Comstock/River at Empire Ranch Golf Course
About
Empire Ranch Golf Course, situated in the picturesque Carson Valley, features 27 holes of golf that overlook the Carson River. Located just minutes from downtown Carson City, Empire Ranch's three individual nines offer three different 18-hole combinations that have a convenient location but still provide a challenging golf getaway. The Comstock/River layout features lakes and wetlands coming into play throughout. The fairways are also well guarded by strategically placed bunkers. It provides a fair test, but the golf course is forgiving enough for beginning and intermediate players. In addition to the three courses, Empire Ranch also offers extensive practice facilities and a staff of PGA Professionals who can provide golf instruction.

Under repair
They have 27 holes, but are repairing 18 of them from the flood. You had to play 4 or 5 holes of each 9hole course. It was marked ok, and enjoyed all 18 holes. The greens were in good shape and the ruff was semi-long and green? I will play it again but it's far from my house.
Terrible
This course is NOT playable! Staff did not even mention the bad conditions when we called for tee time and not when we walked in! Then we were handed a list of 18 (all over the 27) to play. The course already has a lot of water, but now even more, not shown anywhere. Sand traps are half weeds, smell is bad and to top it off, there are NO directions on how to find these scattered holes!
Can't Fight Mother Nature
I like the course very much especially via online deals. Unfortunately with the extreme weather we have had in the Reno / Carson Valley areas, Mother Nature has not been kind to this course. There has been a lot of storm damage, mostly from flooding. I played on 3/14 and only 12 of the 27 holes were open for play. The conditions are obviously not the fault of the course management but rather Mother Nature and I don't see it being back to normal for at least a few months ( my unprofessional opinion).
.
Horrible
Water damage from floods has only 10 of the 27 holes available spread out on two courses. The stagnant water smells awful and you can't escape it. Additionally, nobody seems to take the time to repair their ball marks on the greens and they are in incredibly poor shape. Staff has a ton of work ahead of them....
played here few timesover the years fairly easy
winter conditions so it was so so.
no title
Every fairway had standing water and ball would land in it. Very windy and cold. I thought about quitting after the third but played only eight holes. Would not recommend playing this course until drying out and weather gets better.
Cold
The course was in good shape for a November. It was pretty cold and windy but still fun. Greens were in good shape.
Windy Day
Not the best day for golfing with strong winds at mid day. But if you are willing to battle some wind, these three 9 hole courses are a great value. Green fairways are somewhat level and are framed by distant mountains. Today had several small wet spots but no pools on the fairways. Sand in traps is very hard so no raking needed. The carts are reliable but show their age. Pro shop and restaurant staff are always pleasant.
Impressive
I have played Empire Ranch a number of times over the years. I have also played numerous courses throughout California (yes, I did play Pebble) and this course ranks in the top twenty for course layout, course conditions, the staff (including management), pace of play, and level of difficulty (depending on which tees you play from). I would highly recommend this course to any golfer (low to high handicap). My only advice would be to put a lot more sand in the traps.
Carson City Bargain
Well maintained course with lush fairways and greens. Fast pace of play midday w/cart. Mosquitoes can be a negative but golf shop has repellant for use or sale. Staff was friendly and informative and flexible. With 27 holes we were able to avoid a slow group ahead at the turn and play a different 9 that was wide open.
Empire
It is a nice course and has 3 nines so you can mix it up on different visits.
Empire red and blue 9's
The course was very recently mowed, and lots of loose grass lay on most fairways ( lost two balls in the fairway} Other than this, course was in good condition. Pace of play was good (finished in 3 3/4 hours). Sand traps could use some work as they are very hard packed. Extensive wetlands bordering fairways offer continuous challenges.
Fun course to play!!
Greens were in perfect shap especially this early in the season. Only a couple had some damage. Had to play two club wind late in day but enjoyed round. Friendly staff.
Interesting layout
This course is truly better once you have played it a few times as many of the hazards are hidden and club selection off the tee is huge! Before playing, check the wind conditions.....that valley can get extremely windy. My round started off at 15-20mph but finished at 35-40mph.....it can wear you out.
Will be back to try on a calm day....overall, well maintained for early spring.
+++++
Great time. Love this course
Good course for average golfer
I like to play this course with my 79 year old uncle. The forward tees are manageable for him as he doesn't hit it more than about 180 yards anymore off the tee. I can play the whites or blues and its a good test for me, a 20 handicapper. If my game is in reasonable shape, I won't lose more than a ball or two. A couple of the par 5s are reachable in 2 shots, and the par 3's have a good variety of distance. I expect to play here many times in the remaining years I have to play golf.
The bar serves excellent hot dogs and has friendly staff.
First Round of the year
Greens were in pretty good shape with the exception of players not bothering to repair their green marks. It's like the local drivers, they don't respect other drivers, these golfers don't respect the course, the game or other players.
It's early but there is so much goose do do on the course, it's hard to find an untouched lie. Not sure what can be done about that problem. It's probably an issue at all the other valley courses with ponds.
Great Course
Generous fairway, well maintained course, and friendly staff. Well worth the money.
Nice course and great staff
I've played this course twice in 2 weeks and enjoyed it each time. There are a few fairways that could use a little more water but it sure gives you the added benefit of longer drives. The greens play true and fast and the tee boxes are perfect. Ryan in the pro shop is very friendly and helpful. If you have a chance I recommend playing Empire Ranch.
