Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation
About
The 18-hole Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina is a public golf course that opened in 1994. Designed by Tim Cate, Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation measures 7089 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.7 USGA rating. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent and the fairways are bermuda.
Panther's Run was born to be a different kind of challenge than Lion's Paw. Golf course designer Tim Cate has unleashed this cat to prowl along the edge of a natural preserve and continually tests your ability to stay out of, or hit over, the surrounding marsh land. Wide fairways that twist and turn with a variety of elevations, plus scenic water features blend perfectly.
The front nine picks its way through hardwood forest while the back nine is more open. The course is laid out along the edge of a natural preserve and tests golfers' ability to negotiate the surrounding marsh land and water. The fairways twist and turn and show a variety of elevations, as much as 60 feet in fact.

Panther Run Conditions
Terrible. Enough said, but never enough…
Tee boxes were rough. Fairways showed much neglect. Bunkers did not show maintenance for several days. Several greens were in poor shape. At best this course rivals poorly maintained municipal courses. Very sad 😢
Fun Day, But….
Fairways were fine with lots of good lies. Fought not too onerous. Bunkers could use more sand. Tried to blast out once and should have checked with my feet first. Almost sprained my wrist on the hard pack below a dusting of sand. Greens were super slow - I prefer faster - and were beginning to have poa annua issues. Staff was great. I would play it again, but with different expectations.
Nice layout but not shapely
Like the course but it’s not in great shape like other reviews have said. Definitely could use some maintenance improvements. But not bad to play if the discount is high enough
Stay away!
The course was smothered in crabgrass. We had to move balls on the green to avoid the 10 inch patches of crabgrass. The fairways were decent. None of the traps were playable. They looked like they hadn't been worked on in some time. It did rain the day before so we expected some water in the traps. There were large sections of cart paths that were missing or damaged. It looked like they were trying to remove grass, tree roots, dirt, etc. from sections of the cart paths so maybe they will be better in time. The locals went off in threesomes and were annoyed that there was a foursome on the course. Rude folks. The staff was great.
Thank you for the nice Four Star review of Panther's Run. We are very excited about the direction we are moving and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Nice course but poor condition
This is a nice course, that I have played many times and hardly anyone was there, so the pace of play was good but the course conditions were not. The grass on the tee boxes was either too long or nonexistent, the fairways were too long with a lot of weeds and the greens were too long with a lot of crab grass.

Fun Course
Really enjoyed the course and the layout. Greens could have been better. Little bumpy but no bare spots. Ranger was great and got the group in front of us to speed up play. Would play here again.
Thank you very much for the nice Four Star review of Panther's Run. We appreciate your patronage and your feedback. We are working hard daily on all four Big Cats courses and we hope you will visit us again soon and see our continued progress. Thanks again!
Play golf
Avid golfer here played over 30 different courses in Myrtle Beach area. Panthers Run is better than most of its recent reviews. If you want perfect summertime golf conditions and are expecting Masters conditions well go to the Masters, for the value this is a fine place to play, played 18 in just under 3 hours. First time on this course for me. Expect water in bunkers if there was a recent thunder storm, expect spots on a few and i mean just a few greens when its 90° plus daily. But for $37 golf now hot deal i will give this place my money every year. Greens rolled true. Very pleased with the value and the course. Layout nice houses on perimeter are not in play, plenty of room to hit driver most holes. Dont over think it just play golf.
Thank you very much for your feedback and we certainly appreciate the nice Four Star review of Panther's Run. We agree, it is a fun course and a good value for anyone wanting an enjoyable round of golf. We hope you will visit us again soon and be sure to check out the other three Big Cats courses as well.
Great Blend of Golf and Nature
The course winds through a spectacular view of preserved marshlands, yet presents a challenging round of golf!
Thank you for the very nice Five Star review of Panther's Run. We really appreciate your patronage and feedback. Be sure to check out the other 3 Big Cats course as well!
Cart girl good. That is all. Course horrible shape
I won’t go to any of the four courses on this plantation
Thank you for your recent patronage. We apologize we fell short of your expectations on this visit. The extreme spring drought we experienced has left the course less green that we would typically expect this time of year, as it delayed the annual transition from winter rye grass to warm weather bermuda grass on our fairway and tee boxes. Fortunately the rains in the last few days have helped tremendously and things are looking much better already. We expect all four Big Cats courses to be in very good condition for the remainder of 2022 and beyond.
Thank you very much for the wonderful Five Star review of Panther's Run. We truly appreciate it. Now that the extreme drought conditions of the past several weeks have improved, course conditions will also continue to get even better as we move forward through the remainder of 2022 and beyond! We hope you will come visit us again soon!
Disappointed
There are better options available for the premium price that they charge. Many fairways and greens were bare and tree roots came into play in some of the fairways.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we were unable to meet your expectations on this visit. The recent severe drought has caused many courses in our area significant problems this spring and the Big Cats courses were no exception. I'm not sure what price you paid, but Panther's Run is actually priced quite moderately for our region, though you did play at the very tail end of our highest rate period of the year. Rates will be going down for the summer very soon and, fortunately, we did receive some much needed rain, which has already shown great dividends. We apologize again and we will do everything within our ability to improve our operation and continue to offer our guests a fun and memorable golf experience.
Conditions NOT Good
Our group traveled from out of state to play the Big Cats courses in mid-May, and while we all agreed the layout was good, the course maintenance was rough, some of the worst we've played on (minus Tiger's Eye, which had "normal" golf conditions). Tee boxes and fairways were baked out with minimal grass, with fairway shots being off hardpan lies. The greens had bare dirt spots and crabgrass infestations, so putting was very difficult. It's a shame, the layout and potential for these courses is there but the course conditions made it very frustrating to travel so far to play these courses.
Thank you very much for choosing the Big Cats courses for your recent golf outing. We apologize we fell short of your expectations on this visit. The recent serious drought has caused significant issues for many of the courses in our area, particularly those which do not have access to any supplemental water sources. We did finally receive one good day of rain last week and that helped tremendously, as everything began to green up almost immediately. Now we just need a more typical rain pattern and The Big Cats courses will be nice and green for the summer months. Again, we apologize you did not get to play our courses at their best. If you will contact me at blong@oceanridge.com, we will work with your group to help resolve your concerns. Thank you.
Thank you for your recommendation! We truly appreciate it.
Thank you for reviewing your visit to Panther's Run and for recommending us to other golfers! We truly appreciate it.
Thank you for the nice Four Star review of Panther's Run. We truly appreciate your patronage and look forward to seeing you again soon! Be sure to check out the other three Big Cats Courses as well!
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize that you did not catch us at our best. We had over 2.5" of rain in the 24 hour period prior to your round and that left the bunkers and other areas of the course in less than ideal condition on that date. The cart path work you saw was in preparation for extensive cart path renovations to Lion's paw and Panther's Run, which are ongoing this week and should be completed by next week. We hope you will come visit us again and see our continued improvement.
