Shalimar Golf Club
About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2025.
Shalimar Golf Club is a nine-hole golf course in Tempe. The course is best for beginners but it has enough challenges in store to make it a great option for more advanced players who want a quick round. The layout is comprised of three par 3s and six par 4s. It weaves through a smattering of mature trees and across gently rolling hills. The small greens can be quite tricky, especially since there are strategically placed bunkers lurking along some. Water hazards come into play on a few holes, including the 155-yard fifth, which is one of the golf course's toughest. You'll have to pull off a carry over the area's biggest lake to a heavily bunkered, narrow green. Shalimar Golf Club's ninth hole is the most well known though, mainly for the island green. In addition to the water, there are also four bunkers surrounding the green.

Don't waste your time or money
This course was under reseeding when we played it and the greens were thicker than shag carpet. We knew it was under repair when we decided to play it, but it was bad enough that the staff should have just closed it. The staff was nice enough but they didn't handle the situation very well when the group behind us actually hit me with a drive after hitting into us all day long. This course is wedged into a small area and makes getting hit from any angle or any hole a real possibility. Getting hit with a golf ball and ridiculously unreasonable greens means I won't be going back here, overpriced especially compared to other courses around the Tempe area. Don't waste your time and money.
Caddyshack?
Review from April round:
We dont live far from Shalimar so we thought why not try a hot deal for $10...it is what it is which is a small run down albeit cute and quiet 9 hole course/CC in Tempe, everyone very friendly and the greens were actually excellent however everything else would need a total renovation to take it back where it may have once been. The Par 3 #5 was my fav hole, its a green surrounded by a pond with brush and foliage that circles the entire green and from the back tees its a 160 yard blind shot which I found very unique. For $10 I would recommend but not for the usual $25 they ask for, the draft IPA's in the clubhouse were perfect and again very friendly staff and people.
Nice course to work on short game
We haven't played this course in several years. The last time the course went counter-clockwise. Now it's clockwise. I liked it better the old way but still an overall fun course to work off the short game rust. The only part I didn't like was driving into the 9th hole. The outdoor restaurant is right behind it making an overshot dangerous. As a weekend warrior I laid up to save glassware and angry restaurant patrons.
You get what you pay for
My brother-in-law and I played Shalimar for fun on a Monday morning. Course was in ok shape. Price was just about right for riding 9 with the summer rate. The main issue we had was congestion with 2 different groups. There was a foursome on course that was slowing everyone up and no ranger or course attendant to advise on what to do. They did let a few folks play through but otherwise it backed everyone up. Once we did play through we ran into a five-some. And that's where our half round of golf came to a dead stop. And again, with no ranger or course attendant around, you pretty much had to pass them at your own will. So, good course, could have finished 9 in an hour without the holdups.
Nice!!!
Best twelve dollars I've ever spent! I really enjoy this course and it's nice they post some hot deals on GolfNow so You can get the discounted rate during the on season. There is a pretty nice friendly staff. The driving range is somewhat short so if your a long ball hitter don't use your driver. At least a couple of the par fours are driveable if you hit the ball far. Nice to play a course that has plenty of shade trees.
Foot Golf is getting in the way
I have been golfing at this course for a few years now. My grandfather golfed at this course and used to bring me along with him. I have a lot of memories at this course. The addition to foot golf wasn't that bid of a deal at first, it was actually kinda comical watching them play the game. However this weekend when my wife and i played the course there was a couple really large groups that we not only walking but riding in carts as well, and would drive all over the course, they were very loud and had music playing that was also loud. They ended up being in the way on a few holes and really kinda ruined the pace of play. Im not one to complain very often, just let things go, I had a good round, shot well and the weather was awesome, but these footgolfers are getting ridiculous. really makes me think twice about playing here again.
Tucked away
Tucked away in a Mesa neighborhood, Shalimar is a course one would never know it is there from the main roads. This course is a nice little secluded hideaway to get in a quick nine holes on the way home from work. Not too difficult in play, but enough to be able to use a majority of the clubs in your bag.
Good for 9 holes
This is a good course that is challenging on some holes. The greens were in good shape but the pace of play is very slow. You'll wait on every hole.
Morning Warm up
Exceeded my expectations. Staff professional and friendly. The last three holes are challenging and can eat your lunch. Greens are smallish. Putting is slow but true. A good value tucked into an established neighborhood. Put the driver away for this course. A pleasure to play
handy for nine
greens slow. some tee boxes in rough shape. overall average.
Enjoyable
The course is designed for beginners to high-handicap players, but is challenging for more advanced players working on their short game.
There are good practice facilities - grass driving range, pitching green and putting greens.
Staff are friendly and efficient. Facilities are excellent, including pro-shop and restaurant.
Overall an enjoyable experience and excellent value with GolfNow discount.
Shalimar
The course was very wet, but it had just rained a lot, so was to be expected. Greens were pretty good. The staff was very friendly.
Shalimar tryout
We stay in Mesa for the month of January and usually have friends come to stay with us from up north. Many of our friends play golf, so we enjoy trying new courses if the price is right. We found a good deal on golfnow, so played at 1:30 pm. The weather was cool that day, but we enjoyed the course, and were happy to find that our price included a cart. We will no doubt be back if we can find another good deal.
Nice 9 hole course
The course is great for riding or walking. The water hazards and bunkers certainly makes the course challenging. Did not try the restaurant but the food smelled great.
Shalimar in Tempe AZ
Course is showing signs of age; is rough. We paid $12 to play here and it is a $12.00 course. A good course to get a little practice and enjoy the Arizona weather.
Shalimar
Course was in nice shape, pace of play was excellent, staff person at check in was not that friendly, could maybe use a class in customer service. Other than that it was a great day of golf
Shalimar
Would never play this course at full rate. Overseed on greens was spotty and tee boxes were chewed up. Service was friendly and courteous.
