Firecliff at Desert Willow Golf Resort
About
A lot of courses say they're all about nature. Desert Willow Firecliff Resort in Cathedral City actually lives it. Natural desert plants are the star of the show here. So much so that the course was featured on the front cover of Smithsonian magazine.
Bobcats, coyotes and desert rabbits have free run of the place, adding another dimension to any round. When you see a bobcat out in the distance of the desert brush, you're not chasing after that golf ball. No matter how much cash you plunked down for the latest in long-distance technology.
Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed Desert Willow and it offers a good example of how you become a rising name in the golf architect game. The sand sculpting demands attention from the first hole.
The course looks intimidating to play. With a 138 slope rating, it plays that way too.

A memory in the making
Superior course. Challenging but worth it.
Diniing marvelous.
Staff first rate.
Treat yourself
Driving range
Terrific course but seriously how do you shut down the driving range mid day for maintenance ?! They need to come up with a better plan.
Beautiful course
Course was in great shape. Beautiful scenery. Only negative is the game was over 4.5 hrs, the group in front very slow in the back 9 and no Marshall’s to be found to speed them up.
Great views, course is in fantastic shape, excellent patio for after golf refreshments!
Caution on playing time.
Lack of rangers can make for long rounds. Group of 6 guys joined for a 6some but what can u do. Do not play the course if they are having a local event. Also, be aware that it gets dark in a very big hurry.
Firecliff
Played the Purple tees (6676/72.1/136) with Jake, Tommy & Andy in around 4 1/2 hours. The weather was clear and breezy, around 80. Firecliff has a beautiful layout, well above average even by the high standards of the Palm Springs area.
The tees were mostly lush with even the par 3's fairly well maintained for divots.
The over seeded fairways were very lush. Firm with a decent amount of roll.
The over seeded rough was excellent to play out of. The ball sat up and even playing longer clubs was a viable option. Immaculate, very nice to chip out of.
The traps had thick sand that was very difficult to play from. Decently maintained, rarely do I comment that the sand is too thick and deep... but these were exactly that.
The greens were firm, smooth and quick. Few ball marks and good luck on numerous pins if above the hole.
The customer service was exceptional from all encountered. The drink cart was out making the rounds & complementary range balls are included with your round on a great practice facility. Really solid course, not tight off the tee but there is plenty of trouble to avoid as your approach the greens. Numerous lakes, large deep traps and desert scape lurking just off most fairways and around most greens is a lost ball waiting to happen. Numerous fairways appear tight from the tee vantage point. However, this is much more of a grip it & rip it course than 1st impressions would indicate. I find most of the fairways are generous in width once you get out over 175 yards from the Purple tees. One of my favorite courses in the Palm Springs area, highly recommend.
Good afternoon
Course is in good shape. Pace of play ok, not great but not overly slow. Landscaping is excellent. Each hole is attractive with views of the mountains, desert plants and flowers. A happy place to play golf.
Great value
Great course in great shape great deal on golf now
Not worth full fee
Excellent condition with some unique and varied hole layouts. Amenities are excellent. Practice and warm up facilities are very good, but they do seem to allow chipping practice on the practice putting green even though the chipping green is adjacent. Staff are efficient but not genuinely friendly, just well trained. 4 :40 hr round with considerable wait time and no Marshall all day. Beverage cart came by 30 minutes after last round announced via GPS unit which meant 3 1/2 hours into our round. However water stops are available at appropriate intervals.
I would never pay full fare here it’s just not that outstanding
Great Course
This course was in super shape when we played and while the greens weren’t lightning quick, they were decently fast and rolled very true, Course conditions were immaculate and service at the course was great. Would recommend this course over the Mountain View course as this course had a more interesting layout and hole variety. Would play this course again for sure.
All Around Great Golf
Wow, loved this course from its lush forgiving fairways to its secluded private layout. The customer service was impressive from bag drop to pro shop and got to meet the Head Professional Ryan who took the time to make my group feel welcome. Can’t say enough about how good this place is! It’s a must play if you’re in the Palm Springs area!
Immaculate!
Course was in amazing condition and loved the layout. Challenging but very fair and fun. Pace of play was only issue as course was packed. Bound to happen with such a busy track. Patio closed at 5:45 so no after round beers or food. Kind of a bummer.
Beware
If I had paid the rack rate for an out of area golfer I would have been very disappointed with the golfing conditions. While the course is beautifully laid out in pristine desert conditions with lush fairways and greens, it was very difficult to score on because there was very little roll on the fairways and the greens were slow.
This is a bargain for Palm Desert residents paying the local rate, but as visitor, I have played other courses in the area at an affordable rate but as well kept with friendlier fairways and better greens.
It seems like keeping the grass looking great
is more important than the golfing experience.
Slow
The round took over 5 hours to play. No rangers around to speed up play. Great course but I will not be back
Perfect Day & Great Golf Course
This was my first time at Firecliff. I was a bit late arriving because Google Maps could not find the course. They were very nice and valeted my car at no charge. They got me checked in and straight to the tee....all while being very helpful and nice.
The course conditions were excellent. Lush fairways, beautiful greens and an amazing mountain background. I had two minor complaints...the bunkers appeared not to have been tended to this morning, but they were still very nice. My second minor complaint was the green speed. I will start with the fact that I teed off at 7:00 AM, so there was a lot of moisture on the greens, but even after they dried out they were a bit slow. Having said that, they putted true and were in excellent condition.
All in all, this is a great golf course with amazing scenery, a great club house and amazing staff. I will play here every time I visit Palm Springs.
Excellent golf course
I really enjoyed this track. It’s a fair course with great views .
