Dolphin Head Golf Course
About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Great course
Course conditions at Dolphin Head were great except along the sides and far edges due to tree cleanup after hurricane. Staff was polite and the starter got me paired up and out a bit early. Got paired with another player and we were evenly matched shot for shot and both had an excellent round of golf. That said, for my 11 am tee time the course was somewhat busy but certainly not crowded, nor was the pace of play slow at any point either in front of us or from behind - so I'm confused about bad reviews from others on the same day?? I'll be back and if Brown Golf can maintain the quality of this formerly private course it's definitely worth playing here.
great experience
very pleasant and enjoyable course with variety f holes and green were fantastic.
staff super.
2 outing on the same day
I was sold a tee time for 3 PM, expecting the crowd to be gone by that hour. However, management had run TWO outings that day, and when I arrived no cart was available. Late starting day trippers like myself crowded the course because of the two previous outings, and play was extremely slow as a result. Management should not sell 18 hole tee times for mid-to late-afternoon rounds when they know that 18 holes cannot be completed before the sun goes down.
Great Course
Besides the slow play the course was one of the more enjoyable on HHI. Course was in great shape. Greens were fast but fair.
Don't play after an outing
A one thirty tee time was offered an when I arrived I was told at the pro shop that there was a shot gun start outing on the course and that we would start about 10 minutes late. I asked if we would finish 18 and was assured that it should be no problem. We actually started about 30 minutes late and we're held up on every hole. We were able to play 10 holes before darkness set in. No course marshalls to speed up play. Nice course from what little we saw of it.
Fun and fairly touch course
Was a nice morning at the course, pace of play was great! Course was fairly tight, but fair. We all enjoyed our round and the greens are quick and very true! Will make this an annual stop for sure.
Great Course - Great Value
Even after 1 1/2" of rain the previous night, the course was in great shape. Long but fair, greens rolled fast and true. A great challenge for any golfer!
Prime course
Will play it again. Good practice area. Greens were perfect. Only one hole placement was questionable.
Great course, you will want to go back.
great course. green were in great condition but a little slow. greens are very challenging due the slopes. Must hit great shots below the holes.
Simply the best
What a great course. Our group had never played Dolphin Head until this year. We found the conditions of the course to be immaculate. Tees, fairways, traps and greens were outstanding.
We played from the blue tees one day and the white tees another. Both tee boxes presented a stern test of golf. Can't wait to play again.
Well Organized
Made a 12:00 reservation for my wife and I. Bag drop and check in were handled well and with a smile. Range was convenient and we went off on time. Played in 3:30 so that was great. Greens rolled very true and a little quick. Very consistent. Fairways were in good shape too but the rough was very spotty. Played the Members tee and it was fun but not too challenging. I would play again at these prices.
Very nice course!
This was a great course that showed why golfers should come to Hilton Head. The staff was friendly and efficient.
Love This Course
I have long been a fan of Dolphin Head's layout. Now that it is no longer a private club, I expected the conditions to be diminished. That was not
the case. The course was in excellent shape, the group I was paired with were wonderful and the staff could not have been friendlier. If you have a chance ... book a round at this course.
Hidden Gem
I have visited Hilton Head for years but had not heard anyone mention Dolphin Head as must play course, but I will certainly encourage golfers I know to play a round on this very nice layout. The holes were well routed and had a flow that made the round very enjoyable. Also, the course was in good condition for the heat of August. Staff was friendly and helpful and the entire experience was a pleasure.
Awesome experience
I come to Hilton Head every Summer for vacation the last 10 years or so and have never heard of this course. Saw it this year on golfnow.com, went to the actual course website and booked it through there and saved $20. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and we basically had the course to ourselves. Saw a few previous reviews about the greens being slow and laughed at that as soon as I stepped on the putting green. They were fast and rolled PHENOMENAL. I was putting around one night at Harbour Town this week and these greens were comparable in speed and I thought even rolled better. Everything else with the course was great as well. Course isn't overly difficult if you have a reliable 3 wood or hybrid off the tee. Greens are more sloped then they look from the fairways, no crazy drop offs but a lot of slope from back to front. Play accordingly. Great course, can't wait to come back. And an absolute steal for what we paid.
Excellent MiniVerde greens
Tee to green the course is in above average condition and the MiniVerde Bermuda greens are some of the best putting surfaces to be found on the island. There are quite a few short dogleg par 4s but the variety of holes keeps the round interesting. Definitely a placement golf course. Fun round!
off island
Fun course to play, very good conditions except the greens were very slow...smooth but slow. Lot's of doglegs that offset the fact that the course is short. Would definitely go backwash hope that green speed would increase.
Dolphin Head Rating
Overall a good experience. Greens excellent condition but not as fast as stated by the staff.
Would definitely play again and would recommend to others. Good value v
Best greens I have seen this season
This is a private course that has select tee times for non-members - what a bonus for golfnow users!! The course was in great condition, so beautiful, and the greens were the best I have seen in Bluffton/HHI this season - fast and smooth. It was not crowded and two of us zoomed around in about 3 hours. I thought the layout was fair and fun, not too difficult from the white tees. I hope I get a chance to play here again very soon.
