worst golf course
It's the worst golf course I've been playing.
fairway was like a jungle
green was damaged
Carolina Golf
I loved the lay out, I only had a hard time finding the distance markers. I usually have my GPS watch or golf buddy. However, both were left home.
Good value
This is a nice course with a good layout and the price is right. Of course it's not in PGA Tournament hosting shape anymore, but for $45 it's a good track with no funky stuff. Hit a driver off every par 4 and par 5, good greens in great shape. The occasional fairway issues don't bum you out enough to ruin the day.
Has potential.
I picked up a tee time for $11 on golf now. So I gave the course a shot after all the bad I have heard. No rangers or starter to organize and keep pace of play I waited up to 15 minutes at some tee boxes. If the course was taken care of would probably be worth $50+. I will give this course another shot. Rough is thick and grass clippings weren't removed so bring plenty of balls if you can connect with fairways. I lost 3 balls that were only a couple feet from the fairway.
very thick deep ruff
I see why the PGA no longer plays here the course looks like its stuck in the 80s. The cart paths are rooted did see that they are trying to fix this course back up, fairways where good except for a few that died. Greens were just aerated and mostly sand not much grass. If you have never played here drive up and check a few things out hit it in the water on one hole didn't have any maps. In a year or two if they keep trying to better this course I would play again.
Awful condition/ slow play
there were no greens just sand. 5 fairways were torn up and unplayable.
Below average
I tempered my expectations knowing that I was getting a deal on the price due to the greens recently being aerated. With that being said, the overall condition of the course was poor. My group frequently lost balls just (and I mean just) off of the fairway due to the length of the rough. The rough had just been recently mowed and huge clumps of grass spread the entire length of the hole which made it even more difficult to find reasonable shots. Fairways had just been plugged on at least 4 holes making them cart path only as well. Maybe we caught the perfect storm of poor playing conditions but I will be hard pressed to return to that course.
Nice layout
Overall the course had a few issues with a couple lost fairways due to winter frost. But besides that it was an exceptional course for the money. Good layout and a little challenging thru out the 18 holes
It's a handful from the green tees.
Overall the course was challenging. I enjoyed the course very much, and I would definitely return.
Having played it now, I would say this courses difficulty come from strategy off of the tee. Position is critical and avoid the rough, it's a jungle in there.
Pace of play was a bit too long, the ranger didn't police the the slow groups enough.
poor green and fairways
both green and fairways are poor.
especially, the green has been covered with sands. if you are planning to play here in several weeks, you had better look for other courses!
A lot of potential
Greens were being punched but course is not what it use to be. Negatives-no sand in bunkers, grass clippings on fairways & rough. Positives- layout
Bent grass greens in rough shape
The previous reviews are spot on right now with people not repairing ball marks on the greens. Not sure who is guilty members or non members I do know I repaired around 5 myself every green we played yesterday with exception of the third green which had just been aerated. Have played this course four time since beginning of the year and this is by far the worst shape it has been in. I expect the bent grass greens to be in better shape in the coming months when the summer heat goes away.
Potential
My friend and I saw a tee time for $25 a person to ride 18, so we took it up. Throughout the round one can see the potential for the course to be of championship material. Unfortunately the winter kill got the best of Forest Oaks. For the money, this course was wonderful. And if the winter kill hadn't gotten to it I see this course being easily $50-65 to play.
Will definitely return.
PS. Be wary of the rough. Many a ball to be lost merely two feet off the fairway
Great layout. Poor conditions
Fantastic layout. Course is unfortunately in very poor condition.
Needs work!!!
Just not a good time to play this course. Great lay out like to go back and play when it's back in good condition
Extremely Poor Condition
I have played this course for 33 years. Worst condition by far I have ever seen it. Not just winter kill, I could get by that. Green conditions are terrible, ball marks out of control. Also, not upkeep of surrounding areas past the rough lines. It what I assume is supposed to be fescue areas are just weeds on steroids infested areas in numerous places on the course, Just about every hole in fact. Very sad, used to be my favorite course, I was a long time member. Won't be back until I am assured of much better conditions
Sad
Not sure where to start. Many fairways had winter kill. 4 holes were cart path only due to the kill. One temp green. Greens on front 9 were fair to poor. Back 9 greens better but still not good. This was once the home of the GGO. Sad to see in this condition. Rough is overgrown with tall weeds. Bathrooms disgusting. Sad state of affairs for a private club, now allowing outside play. Obviously in deep financial trouble.
Great course needs work on fairways and bunkers
Having lived at Forest Oaks for 10 years when the Wyndham Championship was played there and the course being in fantastic shape at that time. I was disappointed in the overall condition of the course. People not fixing ball marks seems to be a big problem. This is a great layout and I would hope that the course will one day be back to what it used to be.
Disappointed!
I remember this course from the days of the Old Greater Greensboro Open and in later years the Wyndam. It was a great world class course, and I was incredibly excited to get to play it. Once I got there I was incredibly disappointed in the condition of both the facilities and the course. I've seen much better conditions at rural "pay for play" courses. Don't waste your money until things improve.
Kinda Disappointing
It's hard to believe the pro tour used to play here. This course is OK but not awesome by any stretch. The course is still in bad shape in many places but is better than other Greensboro courses at the moment due to the winter kill. What's funny is an employee asked me to keep the wheels of my cart off the grass on my tee box while his "worker cart" was parked RIGHT BESIDE a green (on the grass). Other areas around the course are just dirt and mud. If there is a next time, I'll take pics to post. And, the sprinklers were on while we were playing on about 4 holes. I honestly don't think they should charge more than $30 to play here.
