Challenging but fair
Played in late December fairways and greens were in great shape. Someone must have made the greens keeper mad that morning the pin positions for the weather conditions were beyond tough. Overall the course is challenging and fair not many shots that aren't right in front of you to see. I recommend anyone in the area go oit and play it.
A bit overpriced for the area and the competition
Nice course, a fair amount of trouble and nice green complexes. They did not change the cups from the day prior which was not a nice impression.
Great Course, Still too Expensive
This course is great to play. It's short, but the wind comes into play and knocks down the distance on a good amount of shots. Everything was great, from staff to pace of play. The only drawback is that this course is very overpriced. It's worth paying $85 bucks for the prime tee times and about $60 for twilight rates. All that being said, I would definitely play this course over the Harbor course if in Wild Dunes.
God course but Too expensive
The course condition is good, both fairway and green. But if you have paid the full rack rate and expecting spectacular views then thou will be disappointed. There are some water views at the end but very average view. For me it turned out a great round. I booked a 4pm game at $75 and was able to start the game at 3pm. Finishing at 730pm, way before sunset.
Low Country Resort Golf at its Best
Tom Fazio's first solo design. It's been renovated recently, with greatly expanded greens. 6503 yards from the tips, but plays longer due to sea-level elevation and ocean winds. Final two holes are the climax -- both right on the beach. 18th is a pretty par 3; used to be a par 5 before hurricane washed it out. A bit pricey at the top-end rack rate, but if you can get a deal, well worth it. Lots of OB/hazards (and gators), but very fun to play. Pace of play rating is low due to a bad foursome in front of us -- non-golfers comped a round by another resort because of a screw-up. Still, it was a very long round.
First time I played here in about 3 years and was amazed by the excellent condition, particularly the greens. Although quite firm, the putting surfaces were absolutely perfect....fast, smooth and true. The last three holes were renovated a couple of years ago (#18 changed to a par 3 from a par 5 due to beach erosion and the green on #16 enlarged), and made for a great finish. This course has a fabulous collection of par 3 holes, and although the overall length of the course is short by today's standards it is still challenging and very fun to play. Wind is typically a factor due to proximity to the ocean. Can't wait to go back real soon.
Worth the trip!
Loved the last few holes that end along the Ocean. Picture worthy! Very well maintained track. I had a great time here! My only knock was the $150 fee, somewhat expected and I don't like to knock a course on it's price, but felt a little overpriced on the whole.
Links Course
Excellent conditions. New carts. Scoreable par 5's. Love holes #5, #13 and #18 in particular. All staff were great!
Must play in Charleston
Wild Dunes Links was the finale of a four-day golf buddies trip to Charleston. The weather was fantastic, the course was in great shape, especially considering recent heavy rain, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. It was the perfect course to tie a bow on our trip.
While the group loved the course, none us felt the experience was quite worth the $145+ tax price tag. Consensus was $125, but why split hairs? #17 & #18 are great finishing holes based on the ocean views alone. It was disappointing to finish on a par 3, but understandable given Mother Nature's persistent disregard for the wonderful signature par 5 that once existed and has since been partially reclaimed by the Atlantic Ocean. If you play the course correctly you'll use every club in your bag. If you are a fairly long hitter you won't need your driver much, if at all.
The biggest complaint my group had was the mosquitoes. The mild temperatures and the soggy surroundings created swarms of annoying, Deet-tolerant blood suckers. The starter even sprayed us down before we teed off, but it didn't seem to help much.
I recommend this course as a must play for anyone, at least once. It's more scenic and more enjoyable than the tighter, quirky Harbor Course, but you'll pay the difference.
Fun Play!
I really enjoyed playing the Links course. The staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating, and what is not to like about a course that has holes along the marsh and ocean??? The wind made the course play very difficult, but very, very fun!
A must play Fazio classic
We had a great time on a fabulous course. New greens were in excellent shape, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate our group.
Great golf course and staff
New favorite place to get away from the every day hustle 'n bustle. Take family and friends to let loose on a few hundred golf balls. Range is great for the family in the evening. If your coming to Charleston make sure to play this true Tom Fazio links golf course. Last few holes are right on the ocean. Great views on the beach and golf course. Worth every penny. Thank you links staff for a great experience we will be back.
Not worth the money.
The course is very scenic and the 17th on the ocean is quite the hole. The problem is the greens. They were way too firm and did not hold any spin. The pins were in ridiculous paces for a weekend. The greens were overseeded with rye grass and we're starting to die off because they weren't watering them. The result was concrete. I tried to repair an old pitch mark and bent my repair tool. I wouldn't play here again until after a heavy rain. The range was mats only for no reason. The course is also shoe horned in and the houses ruin the scenery of the natural dunes.
Great round
Played the Links at Wild Dunes this afternoon. Payed the afternoon rate of $80 in the offseason. Thought this was a touch much but its Charleston and things are more expensive and it did include range balls. The range was mat only today which I hate but hey they were free. The course is in excellent condition. Tees, fairways, and greens all over seeded and very nice. Greens rolled smooth and were pretty fast. The staff was nice and friendly enough. The front 9 is pretty flat and is the easier of the two nines. It also seemed to have less wind. The back is where the challenge begins with more elevation change and wind really affecting each shot. The ocean side holes are spectacular, however, the par 5 ocean side 18th has been shortened to a 150 yard par 3 due to beach erosion. I would recommend a round here especially with the afternoon rate or any other discounts you might could find.
Wild Dunes Golf Resort (Links)
The Good: Rugged, visually appealing layout is one of Tom Fazio's first designs. Located just thirty minutes from downtown Charleston, Wild Dunes is the mecca of Low Country golf. Layout winds through a housing community and is carved out of sand dunes alongside the Atlantic Ocean. Strong course conditions and small, undulating green complexes provide a true challenge for the low handicapper. Very good service and excellent pace of play for a resort course. While the layout has lost a little luster with losing the Par 5 18th to multiple hurricanes, still a very fun course with good variety of holes. Nice clubhouse and full restaurant and bar.
The Bad: Not the fault of the course, but losing the superb closing hole is a big blow to overall experience. Greens can be a little shaggy and slow. Limited on-course amenities including no GPS and not enough restroom areas. Driving range only allows irons and is mats only. Overpriced at $155 during peak season. The new Par 3 18th hole just seems anti-climatic.
The Verdict: Once the crown jewel of the Charleston golf area, the Links course is still a very good course despite falling on tough times. A fun, sporty layout with some great closing holes.
Best Hole: The long Par 4 17th is camera worthy with the ocean just to the left.
25 years later and it is still a top course
The Links course at Wild Dunes was one of my favorite courses from the first time I played it 25 years ago. The layout is fantastic and it is a true challenge of golf. While on the course a club employee stopped to talk to my playing partners who he knew and told them that they are closing the course to redo everything, even the cart paths. I was sad to see the 18th hole this time around, erosion has ruined the hole to the point that it is almost unplayable. They have this true test par 5 turned into a 300 par 4 with no room to the left of the hole due to Mother Nature washing it out to sea. The views are spectacular all over the course and as I said it is a good challenge.
Good course but Too expensive
