San Marcos Golf Resort
About
The golf course at the San Marcos Golf Resort boasts an impressive list of past players that includes presidents and celebrities. The golf course is nestled on a property in downtown Chandler that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although it has a desert landscape, the course is still lush with a canal that runs through it, a lake, and plush Bermuda grass greens, the former two creating water hazards that come into play on several holes. The San Marcos Golf Resort course is challenging with each hole having at least three bunkers. The two most difficult holes on the golf course are two lengthy par 4s, the fourth and the 10th.

Morning view down the Par-5 5th fairway. A strong drive, especially to the center-right fairway, sets you up to go for the green in two! Photo submitted by vmustang on 04/25/2021

Good Golf Right in the Heart of Downtown Chandler
For years I have been staying in Chandler, but I had never played San Marcos. We took a shot on a Friday morning and we knew by the warm welcome we received in the Pro Shop that we were going to have fun. There is no driving range and we met our pairing partners Sunny and Brandon on the putting green. They helped us with the local knowledge which includes avoiding the hard to see canal that cuts through the course and how to play the target golf holes strategically. The wind was the major factor of the day, gusting to 20 MPH at times. The greens were not fast, but were tricky to figure out, The bunker sand is compacted and treacherous to hit out of. We found the course to be a wonderful old layout, however the beat up conditions on some tees and fairways were a downer. Fortunately the 19th Hole is outstanding with cold beer, sumptuous sandwiches and a friendly staff. I would give SM another go in the future. It is certainly an old treasure in the heart of the revitalized downtown.
nice course, but not worth $
it is a nice course, not sure it justifies the cost... good wide fairways, we got in early ahead of the crowds, back nine we could see the line up at the tee's. if you do go, make it as early as possible. nice 19th hole!
Yardage
Seems like yardage is really wrong on score card Sand traps some have sand done nothing. Over all course good shape Slow pace but Marshall did do his job and sped up some group’s.
Fun track
The starter runs a tight ship. So get there on time. The course is in great shape. Greens putt true. This is a short fun parkland style course. If you aren’t long of the tee or spray it left or right, you’ll likely find your ball and still have a shot. Holes run next to each other; don’t feel ashamed to yell “fore!” if a shot gets away from you, happens to the best of us
Good time!
My partner and I had a good time. Staff was great including restaurant.
No dring range. Flat course but decent shape. I have played it 3 times.
It's an OK course for the money.
However, be ready for very hard, very small greens with dirt (not sand traps on either side. Also be ready for holes #4 and #5. From the blue tees they are both 464 yards long. Hole #4 has significantly more tree hazards than hole # 5 and hole #4 is the #1 handicap hole on the course... yet in the courses wisdom #4 is a par 4 and #5 is a par 5.
This is an old course with a lot of heritage. First course to have grass greens in Arizona. The design is older and traditional but remains challenging with relatively small greens which are usually well protected with bunkers. Missing left or right is challenging and it is almost always best to miss short. The greens were in good shape the rest of the course is fair given the pricing. The staff are friendly and the Pro was welcoming and helpful. Driving range is basic.
