San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

San Juan Oaks Golf Club Photo submitted by cjhsieh on 09/25/2012
course is tough layout
course was in good condition tea to green but was extremely windy and back nine is extremely difficult
even when not windy so it was very tough
Prepare for Steady and Strong Afternoon WInd
SJO is a tough golf course, especially in the afternoon when the winds pick up. The course provides a variety of challenges, yet good scores are possible if you avoid the thick rough. Back nine has nice changes in elevation. Plenty of wildlife can be seen...deer, hawks, etc.... just watch out for snakes! Plenty of restroom facilities and drinking water stations on the course/welcoming and friendly staff.
a little windy
The course was in great condition and very playable in the wind
Is this Heaven?
With the overall depressed state of the golf industry its a blessing and a shame that this course doesn't get more play. Thank you all for letting me pick off a time the night before and find this gem nearly deserted on a Sunday morning. The greens are perfect. Sans the lack of sand which has been an issue for years this course rates with the best of them. Most of my golf is a last minute arrangement but thankfully better players and great pairings make for an exceptional round here. I'm being selfish but encourage you all to patronize this facility so they can keep the lights on for me!
Great Course Great Day
A wonderful course just off Hwy 156 tucked in several small valleys.
Great layout where no hole seems the same.
Super views of the valley Great condition.
Pro style range, well stocked pro shop, and great lunch menu.
It's a challenging course
I had a great time, the course and weather was nice too as was the price ! I will definitely do it again!
Great Setting
A must play if in the area or no more than an hour drive. The issue was the bunkers that had not been maintained in a long time but they still seemed to play OK. The clubhouse food was very good and worth having lunch or dinner.
A tale of two nines
We played the back nine first and found that a difficult test. It was much tighter than the front, with very long rough on several holes just a step or two from the fairway. It was also very windy. When we got to the back (holes 1-9) either the wind had died or it is much more protected, and the fairways were wider and missing them wasn't nearly as penal. A fun course. Unfortunately the greens had been plugged a couple of weeks earlier and were still bumpy and relatively slow, thus a slight downgrade.
Challenging but fair
The staff was very accomodating. Our third wasn't sure if he could make it and they said not to worry, if he showed fine, if not start without him. The greens had been sanded, but they played fine. The course was in very good condition. It does get windy, especially in the afternoon, so the earlier, the better.
We walked so it took more than 3.5 hours, but no one in front most of the time and no pressure from the rear.
Perfect day of golf
Our foursome came from as far as 150 miles away to get together for a round of golf. As we haven't played San Juan Oaks in a while, it was like reuniting with an old friend. Enjoying each hole with its unique look and challenge. Can't wait to return for another event. Perfect weather and the course was in greet shape.
Not bad for my first time out here
Amazing value for the course layout although we drove an hour out of town to play here it was an incredible turn out the weather was amazing sunday and the greens had just been mowed. The staff was friendly and inviting from the pro shop all the way to the cart service girl made 3 rounds during my whole play which was good. Over all if ur looking for a good course at a great value San Juan oaks is ur place. Be carefull with hole #9 playit right!
Nice off the beaten track course.
This is a well maintained course with very nice facilities. The course is a little out of the way but that's the nice part. No houses anywhere . Very picturesque and a nice variety of holes and elevation changes. I definitely would play here again if I was in the area.
San Juan oks
the course was in good shape and a good challeng.Back 9 windy and differs in elevation.
San Juan Oaks!!!
The best $12 round ever with my friend Steve. Watch for Hot Deals, AMAZING!!!
Always good!
Huge driving range, Friendly staff, Good condition and Challenging! I love this place!
A Real Test
This place is a true test of your game. If you're looking for an "ego" course, stay away. But if you want to test yourself and use most of the clubs in your bag, SJO is for you.
Strategic layout
San Juan Oaks has open wide course with windy condition. One thing which makes me difficult is sticky rough. The height of the rough was long, but, now is much shorter. However, when I make iron or wood shot, sticky grass prevents from correct hitting.
Green is wide and fast.
2nd half has more up & down with crossing hazards.
The course was in great shape!
Recent fertilizing created very luscious and thick rough - tough to get out of. Greens and fairways were in great shape. Pace was good, hardly waited on group in front of us. Love the course!
Very well maintained
Fairways, greens the entire course was in very nice condition. It had rained the day before and you would not have known it. No problems at all. The natural terrain is woven into the holes to make for a beautiful, interesting and challenging course.
First time playing, a person could get lost trying to find the next tee.
For a senior the course is long, recommend seniors play the gold tees..............!
