About
Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

Golfer Reviews
quick round
For this time of year the greens were in very good condition. spring has just stared so the course showed some winter ware. Tee boxes were in good shape, fairways rolled good. Three of us finished in 4 hrs, I like that. Always enjoy Toiyabe, even though it is a somewhat difficult course. the mountain views are wonderful.
Other Than the...
wind, this course is terrific. I was literally blown off the course my first two times playing it and didn't get to the back nine. This time I was almost all alone the entire round and got to play the back nine. It's nestled in trees and is quite lovely. Lots of water on this course and lots of wind. I will definitely play again but only when the wind is tolerable...
Great winter course conditions
Played this course after recent storms. While there were wet areas and carts weren’t allowed, the course was in great shape and played fair. I enjoyed walking the course, which provided a different perspective than the normal, cart golf.
I’ll be back to enjoy this course again as well as the 19th hole!
Thanks to everyone there for an enjoyable round.
TOO WINDY!
This was the second time I attempted to play this course. The first time, I was literally blown off the course after a few holes as the wind was incredibly intense.
Yesterday was almost as bad and only half the course was open - which was not apparent when I signed up on T.O. It should have been.
I was the ONLY person on the course. It was so wet the cart would often skid. I give up on Toiiyabe. Like I said, the course should never have been open yesterday!
TOO WINDY!
I think this course may be terrific but I hit it on a hurricane wind day, or so it seemed. I tried to gut it out but last just six holes... Eager to try again and hopefully I won't be blown away!
Beautiful scenery
The course layout was excellent and challenging. Super undulated, very fast greens. Good value compared with Reno and Carson City courses.
Great, until you hit the greens.
The course is great and gorgeous. However, the greens were either fast or slow, not consistent. The pin placements were to difficult. Many on slopes that were impossible to maintain.
