Pohick Bay Golf Course

About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Bad Greens
Half the greens were completely sanded. I sympathize but no one made us aware before round and there was no apology or discount. Full rate for current course condition is very unfair. I will stay away until conditions are fixed.
The greens
5 of the greens were covered in sand. Not just the normal top coating but they were nearly bunkers. The other 13 greens were in bad shape with 30% or more covered in brown spots.
Pohick Bay Golf Course was TERRIBLE!
Pohick Bay Golf Course was TERRIBLE! With no warning, charged us full price for “hard as a floor” greens (one was all sand & another was full of wasp holes; all the rest were burnt) and the bugs!! You could not focus or ignore the biting flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. They should be at half price until the at tleast get the course up to Par (pun intended). Not going back.
Beautiful but Challenging
The setting is beautiful but the course is challenging because on the front 9 there are very few pins that can be seen from the hole and it’s very hilly. On the day we played the course conditions were really poor. The greens were in terrible shape —more dirt than grass and the fairways were barely “fair”
Great pace of play and supportive staff
Liked the pace of play that day I played, from my group, and the groups ahead and behind. It was same hot humid weekend weather but water stations filled out and club staff were supportive.
Pace of Play
The score card shows pace of play and suggests playing in 4:22 minutes. It took a little over 5 hours. If you're going to put pace of play on the card you MUST marshal it. Also, they have lost their greens to heat, which I understand is a tricky business in the DMV, however, installing fans would be a big step towards keeping them.
Challenging course
One of the nicest courses in the area at a very fair price. Well maintained and the fairways, bunkers and greens are in a very good condition.
Not kept up with
Second time I’ve played the course and it is awful. Thought I’d try it again to see if the conditions got any better and they got worse. I know some of it is because the people who play out there don’t respect either but not fixing divots and backfilling with sand or repairing marks in the green but the whole course is trashed. It really is a shame too because the lay out and everything is fun and kinda challenging where golfers of all levels good work on skills.
Currently burned out of the greens
It's a great trek but currently with the weather impacts, the greens are totally shot. Burned out, lots of dead spots, and just hurting.
Beautiful views but …
The course is set surrounding Lake Manasas. The views are spectacular.
It had rained the previous evening and the bunkers were full of water and in many cases that was a foot deep. No one had bothered to drain the water. Our 4some lost at least 10 balls in that water which was too muddy to see the balls.
Additionally, the course management set cart path only rules for the day. This was correct for the first 9 holes but they should have allowed carts on the course after the course had dried up. The weather was well over 90 degrees and it was painful playing the afternoon back nine in the heat.
For the fees that the course charges, I would have expected the bunkers to be drained and the carts to be allowed on course during the mid day heat.
PB Round July 10
Understand we had some rain in recent days but the condition of some greens was poor and unrelated to the rain.
Pohick Golf Course Review
I like the fairway because most of them are not are not narrow & the rough are not too high. The grass is well maintained. The distance guideline on the cart track is good. The only lacking are the signs where you don’t see the boundary where you can take the cart. Overall, the course is very nice & recommendable.
Hot Day at Pohick Bay
Playing weather was hot, had a difficult time finishing the 18 holes. The course did have all water stations covered for the golfers. The fairways and greens were in good condition but the tees need TLC. The staff were friendly and assisted each group teeing up on first starting hole. Not a bad day at the course.
