Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation

About
The 18-hole Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina is a public golf course that opened in 1994. Designed by Tim Cate, Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation measures 7089 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.7 USGA rating. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent and the fairways are bermuda.
Panther's Run was born to be a different kind of challenge than Lion's Paw. Golf course designer Tim Cate has unleashed this cat to prowl along the edge of a natural preserve and continually tests your ability to stay out of, or hit over, the surrounding marsh land. Wide fairways that twist and turn with a variety of elevations, plus scenic water features blend perfectly.
The front nine picks its way through hardwood forest while the back nine is more open. The course is laid out along the edge of a natural preserve and tests golfers' ability to negotiate the surrounding marsh land and water. The fairways twist and turn and show a variety of elevations, as much as 60 feet in fact.

Getting dry there
As might be expected in late-June in Brunswick Co, the course is starting to dry out and turf is suffering a bit. But it’s a fun track and amazingly we had it to ourselves on a Weds 11:12 start, so had a great time. Use Golfnow for better nonlocal rates than walk ups
Nice Course
Played for the first time. One of four courses at Ocean Ridge. Well manicured and decent length fairways. Cart paths are all paved and friendly staff. Your start time is the actual start time so that is a good thing for a change. Nice clubhouse and bar area. Don’t be a slacker if you come here; this is an upper level course so be respectful and tip accordingly. Everyone here goes out of the way to help, they all are deserving. Super hot yesterday, but the breeze made it nicer.

Good value
Easy course if water doesn’t bother you. Greens were rolling good except a few brown patches. Good value. I compared it to another local course that was 25% better for 140% more.

Panther is still running
Because of time of year, we as locals are having trouble finding tee times in the Myrtle Beach area. We understand that this is the busy season, and I remember being a tourist myself that we once played the big cat courses years ago. When I called and heard they had a 9:27 tee time for a foursome we jumped on it, as it turned out I wish they had said we are all booked up. So disappointing in course conditions. Panthers run is in terrible condition. Our first concern should have been when the pro shop said that the practice green is in rough shape, however the greens on the course should be in better conditions.... wrong. From greens to sand traps to fairways this course was in terrible shape, the only thing positive was that it only took 4 hours to play. Hopefully the other 3 courses up there are in better condition, however I doubt it. The greenskeeper must limited to funds, because money, time and resources are not being put back into these courses.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We truly appreciate your patronage and your feedback. We apologize for the unsatisfactory experience you described. The course is transitioning from the winter Poa Trivialis to the warm season TifEagle bermuda and there is a short period during this transition in which the greens do appear off color and are not at their best. This transition is brought on by the weather conditions and varies from year to year. Fortunately it progresses quickly and the greens will be back in very good condition soon and should remain that way for the remainder of the spring, summer and fall, at which time we will transition back to the winter cover. We apologize again that you did not catch us at our best on the day you played, but we are working hard on all four Big Cats courses and will continue to strive to offer our guests a fun and memorable golf experience.

Much improved over 2023
Played last year. Layout and staff are fantastic as always. Last year the greens were a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. They are much improved, I'd give them a 6 or 7 now. Will improve more with the weather. Way to go staff!!

Coarse was under construction
I like the course layout I thought the clubhouse was very nice, but there was a lot of construction. The cart paths were very back jarring when I was done playing I was in some pain because of the construction that we had to drive over.
Thank you for the very nice four star review of Panther's Run. We truly appreciate your patronage and your feedback. With practically no rainfall in the past 50 days, the courses are definitely much drier than they normally would be this time of year. Fortunately, there is a great chance of rain over the next several days and that will make a huge difference quickly. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress. Thanks again!
