Not what I expected
I booked this tee time because I never played this course before and it was cheap. When I got there, I saw why it was cheap. Many of the fairways were more bare than grass covered. Five or six holes were cart path only because there was almost no grass. The lady on the drink cart was very nice and explained to me that her husband was the new supt. and he had only been there a year. She said the course he inherited was a disaster and all the hot, dry weather this year had only made things worse. The greens were full of old ball marks, but still rolled fairly well. There membership is increasing and I think with time, and money, the course can come back to it's former glory, but it's going to be a while.
The Greens
I played here earlier in the year and the course was in great shape. The course has taken a beating since then. The greens have been hit hard and there were a ton of ball marks, it was tough to put a straight line. The fairways were in pretty bad shape too. I'm sure they will get the course back in great shape as soon as the blistering heat takes a turn for a little cooler temperatures. I look forward to coming back a little later in the year.
The Big Miss
A month ago, had heard the course was in great shape from a colleague. Either conditions have deteriorated markedly or he played blind that day. Five fairways were cart path only because of repair work; one temporary green as well. The greens were pockmarked with ball strikes over 50% of their surfaces. The rough was untended, covered with clippings, and a ball was impossible to find once it left the fairway. Was not worth the price of admission. On the positive side, the burger & fries included in the green fees were excellent.
Disapointing if not sad.....
This was my 7th Elis Maples course and I was excited for the opportunity to add to that list. I've almost enjoyed his layouts as they have a straightforward classic feel to them. Forest Oaks had that same feel to it but I ended up only playing nine holes ....
The pace of play was pretty poor. It was over two and a half hours to make the turn..... and there was no sign of a course ranger....
There was also not much grass in many of the fairways....
There was also not much water in may of the water jugs on the course.....then when we go to the club house there was not much of anything as it was all locked up and iot about 6:30 PM
I know the Carolina's took a hit this winter and "winter kill" has challenged many of the courses but the tee boxes and fairways were generally a mess.
Greens were bent grass and badly scared with ball marks....they were also VERY soft as a result of the standard midsummer maintenance (watering) of bent greens in the south.....
So after nine......we were done.....I was tired of standing around and having to hunt for some grass to hit off of......
All in all disappointing.....and worse...... it was sad.....this is a classic Maples layout...... and it looked like.........much less than average.
Some one should be embarrassed.
Unless I read some believable reviews regarding the course upkeep.....I will not be back.
Okay Shape
I assume they had winter-kill so all of the fringes were either removed and completely dirt or had been aerated. They were actually aerating much of the course during the round which was a bit cumbersome. The greens were in good condition although a bit slow but overall quite nice. The golf shop attendant refused to believe that I had prepaid for the round with GolfNow when I arrived and I had to show him my receipt. I was quite taken back that he didn't even know how the relationship worked. I will say at least they are working to repair the courses so hopefully it will be in good shape next year.
I've never seen a course decline so fast.
This course used to be the pride of the county. It hosted the Wyndham championship for a number of years and was always a hidden gem. Ever since it has turned public, the course (especially the greens) are declining quickly. I rarely had a putt that wasn't interfered with by excessive pitch marks and footprints that are destructive to the greens. Pace of play was a NIGHTMARE!! Overbooking on the weekends is a constant problem. This isn't the first time I had to leave early from a late afternoon tee time. My advise is to stay away from here if you want to spend $60 for a morning round. Your money can be spent on much better courses.
Give yourself plenty of time
Pace of play is the main problem here. The course itself is very nice but some of the fairway are pretty beat up (especially 9). Booked this through GolfNow for a 5:00 and apparently they overbook through GN and their own site so it was bottle necked the entire front 9.
Course is solid and challenging but isn't what I expected from such a well known place in the area.
I'll be back soon
I really enjoyed this challenging but fair course. The greens are in great shape and the fairways are coming back well. The staff both in and out of the shop are friendly and very friendly I'm think about becoming a member
Fairways are rough right now
This course appears to have dealt with significant winterkill. They are working on the fairways. Greens are smooth
Still a gem
This course has always been a pleasure to play and this time was no different. There were a couple of fairways with some damage, but most courses in this area have had the same problem. No greens were burnt up or damaged, other than the obligatory unrepaired divots. Some members at this course have always lived by a different set of rules. All in all, it's still a good challenge and worth every penny of the GolfNow hot deal. Thanks FO!
Not so hot, but okay for the price
It was fun, but I see why the pros don't play there anymore. Bare spots in the fairways and an outdated clubhouse.
Favorite course
I have played here about 6 times now that they opened to the public. Never have I had anything but good vibes after a round.
Horrible..Horrible.. Condition
Hubby & I played Forest Oaks CC for the 1st time today, and we were soooo disappointed!. The course was in such bad shape, we left after 9 holes! We have played golf for more than 25yrs f/ Hawaii to Puerto Rico, and we have never left a golf course b/c of it's condition until today. In other words, distance means nothing to us to play a descent golf course. First of all, I'm a very advanced golfer (4.3 USGA handicap f/ reg men's tees#, and my hsb is very advanced as well. Before driving 1.5hrs to play there, I called and asked about course conditions. I was told that they didn't have any 'winter kill' except maybe a little bit on psbly 2 holes, but it was off to the side, and the course was in great condition. That was not true! We were also told the fairways had been aerified the previous week, which was no big deal. There was no grass on the tee boxes. And, only 2 fairways #both par 3s# had much grass at all. There was some grass closer to the greens and the greens were just okay; they still have bent grass. But, for the most part... the landing areas did not have grass... I mean no grass. There was plenty of grass in the rough, but not the fairways. I mean no grass! After 9 holes, I go into the clubhouse and tell them that we'd like a refund and pay only for 9 holes: I told them why we did not won't to continue, "if the front nine is any indication of the back nine, we would not continue. We were told that they only give rain-checks. I told them we would not be back! Now, had the guy in the pro shop been honest about the condition, we would respect that more, and we would have gone when it improved. Clearly, the guy in the pro shop #I don't won't to mention his name# had not been on the course, but was taking somebody's word for it, so we can't blame him. Green Fees: on-line $29.00... great rate. So, I called and asked if that was the best rate. I was told starting at 3:00pm, we could play for $26.32 #incl. tax#; so, we get there after 2:00pm. In person, we were told $26.32 pp and we're told we could go ahead and go off and not wait until 3:00pm. But, the person in the pro shop couldn't get the computer to accept the $26.32 rate, so we were charged $32.00 plus tax pp. But, he did give me a $4.00 discount on the purchase of a golf bag tag. So, the rate was a real snafu to start with. Plus, they charge a $2.00 pp environmental charge for basically dumping trash. I typically buy a golf bag tag at all the courses we/I play as a memento. Had I played before I bought the tag, I would never have bought it. Sadly, when I look at that tag, it reminds me never to go back to that course.
A bit underwhelming
I have always wanted to play this course since it is known for hosting the PGA Tour's Greater Greensboro Open for 30 years; now known as the Wyndham. I will start out by saying that I did not have the best experience, however I think I would need to play it again at a normal time on the weekend to be able to fully evaluate it.
As far as the course layout, it really is a beautiful setup. I can see why professionals played here for all those years. Considering the harsh winter we had the course was in decent condition. There were some rough spots in a few fairways, but that was to be expected. Now on to the negative stuff...
Being what I would call a more "high-end" golf course, and the fact that it is a country club, I expected there to be a course ranger out there making sure people were keeping up the pace. Not once did we see a ranger out there. Now, we played late...teed off at 4:30...but even still there should have been someone out there. We had some really slow groups in front of us, and there was no way to play through because the group in front of the next group were playing just as slow.
When we were about to make the turn we were hungry and wanted to grab a hot dog or even just a pack of crackers before we hit the back 9, but discovered the clubhouse had already been locked up. Really? Why would you close up shop when you have so many people still out on the course? So that frustrated us. Then we pulled up to the 10th tee and saw the group in front of us were at a stand-still in the fairway, while the group in front of them had just gotten up on the green. We ended up just playing the front 9 again, because we probably only would have gotten through about 13 or 14 holes if we would have tried to play the back 9 with all those people.
Once again, I would like to play the course again maybe in the morning or early afternoon so i could actually play all 18 holes. If I could make a constructive suggestion it would be to spread out the tee times a little bit so the pace of play isn't so terrible. If that is not an option, get some rangers out there so they can respectfully help people keep the pace up.
Bad shape and over priced
Course is in terrible shape and was charged $52. Fairways dirt, coolers on cart filthy, no starter or ranger, wait on every hole. Wouldn't pay $30 to play here.
great course. challenging. lots of open fairways!
except for the slow foursome in front of us it is was a great place to play and i cant wait to get back.
i think its in better shape than 95 percent if courses in the area at this time.
Great golf course
Was very glad that I played this course, it was in great condition and the greens are big and very true. The pace was very slow due to a threesome that was in front of us that kept hitting there balls out of bounds and in the rough and they kept looking for there balls. But I really like the course and I will be going back.
Staff screws up
Arrived 22mins prior to tee off and staff informs us to start on back nine.. Which caused problems with other golfers. Manager came out and told us to start on front nine we informed him what his staff member told us and all he said was "he shouldn't of done that" it was very embarrassing and if that wasn't bad enough they let two walkers go infront of us that we followed all day would not let us play thru.. very disappointing in Forest Oaks.
Best Course in Greensboro
Forest Oaks is in the best condition of any course I have played in Greensboro. It is a challenging course, even from the white tees which play about 6400 yds. One of the few courses around with grass on the fairways due to most courses not over seeding. Best greens around. Will definitely bring some friends back here to play. Both times I've played the course were early on Sunday morning so food in the facility and via food cart were not options.
Great value
Course was in excellent condition, rained on us for 13 holes but course held up very well. Look forward to playing it again.
