Dolphin Head Golf Course
About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Course is a good value for the money. Course conditions were the best of four courses we have played so far in the HH area on our trip here. The greens were fast but smooth and true. The course design is very nice and has good aesthetics.
Typical tree lined Hilton Head GC
I found the front nine a bit boring while the back nine some some very nice holes including a very dramatic risk or reward par 5 finishing hole. Over all condition of the course was good although it still shows some signs from the hurricane that came through last year. The starter told us to stay bellow the flags because the greens where fast, Well he has most definitely right as no one in our foursome made anything from above the hole longer than three feet and we all putted of the green at least once. The range is narrow and at this time you need to hit from Mats. It is also very short as the distance to the end of the range is only 235 yds. The grill has a good selection of sandwiches and salads and all employees we came into contact treated us very well. Overall it is a typical Hilton Head golf course.
not the most memorable, but certainly enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it as a good "fill in"
Nice round
Dolphin Head is a nice course. Played from the gold tees, which made it interesting and made me hit a lot of different shots. Greens are very fast, which was tough for the first time out in 2017. Amenities were typical for a Hilton Head course. Staff was okay, at the turn the server in the snack bar seemed a little overwhelmed. The ranger gave us a little speech about pace of play which was irritating when we'd played the front nine in almost exactly 2 hours and had no one in front and no one behind. Thought it was slightly overpriced but still a good day of golf.
Good design, fun course
This course has good variety. Greens are among the fastest on HHI. Most have some undulations, which challenges even lower handicap players. However, they roll well. Pace of play can be a problem. Our round was ruined by a 2.5 hr. back nine. With no sign of a ranger in sight. We waited 10-15 mins on every tee! How about a refund?!
Put this on your must play list.
Playing several times a week, this is my type of course. It is the type of track that makes you think your way around to keep it interesting rather than a wide open boring style of course. Fair though for higher hadicappers, it is one of the nicer places I have played on the island this winter. Fast interesting greens and perfect weather made it a great experience. Would definitely play again.
I won't play here again
Each year my friends and I (as a group of 3) schedule a 4 day golf trip. In the past we have played in Myrtle Beach, SC, Pinehurst, NC, and this year decided to play in Hilton Head. We did our research and found some courses that we thought would be both challenging and fun at the same time. We arrived at the course and just got a bad vibe from the start. We were told(over and over again) that the pace of play is a 4 hour round. There was a twosome in front of us and a foursome behind us. Pace of play was good but after the 3rd hole, the group in front of us took off. At the turn, we were at 2:10 but were warned for being slow because there was an open hole in front of us. However, we weren’t holding anyone up behind us because there was no one there. At the start of hole 10, we were told again to speed it up and when we stated that we weren’t holding anyone up, we were told that we could either speed it up or be given a raincheck. Mysteriously, a golfer appeared WALKING behind us at the start of 12. He had to be a scratch golfer (probably a club pro) because he was hitting his tee shots 270+. (Mind you I am not a hacker and shoot regularly in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s) It forced us to speed up (i.e. not really play the course) but surprisingly at hole 15, he was no longer there; gone. So we know they sent him out for the sole purpose of pushing us faster. The price was good but with the treatment, it’s not worth the return visit. Course is in good shape, is challenging but not too difficult to score well but the management team isn’t interested in people like me playing there. When I visit a course for a golf vacation, I want to enjoy the course, not play speed golf.
Great course with nice challenging layout
Good course for all levels #18 ends your round with a memorable layout
Would definitely play this course again.
Staff very friendly
Not a flat spot on a green
Great layout. Greens were very challenging as I couldn't find a flat spot on any of them.
Course has nice layout
Nice track. Grass not real green yet but nice layout.
First timers
We really enjoyed this challenge. It was well maintained and we would recommend all. Thanks for the great day of golf
Worth Playing
Course is in good condition. The greens are really challenging having significant slope mostly back to front so must stay below pin. Condition of greens is excellent and they are fast.
Good tee selection for all player skills.
Dolphin Head
Course was in good condition considering the island is still cleaning up after the hurricane. The staff was very friendly and the course was easy to navigate. I would recommend playing this course.
Scruffy
We were a two ball in between two 4 balls so pretty slow, articulately at the turn where people must stop and take a break , we didn't and waited twenty minutes to play our next shot. Course was very scruffy , fairways and particularly tee boxes. Greens very fast and up unless you knew exact yard ages it was difficult if you went past the pins, some impossible putts unless the hole stopped them. All in all I think this needs a bit of TLC
First round
My first round of the year, 54 dollars by far the most reasonable in town. The staff were nice from the moment I got there, we were the first ones out for the day. The tee boxes were just ok, the fairways were good and the greens are fast as a mother. If you are above the hole it's a three putt. Took my a while but by the back nine I had it figured out and played a little over my handicap.
nice course; great value
During the month of Feb this course offers a $ 35 round all day Sunday-- can't beat that. The course is very good condition; greens are fast and tough. Even with a crowded course we finished in a few minutes over 4 hours.
Great course
Would play over and over. The nicest course we've played.
Course condition was excellent especially for February.
When most courses are dormant in February Dolphin Head was much greener and as lush as possible for the time of year. The greens were excellent. I will return.
