!
Love the course
Sometimes we don't have time to play 18 holes and Forest Oaks don't allow play for nine holes so we have to go to alternate courses.Since we live at Forest Oaks we would love to spend our money supporting local business but unless they start allowing nine holes we are forced to go else where
Winter Golf
I titled this review to put into perspective the time period and what to expect.
We played this course as a preparation round to an upcoming tourney we plan on playing here. I must say, for the day we played (40 degrees, rain that morning, cold/overcast day) we were one of maybe 4 groups out there. Played 27 holes in 5 hours. I know the TOUR used to stop here, and the layout suggests a great score-fest with a few challenges mixed in. This wasn't our first time here, and certainly wont be the last. I'm impressed. Yes, there are dead areas of Bermuda and the greens were a little soft so they were easily marred by ball marks on such a wet day, but nevertheless, and again, for February, the course is as good as any around. Despite the softness, greens easily rolling 10+. and the fairways were cut smooth. I have no complaints. Going back this week as well!
former PGA tour course-excellent value
It's great that Forest Oaks is open to the public. As a former course for the PGA Tour, it is wonderful to play the same layout. The value on Golf Now was fantastic, $17 with cart. I was joined up by a nice player, with his mom going along as an observer.
Course conditions are good. Fairways are a little spotty. Greens were fair but quick. It will take a few times to become familiar with the contours. Could use maps of each hole on the tee. No indicators on the scorecard. Challenging to navigate for someone not playing there on a regular basis.
Staff is friendly, with a well-stocked pro shop. Pace of play was good, playing in 4 hours on a beautiful 70 degree January day.
Only negatives...... we had a 12:12 tee time and didn't go out until almost 12:30 due to the backup on the first tee.
Also, after clearly having no one within 2 holes of our group on the front nine. A twosome caught up to us on the back nine. They had to start at the 10th hole, not a good idea on a crowded course.
I would definitely include Forest Oaks in my rotation of courses locally any time there is a deal online.
Definitely recommend the course.
good course for the money
played this course many times and since it was cold and damped I decided to play fro the red tees to speed it up a bit. I actually played the round of my life, shooting an 82 with no double or triple bogies. thinking about playing from the red tees from now on.
Remodeled former Tour Course
For 19 years this site hosted the Wyndham Championship (formerly the GGO) until returning to Sedgefield. An extensive remodel and update of the course couldn't save the country club, but area golfers have kept the course open. Large greens, five sets of tees, and well maintained bunkers make for enjoyable experience.
First Time Player
Good challenging course layout. If you like playing challenging and undulating greens, this is the course for you. Course in good shape. Staff was extremely friendly to a first time player. Only thing keeping me from giving a much higher rating was the slow play. In Forest Oak's defense, there was a tournament ahead of my tee time. Will play again.
great value / great round
Was looking for course to play in Greensboro area on short notice and GN had hot deal for 10.00 Booked it as soon as I saw it, and little did I know what a great deal this was. Forest Oaks is former host of GGO until it moved to Wyndham and course is not as it used to be, but I loved the layout. Greens and fairways in great shape, bunkers needed a little work. Played as a trwosome and had no wait until caught a foursome around 15 but still finished in 4 hours. Overall - a great day - thanks GN!
PGA Tour Course at a Public price
This is one of my favorite course to play. Great layout you can pick the tee box best fit for your game.
