The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.

A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.

Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.

The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Dolphin Head Golf Course

I always enjoy playing different courses I haven't played, and did this course too. It was a good layout, greens were good speed, fairways needed some fertilizer, and the only problem I had was the price is tooo high for the overall conditions!

After 30+ year visiting Hilton Head, first time playing this track. I wasn't disappointed. Of the courses played over the past 3 weeks, this was in the best condition of them all. I look forward to going back next year!

Best value on the island

This course is now a favorite of mine when visiting HHI. If you get a hot deal, it's really a great value. The layout is good, the conditions have been consistently good. The green speed is great for early april. The pace of play for a lunchtime tee time was great. The weather was very windy the day I played. You need to be on your best to score well as there are plenty of exposed holes.

Friendly staff, pretty track, sloooooooooow play

Pretty course tucked away a bit off the beaten path. Lots of typical HH holes with some fairly tight fairways, water on many holes and keep your eyes open for the occasional gator. Slow, slow play. Waited on every shot and finally at the 4:45 minute mark we skipped the 18th and headed to the clubhouse and on to Skull Creek for happy hour/dinner. I don't expect to play on HH in 4 hours but 5 plus is just too much. Maybe it was a GolfNow tee time squeezed in that slowed things down but I'd be prepared for a lot of time admiring the scenery and bungalows lining the course.

Awesome experience. Best course we played on our stay this March.

Great conditions. Lots of grass in the fairways. Always had a nice lie. Greens are very quick and hard to not 3 putt a few times. Need good control around the greens. Love the layout. Very playable.

Once you find it...it's very nice

Situated back in a gated community, be sure to use the address for your GPS search and NOT the name of the course.

Good putting green, sand practice green and 225 yard driving range. Lots of sand and lots of water (and alligators!). Greens were pretty good and pretty fast on this March day. Right and left dog legs. Good finishing holes.

I thought I'd have to think about putting my driver away after the 2nd hole due to narrow fairways, but the fairways were pretty forgiving after that.

Although there is still damage showing on the houses around the course, the course itself is recovered nicely.

I'd go back in a second.

Decent value for so-so golfers

Some tough greens with tricky muffin-tops. Greens were fast with a couple crazy pin placements. Otherwise enjoyable, low-pressure day.

Nice Course for Husbands & Wives to Play Together

We played in Mid-March, so the grass is still growing out but we noted more grass here than other courses. Greens were fast, but ran fairly true. Don't, repeat, don't leave the ball above the hole unless you want to 3 putt. Greens were hard and didn't hold the ball well on approaches. Nice facilities and cordial staff.

Nice course for early Spring

Course is still recovering from storm last fall along with a late winter freeze but overall course was in good condition. Tee boxes and fairways were fair to good since it's March. Greens were excellent. Overall a good experience and value with a GN deal so no complaints here. I would play again.

a fair and enjoyable course

I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Dolphin Head. I have been coming to HHI for 20 years but had never played there. The layout is fair, not many forced carries. The water is there only on mishit shots.. I played alone, with a group of four in front that moved right along, until the back nine, when a group in front of them slowed us down. Still, under 4 hours on a beautiful spring day. Greens rolled nicely with some real slope to them.Well worth a visit. nice wildlife, too.

Great greens

This is my 2nd time playing Dolphin Head over the past 2 winters. The thing that's stands out the most to me about this course is how true the greens are if you start it on the right line it will stay there! I have played virtually all the public courses and many of the private courses on the island and in Bluffton and I have not seen greens anywhere that role truer then these do. This course although not very long is a very good test from the Tips. I think the Par 3's and the Par 5's are stand outs on this course with a couple of the 3's being over 200 yards from the back tees and a couple of the Par 5's having forced carry's for your 2nd shot and all of them being reachable for a longer hitter. I would strongly suggest you do your best to stay below the hole all day. The downhill putts are very slippery!! The most severe being the first 2 holes so don't get discouraged it gets a little easier after the first 2 greens if you do happen to get above the hole. This is a wonderful course and a great test I recommend it to all.

Very nice layout.

This is by far the nicest course that I have played in Hilton Head for the money. Very nice, fun to play course. The greens were very fast and smooth. Bunkers had nice, white, fluffy sand in them. Course layout was challenging and fun to play. I highly recommend this course and look forward to playing it again in the future.

Excellent Course

Had a frost delay, and as the groups started the second hole, the ranger was already prodding slow groups. Kudos to the ranger!!! Played an enjoyable round in under 4 hours with 1 person in our group walking.

Course was in excellent condition for this time of year. Greens were fast, and in great shape. Played the ball down and didn't have a bad lie all day. Several tee box options, so will accommodate everyone. Holes 9 and 18 have terrific risk/reward options for those players who choose the correct tee box.

Friendly and helpful staff. One of the better values on the island. Moderate price, even at the full rate. Even better at Golfnow rates. Practice area was good, although they did have mats.

Will definitely play this one again.

Best so far on H H I

Everything went as planed for a nice round of golf. Started with bag drop, club house, staff, putting green, chipping green and driving range. Teed off on time with a nice pace all day long. Signs of Matthew still present along edges of course. This is the best so far of courses I played here on H H I. Booked thru Golf Now under the Hot Deal for only $44.....would not play here if I had to pay what they ask.for other wise. Did i mention the speed of the greens..........FAST but true.

Best course in 3 weeks!

Booked on the recommendation of a previous playing partner - thanks Les! Great reception, good marshalling and a well maintained, interesting course with fair challenges. The price we paid was ridiculously low in comparison to the value received. This course was not available last time we were here but is now a firm favourite

The fact that I got A very good hot deal

Is why I played the course. I wouldn't play there if had to pay regular price green fees. Thanks for good deal. Greens were very quick. Overall conditions very good.
