Dolphin Head Golf Course
About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

The bunkers were good and the greens rolled very true. But the course was not maintained at the same level as the other 5 other courses that we played while in Hilton Head.
Great Gary Player design Tweaked by Johnson
This course was private for most of its history so it is a treat to play it. No forced carries from the senior tees though accuracy is needed. The course never went dormant this winter and the grass is in great shape.
Very nice course with difficult greens.
The hybrid Bermuda greens are in excellent shape. Very fast at about 11 or 12. With the amount of contour and this speed you have to be below the hole to make putts. Fairways and bunkers are in good condition. Plenty of fairway to keep it in play. Very good value.
Best course I've played on Hilton Head
Staff was very friendly. Course was interesting without being overly difficult. My wife and I played as a twosome in 4 hours. Some of the pin placements were very difficult. Got a great price via GolfNow. This will definitely be on our must play list next visit to Hilton Head.
A Superior experience
From start to finish Dolphin Head is a must play On Hilton Head. Too many many superlatives to list individually. If I were a resident I would join this club.
Nice to return after long hiatus
I had not played Dolphin Head in at least 10 years. It had recently opened as a public course so I snuck out on a Friday afternoon. I wasn't sure what to expect after Hurricane Matthew and was pleasantly surprised at the overall condition of the course. On the plus side a 1:20 tee time allowed me to finish before dark. On the minus side, there was no starter so a couple of twosomes and foursomes jumped my single tee time while I was on the range and I had to wait a and eventually play through. I hate to play through as I typically try to rush the hole so as not to inconvenience those allowing me to get ahead. The greens putted true and other than the rough areas, which were beat up by the debris removal, the course was very enjoyable. Unfortunately the bar was closed when I finished so I couldn't get a cold beer at the end of my round.
DOLPHHIN HEAD
Course is very good condition, tees, fairways, bunker, greens.
One of the more difficult courses from white tees
on the Island slope of 130 and challenging for a 12
handicapper.
If you can't drive 225 yards you might want to move up to gold tees
Wonderful time
Dolphin Head is the crown jewel of the Brown Group courses around Hilton Head. For January, the course was in great shape although the damage by Hurricane Matthew is very evident. There are very few straight putts on the greens so if putting is a problem, this course isn't for you. This is a shotmaker's course and I really enjoyed the challenge.
Great layout
Great course with interesting holes. Only concern was late in day the greens had little round bumps in a grid pattern. Don't know the cause. But still enjoyed the day.
Great greens tell your friends
This course is player friendly no real surprises I for one like that in a golf course. The greens were great even In the morning FAST GREEN.
Great conditions post hurricane
Friday was a great day to play so I snuck out of the office for a round at Dolphin Head. My timing was excellent since there were just a few groups ahead of me and they allowed this single to squeeze through.
First let me congratulate the groundskeeper and his crew on restoring this course quickly. The fairways are in very good shape and the greens are in super shape. There were a couple of Tee boxes that were a little rough, but who really cares about that. Traps were soft and playable. I was fortunate to keep my ball in the short stuff for the majority of the round but the rough was not extreme, so those few shots were not very frustrating.
A word about the greens - great shape but challenging with several tiered greens and several more that tilted fairly aggressively to make them tough.
All in all a very enjoyable round with a beer at the clubhouse to cap my afternoon.
A gem to play
Just opened to the public in 16 the course is great to play. In fact we are playing it again today.
Nice layout, challenging holes, a lot of doglegs
I really enjoyed the course. Picturesque landscape. It was a little more open than most of the HHI courses I've played but I imagine that was because of all the trees lost to Hurricane Matthew. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Will absolutely play there again.
Good course
Live on the island first time playing this course. The course has nice layout but saw no bag boy when I arrived loaded my own clubs. The pace of play was very slow. I doubt I will play here again better places to play in the area.
This course was in excellent condition
All around great facility. Challenging play with beautiful views. What a lovely course. Enjoyed it immensely.
Fast Greens
Corse in great shape following Hurricane, especially the greens which are quicker than most I played,d on the island so far. Always stay below the hole. Traps have great sand and are well maintained. Back 9 more fun to play then front but overall very good.
