San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

San Juan Oaks Golf Club Photo submitted by cjhsieh on 09/25/2012
one of my favorites
I have played here several times and have never found the course in poor condition.
Excellent course condition
Challenging greens. Back nine is lovely. I always have a great experience at San Juan Oaks.
Good times!
One of my favorite tracks in Northern California. Great location and challenging layout lead to a test of skill.
Great Course - Super Value
Long commute but well worth the drive. The course was in great shape and was very challenging. One of the best golf courses in Bay Area at a very reasonable price. Haven't played San Juan Oaks in a couple of years, I will plan and schedule a few events the remainder of 2015.
course and play - terrific
Course is in great shape, greens are a little soft but wonderful condition now - check on when they will be punched. Awesome day!
Beware the ball-gobbling back nine
What a hidden gem 45 minutes south of San Jose. The setting is picturesque and pastoral. No houses or other buildings distract from the beauty of the the hills and crooked trees that populate an interesting layout. The scorecard depicts ponds on seven holes of the front nine, but they are really only in play on the two par 3s and the risk-reward par-5 ninth. Where balls disappear is the stunning, yet difficult, back nine. There's more elevation changes and more wetlands as cross hazards. You really need to know where to hit it on several holes, notably nos. 14-15-18. The course is lush this spring, making it difficult to find balls hit into the thick clover cover just off the fairways. The traps do need some TLC, although smooth, slick greens make up for any shortcomings in course conditioning. With a sprawling clubhouse great for lunch or drinks, San Juan Oaks is worth the drive for a full day of relaxation in God's country.
Fun & Quick
Very friendly at check in. Marshal was able to get us on 20 minutes early. We finished in under 4 hours. This is the fourth time playing here. Pace of play always seems to be pretty quick. Conditions of the course were very good. For March, the surrounding hillsides were all green and lush. Made for a lot of lost balls if you went OB. Only complaint I have is all the traps were rock hard and compacted.
Great Layout
Great Layout and excellent conditions. All except the sand traps which were poorly maintained. I'm not sure why this course would put so much time and effort into the Tees, Fairways and excellent greens, but neglect the sand traps.
Tough Rough
With the damp lush rough and spring grass, weed, shrubbery it was REALY tough. US Open tough.
And starting on the tougher and unforgiving back 9, made it perhaps too hard for 15 plus handicappers? With the spring "clover" growth, one bounce beyond the rough was a list ball.
On the second (front) nine humor was restored. Only one ball eaten up as opposed to six on the first 9.
Factor of the time of year. But really tough.
Windy Course
Staff is great and course is beautiful. They double charged me for my round but were very responsive in providing a refund.
Only complaint -- they need to add sand to their bunkers. They're hard as a rock.
Off Beaten Path
Remote beautiful golf course out of the way and most enjoyable. Abundant wildlife. Fairways were in great shape and the greens were a little tricky (pin placement) but makeable. Had a friend who is a 12 handicap shoot 9 over so we thought the course was in great shape. Tha ks to Golf Now we can enjoy these types of courses.
Country club like except for one thing
Every thing was great, the course was in great shape, greens were very nice, etc. Drawback is that I left my mini jam box in the cart. I called after I left but didn't get anyone, I called the next morning and explained that I had left the item in cart 39 at 3:45 but it wasn't turned in. Now the item was behind a bag of chips in the glove box area so no one would have seen except for the person cleaning out the cart and storing it. I my book that makes the person a thief and the establishment knows who they have working in that area. I'll bet it's not more than 2 people.
I love San Juan Oaks.
This course is challenging. Especially the back nine, and especially in the afternoon when the wind picks up. But it's a fair layout. If you play from the appropriate tees (there are forced carries, so don't let your ego dictate which tees you play from) it is playable for all, or nearly all, golfers.
The Couples design is awesome. Fits in perfectly in a really beautiful location. Conditions are great (except for the greenside bunkers... hope to see that fixed come summer). Greens are fantastic. Awesome views. There are some really beautiful holes. I love playing here in the late afternoon/twilight.
It has a reputation for being "out of the way" and "difficult." It's not out of the way. It's convenient from the Monterey area, Santa Cruz or South Bay. And it only becomes excessively difficult in high winds. The normal afternoon winds are no big deal.
NOT a good option for walkers, unfortunately. Just doesn't work well for a walking round (spread out, elevation changes, etc.)
Also has a fantastic practice facility. Great place to work on your game.
And the green fees are a steal. Seriously. This is a real, legitimate resort course. Amazing bargain. Play San Juan.
great course, however.
Bunkers had very little sand in them and it seemed that sprinklers must have hit a lot of them as in spite of a couple of days in the seventies, the bunkers were wet..
Nature At Its Finest
Spectacular canyon scenery. So serene and calm you almost forget about why you are there. The front nine is moderately difficult but it's just a prologue to the perils of the back nine. The holes on the back play extremely long. Shotmaking skills are challenged. The course conditions were excellent and the greens were fast and treacherous.
Slow Play Thursday
There was no starter or course marshall!!! It was a 5 hour round due to a threesome 3 groups ahead who could not find their ball every other hole...
Started round on back nine and the groundskeeper must be on vacation. This was evident by the high weeds and grass entering some of the tee boxes...
It is still a nice facility but they need to improve a few things to bring it back to the top notch facility it once was.
A Real Gem that is hardly seen
This course is in unbelievably great shape. It boasts the best greens I have ever played in Northern California as the were absolutely immaculate. My only complaint about my whole experience there was that I had to start on the back 9, a familiar pattern these days I might add, as I have been forced to do trhis at a few places the last two months. At this course the backside is definitely a lot more challenging and it would have been great to be able to warm up by playing the relatively easy front 9 first, but that didn't happen. I literally had the course to myself as I was a single who played alone the entire game. It took several holes before I even saw another golfer as I wandered through the hills on the back 9. The fairways can be pretty tight on this part of the course and although distance is great I highly suggest you hit whatever clubs you can control and keep the ball in play. The greens as I said are great and roll perfectly true. After finishing the back 9 I moved to the front and let the scoring begin as this part of the course was relatively easy although now on the 4th hole I did catch up to a foursome and had to sit and watch nature quite a bit as they took quite a bit more time than I did and by the time we got through 8 holes another twosome was behind me but showed no interest in pairing up with me so I finished alone just missing a birdie put on number 9 but getting an easy par. My overall experience was fabulous here with everything being in great condition from the grass stalls of the driving range with clear targets to aim at, to the clean and well maintained carts and greens. This place is a little pricier than some to play and it is a bit off the beaten path which might account for the fact there was almost no one there playing (although it was after all on a Tuesday). I will definitely be returning here with a friend or two at my first opportunity as my experience here was thoroughly enjoyable.
Sand
The course needs SAND!!!!! Everything else is in outstanding condition. The bunkers are hard!!!! The bunkers are more like hazards. It's like a driving a vette with a ten mile tire. Beautiful track good greens sweet fairways just don't be in a bunker
In the Rough
Not much roll this time of year. 200 yards plus for a second shot. Sand is awful. Greens are very nice and soft. A favorite course of mine, I recommend it. Play in the mornings because the wind comes in about 1:30p
full day
I got a good deal to play in the morning with Golfnow ($45) and went back out in the afternoon using their replay rate ($25). I love the course and it was in great shape even with all of the recent rain. There was a short frost delay but breakfast was very good.
I played the course once before and it is one of my favorites in the area. The staff has been excellent and very friendly, it is one reason I made the drive from Danville.
Great practice area, great course, great bar and restaurant. My only complaint is the condition of the sand traps. I played with a member and he told me that they are usually in bad shape (no sand). It is a good reason to stay out of them.
