San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

San Juan Oaks Golf Club Photo submitted by cjhsieh on 09/25/2012
Great views and outstanding challenge
This course makes you hit every shot. You need to bomb drives and hit delicate little chips. The greens are fair but I was playing in a light rain so I imagine they are much faster when the sun comes out. It may be in the middle of nowhere but it is worth the drive. The staff was fine but when we arrived the power had just gone out and without a register they were completely lost. Outside of that it was a great day for golf!
Out of nowhere comes San Juan
From a populated town to a destination in Farmland come See San Juan Oaks surrounded by the beauty and hills and valleys - it takes through canyons of views. The truly challenging layout brings out your fear or the best of your game. The friendly welcoming staff was warm and welcoming. Most definitely one of the courses you can find time to play if you can.
Isolated Gem that May be Priced a Bit High
San Juan is a great course and well maintained. The location is a bit isolated which surprises me that the fee is in the $90 range. Reduce the rate by $15 and I would play a lot more.
Challenging Layout
The front plays easier than the back nine but when winds kicks up be ready to find the best of your skills. Also a key mention is the friendly welcoming staff.
Always a Joy
I have played San Juan many times and even joined the Mission Club recently because it's always a great experience playing there.
Beautiful views!!! Challenging to All Levels
7,000+ from the Tips.
Tight downhill landing areas off several tees with hazards along almost every hole. If you lose control of your golf ball for stretches, things can get a bit dicey.
Fairways were excellent.
Large greens with multiple tiers.
This course has something for everyone
Great views and course layout but the greens were just aerated so our putts did not run true. The pace was good and the course was challenging, Definitely coming back with some friends and hopefully NO sand on the greens.
Great Day!
Although the greens were sanded, the ball followed the break 90% of the time and the course as a hole was in excellent condition!
Course layout is very good.
I enjoy playing this course normally, but Saturday play was ridiculously slow! We teed of about 1:00 pm and were unable to finish playing the back nine because of the slow play and getting dark about 6:15pm. If there were course marshals, they were not doing there job!
SLow pace of play
Played at two pm several beginner novice groups cause terribly slow play and I walked in after five holes
Not worth the $$
Except for the greens the course is not in good condition. The bunkers are unplayable and the tee boxes are rounded and generally in poor shape. A good course for $50, not for $110.
Best Valentines Gift Ever!
I couldn't have had a better Valentines day. Wife went to work, I played golf! I've played here many times before, but the online rate of $49 with a cart was so good, we went around twice! ($25 replay). They fairways were surprisingly good considering all of the rainfall NorCal has gotten over the last month. The greens were receptive but not soft, rolling very true. The bunkers were, of course, destroyed. This weather has been tough on bunkers everywhere. Free drop. No question, this is a challenging course, more so when the rough in in US Open condition like it is now! Hasn't been much opportunity to mow, so...
If you've never been, go. If you've been, go again!
Soggy as expected, but an awesome day on a great course.
San Juan Oaks remains at the top of my favorite Bay Area courses. With its pristine environment, its challenging layout, and great facilities, the only thing that can go wrong here is of your own making.
We played a week after the torrential rains (atmospheric river) in January and the course was still soggy with the rough being really difficult. The bunkers were not in playing condition with soggy/muddy or solid lies. However, the greens were in great shape, fast enough despite being very receptive. And the fairways were firm enough although there was no run out.
Our foursome really enjoyed our round and except for having to make the 45 minute drive, we agree it is our favorite south bay course especially with a GolfNow discount.
Sweet
This course is always in sweet shape. One of my favorites on the central coast.
Great review! Thanks and it's good to know that balls aren't plugging at SJO. I can feel better about planning a visit soon. Also, didn't know about the reasonable replay rate. Congrats on a happy marriage BTW!
