San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

This is a great course
The fairways are in great condition. Greens are in good condition and can be challenging. I enjoy the layout, especially the back nine. Restaurant delivered some great food. Sometimes this place can be really slow play otherwise I would definitely recommend this course.
A really nice Fred Couples golf course; that should be played more than once.
Make your tee time through Golf now and get a great deal. This course is in a setting that is sure to please any golf aficionado. If you like to play your game away from houses and noisy roads, this will be your perfect setting for an outing. It is conveniently located between San Jose and Monterey off 101 near Hollister. I played here on a Sunday afternoon on my way back from a golf sabbatical around the Carmel area. I was thinking it would be crowded since it was a weekend and on prime time. Not at all, the price was exceptional and the pace of play moved rather quickly. One thing to note is the wind will make this course much harder and at times, it is a two to three club difference on most holes, especially 7, 8 and 9 when it is blowing 35 to 45 knots smack in your face.
So my disclaimer is; I’m not an expert on grass type, sand textures nor am I a scratch player. I won’t pretend to be, but I do play a lot of golf in different locations around the country. The way I see it; I owe it to other players like yourself and to the golf courses I’ve played at. I travel for pleasure and business, so I schlep my clubs with me on most occasions; it keeps me out of the bars and casinos. I really value the reviews you guy’s post and it helps me find the type of golf I’m looking for. I will get better at the reviewing as time goes on, so thanks for not holding my feet to the fire on specific details. Those will be left up to you to go find and figure out. So have fun and be courteous to those coming up behind you, fix divots and please pay attention to the pace of play, it is extremely important to keep on track. Time is short and there are lots of golf courses to be played, thanks.
Tee boxes: all were well maintained and with soft thick grass; the grass was clean of any weeds and the yardage placards were easy to locate. One thing I would have included nearby is a seed and dirt fill box for divot fixing.
Fairways: all were cut to proper length and most if not all cut dead grass was removed. Plenty of grass in the fairways and the second cut was not too punishing. The length was short enough but very sticky so you really needed to go steep if using any irons from here. The flow of the holes from tee to green was appealing to the eyes, with most holes you could locate the pin from the fairway no blind approaches.
Greens: each green was well maintained and no burned out spots to be found. Speed was medium to quick, and true. Lots of movement if you were far from the cup location; best to look at it from all sides before committing. The fringe was cut properly to length and you can putt just off the edge with success. Chipping was a challenge since the grass was sticky, chose your wedge wisely and grip pressure accordingly.
Sand Bunkers: for the most part very playable with deep sand like you would find at the beach. All were fairly placed on the fairway and around the greens.
Carts: new and quick, no GPS so you will have to bring your own or do it the old fashion way. Each was fitted with tees and towel for both players. We used the 90 degree rule that day.
It's an awesome setting
I play 2-3 times per month at various courses in Santa Clara County. San Juan Oaks is one of my favorite courses. The layout is beautiful and challenging. The course is well maintained. It can be pricey as are most of the good courses in this area. I watch for specials. San Juan Oaks is always at the top of my list when my buddies and I are planning an outing.
Thinking mans course
Good condition, good price from golfnow, reasonably quick play, definitely challengin from white tees.
Beautiful Course
I love San Juan Oaks. Beautifully maintained and challenging. Only thing I could pick on was the sand traps. They were hard as asphalt. Hopefully there will be new sand next time I play here.
Love the tranquil setting.
Probably my favorite course in the Monterey Bay Area. The setting is gorgeous. Although, afternoon winds can make it challenging.
What a great course!
While it was a little slow the day my friend and I played it was so enjoyable it didn't matter. This was the first time for both of us and the course was kept up so well and it's layout was really fun. Recommend highly!
Pace of play was gawd awful.
I had not played here in a few years and this round reminded me of why...
Pace of play was horribly slow.
Where were the marshalls to move play along?
A water cooler was empty and we didn't see a drink cart for 18 holes.
On the plus side, the food from the snack shack was very good and reasonably priced.
Course is in great shape.
People in club house very friendly. Starter girl was nice and helpful, as it was my first time there. Marshall was rude to us. He needs to go. Ruined the great impression that had been established by your other employees.
This is a Great Course to Play Challenging, one of my favorite courses to play
This is a Great Course to Play Challenging, one of my favorite courses to play. I was able to play in the last Fred Couples Golf Tournament and it was great met Fred and Teed off on #11 Par 5 and Fred's drive was so far that it was a #4 iron to the green.. You gotta play this course.

Tough course to play first time
Nice course with blind shots that can trick you if you only played it once long time ago. Course was in good condition. Wind made the play more challenging, but all in all a worthwhile experience.
YOU CAN PUTT IN PEACE !!
Nothing worse than a golf course built by an airport,freeway,etc..with background traffic noise, none of that here!! only the sound of a hawks wing cutting thru the air,or a deer walking nearby, so you can focus on the game.Golf in a setting (where i think ) it should be played!!
This course is fun to play
It has great variety and is very challenging. Greens are well maintained and they are fast.
Great track designed by Fred Couples, huge greens, can get windy in the afternoon, pay attention to the few forced lay-ups, a treat.
Great track by Fred Couples, huge greens with subtle breaks that are easy to over read, thick rough, can get windy in the afternoon, pay attention to the few forced lay-ups, fair but challenging and very enjoyable.
Challenging track in excellent condition
Beautiful and quiet golf course with gurgling streams, quiet ponds, plenty of wildlife and some really spectacular views. The rough was a little longer than I am used to and quite challenging - advantageous to keep it in the fairways at all times. Wish I lived closer so I could play it more often.
Very unusual experience.
Rough very high and strong winds led to a six hour round with no one else on the course. Base course in very good shape, grass immaculate. But no sand in the bunkers, rough very high, greens plugged and sanded made play slow & unsatisfactory. In the late afternoon, the wind died and the place feels like a small slice of heaven. So it was a long full day of contrasts.....
wonderful place
Fantastic experience playing the course. The views and location were really difference - playing up and down those valleys was very cool.
The course is challenging but fun.
We were informed of the aeration and sanding at check-in, but there was no discount offered.
Also, sand traps could use some more sand.
San Juan Oaks is a special golf course.
Beautiful setting in the hills around the area. No homes lining this course in a natural and challenging setting. you will want to come back here for a special round of golf.
Great course, long drive
Coming from the bay it's over an hour drive, but the course makes up for it. Great conditions, fun design, and no 5+ hour round like SF bay courses.
