San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

San Juan Oaks
Love playing this course, fun layout! Greens were a little slow , but overall a great experience!
Great setting, great test of golf
Wonderful round. Played with my son from the Blue Tees (6700 or so). Moderate difficulty, except for some holes on the back nine, which are tough. Suspect from the Blacks this course would play tough.
Shot value is high on this golf course, and you are well-rewarded for a good shot. Greens seemed to roll true, although I mis-read almost every putt!
Love it
Good and challenging course. The problem recently is that no sand in the bunkers. Otherwise, it's great.
All Around Awesome
Played early, weather was perfect. Clear, pleasant, slight breeze. Grounds were impeccable. Staff was friendly. A few difficult holes but nothing impossible. Love the setting. Very peaceful!
Windy but fun
Wind was blowing 15 to 25 mph. Weather otherwise was excellent. While the course overall was in good shape, the condition of the traps left something to be desired--- no sand, lack of grooming. Considering, though, that we played for $42 each through Golf Now, it was a good deal.
greens in great shape
greens were excellent, fairways nice and great pace of play
Great course
Great course, great design, challenging but fair. Overall excellent value.
Slow play
There was an NCGA qualifier tournament in front of us that slowed down play. I understand that they will take more time for each shot and reading the greens. But there was only a 2-some in front of us and there was at least a hole gap in front of them. The Marshall told us that he warned them to move a little faster. On the 15th hole we waited 20 min on the tee box before they hit their 2nd shot. Both of them drew their shot into the ravine and took a drop. Then one of them didn't even make it across the ravine on their 2nd shot. We waited for that? We had a 4-some and waited a lot. For being an NCGA qualifier they missed a lot of fairways.
More signs needed.
The course is in nice shape, but the bunkers are hard. For first timers the course is confusing finding your way around. Many times there are many different cart paths crossing each other in many directions with no properly placed signs telling you where next hole is at. I got lost a few times and became frustrated at lack of strategically placed signs. Other than that nice course and friendly staff. It was windy in the afternoon, hard to keep cap on.
Will play again
Each hole is distinct and challenging. Lots of different options to choose on how to play the shots. Beautiful scenery and wildlife.
Fun, Challenging, Scenic, WINDY
In spite of the afternoon wind, we had a great time. Few golfers on the course made for fast paced golf. Layout is well designed with a variety of shot types required. The greens were in very good condition (lush, smooth, moderately fast, receptive) and just about difficult enough to be challenging. The only complaint about course conditioning was the lack of sand in the bunkers. The traps were virtually lacking of any sand at all. The course played longer than the 6342 white tee distance. Many second shots with hybrids or fairway woods. Driving range was above average. Golf carts were fairly new Clubcar Carts with plenty of power for the hills.
Great course, but very windy in afternoon
Second time i have played this course - was in great shape. The only regret is that I had a 3PM tee time - and it was extremely windy. Staff said that from June - August the winds kick up in the afternoon. that was an understatement. Only played 9 - ball moving on the greens. Again, course is in Great shape, Great staff - just play here in teh morning.
San Juan Oaks
Great conditions. The fairways were lush and the greens were smooth. Staff was friendly
Good to play for refresh
This course has a pretty good scenic location and the playing speed was not bad, so all the players were happy, it was good refresh to myself, even I didn't make a good score. But I encountered a snake at 14th hole, need to be carful when he is going to rummage the thicket to search a ball.
San Juan Oaks rocks
Surprised the course was virtually vacant as was driving range for our 4some afternoon tee time. Great rate, super condition, beautiful surroundings, lots of wildlife, and it was green. No water issues at SJO while other course nearby seem to be getting parched. We will be back soon. Some added sand in traps however would be welcome. Rock hard bunkers
Great layout
Course has a very nice layout with several forgiving holes, but also has some areas the you need to be on the correct side. Course knowledge is a definite advangage here and I will definitely play it differently next time. Overall, the course was in really nice shape with true and fair greens and fairways were cut nicely. The bunkers do need some work! There was no sand in them and they were more like dirt bunkers. The down side is that there was no sign of a marshall and the group in front of us was at least 3 holes behind after the front side and about 5 at the end. Also the cart gal needs some lessons in when to drive her niosy cart near players as they are trying to make a shot! Overall, it was a good experience and I will definitely play again.
nice course
I like the course with nice greens. that is most important to my book.
I'll give them four and half stars.
Great course
Great course plenty of difficult holes which can challenge u
It Used To Be Better...
This was the first time I've played this course in a year. I was very disappointed with the overall condition of the course. The bunkers are breaking down, they have little if any sand in them, the grassy edges of the bunkers are not being cut and portions of the greens are either burnt or there is no grass at all. It's obvious they are trying to save money by deferring maintenance but it is not nearly the course it used to be….too bad because I held this course in high regard.
Worth the drive
Staff was great, course was in good shape, and the price was reasonable. Don't go in the rough or you'll never find your ball. Only issue my group had was the guys in front of us that took FOREVER and were dressed like they just got out of the gym. We never saw a Marshall to have them speed up play.
I would definitely recommend this course to friends. I assume that I just got unlucky being behind the group we followed.
