Toiyabe Golf Club
About
Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Toiyabe Golf Club (formerly known as Thunder Canyon Country Club and Lightning "W" Ranch Golf Course.) has a picturesque landscape of shimmering lakes, meandering streams, and towering pines. This course has a traditional layout that features contoured fairways and fast, generous greens. There are nearly 50 bunkers strategically placed throughout and water comes into play on 14 holes. Elevated tees provide spectacular views of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. The golf course is challenging but still player-friendly with seven sets of tees. In addition to the course, Toiyabe Golf Club also offers practice facilities that include chipping and sand practice areas along with an expansive putting green.

Swamp Land
As with all Duncan Golf Management courses you need to bring mud clothes. The course is a mess. Standing water on virtually every hole. Plugged lies and mud balls all day long. What used to be a great track is now being destroyed by massive amounts of over watering. This s an everyday occurrence. Over watering is ruining everything. Including the greens. Such a shame.
Great Course
A really great course in the Reno-Tahoe area,
demanding and rewarding, amazing layout.
Only down side was the greens. They were bumpy and beat up. The fairways have puddles of water on certain areas. Overall a great experience.
Play often, but miss the GPS on the carts that were there last year.
Perfect weather and beautiful scenery but challenging game, totally enjoyable.
Weather in the high 70’s with 10mph breeze. The design was interesting and challenging layout on the mountain hills. There were quite a few bunkers surrounding the greens that makes it more fun. Greens were not consistent, some fast but the others too slow. Also some greens needed more close attention. Fairways have quite a few wet spots due to overwatering. Some lakes need more chemicals and clean water flowing to eliminate strong ordor.
Seems like every body came out to play golf and the management must be over jealous to accommodate too many players. The pace.very slow but most players don’t seem to mind much and the players were very kind and courteous.
The pro shop staff were helpful and friendly and the starter, Darryl, was very friendly and made the players feel comfortable.
We will definitely return here when it wouldn’t be too busy, although we have to drive up 170 miles. We love to travel to play this game.
Again, thanks for making us possible to play at a such a super nice golf course.
I like the course I have played it before. The rough was longer than usual, I like it made it a little harder to play. Fairways were very nice shape, beautiful day wonderful company had a great time.
A stout test
Layout is spectacular, and conditions are likely very good most all the time (recent rain before play had wet areas within bunkers). Although holes play long (every par 5 has carry over water hazard to nearby green), they still demand shots to be hit "on line" (placed). To hit it otherwise will lead to inflated scores on every single hole.
This is not a course to "find" your game, rather it is one to "test" your game.
bad greens
First time back playing this course after the VID. Course has a lot of standing water. Very disappointed in the greens. Not up to Toiyabe standards. Slow, bumpy and what appears to be damage from players not repairing ball marks. I love this course because of the greens, now I will have to reconsider.
Pace of Play Slow
Enjoyed my first outing here. Course was very wet, a bit surprised for an afternoon outing. Greens in excellent shape, fairways average as well as tees.
Staff was great.
Beautiful layout and extremely well maintained
Course is a jewel. Greens are fast so some adjustments are needed. Just enough trouble to keep it interesting. Bring your range finder since no 100/150/200 yard markers on course and you're dependent on sprinkler heads. Definitely amust play.
Bring ankle weights if you weigh less than 150 in late afternoon.
"Holy hurricanes Batman! I just saw a golf cart blow across the fairway like a tumbleweed..."
Played twice, late afternoon.
Must Play
Very nice course and friendly people. There are a few tough holes. For me the course was a little long. The wind really picked up after about 2:00, and that really helped me on several holes. Overall, it was a beautiful day. I will play this course everytime I visit Reno.
