Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
About
The highly popular El Campeon Course at Mission Inn Resort consistently ranks in the top 10 of Florida's many golf courses. The course originally opened in 1917 and decades later in 1992, it was joined by a second 18-hole course, Las Colinas. El Campeon is not only one of the state's oldest golf courses but also one of its most challenging. The traditional design remains largely unchanged except for a renovation in 1926. The course winds through towering forests and numerous spring-fed lakes. The layout features water on thirteen holes as well as dramatic elevation changes that measure over 85 feet across the rolling fairways and undulating greens. The signature hole of the golf course is the par-5 17th. This lengthy double dogleg possesses more hazards than some entire courses do.

El Campeon is FANTASTIC and FUN
Course is in wonderful shape. The greens are fast and true. A really tough layout, but SO MUCH FUN. Shot a 42 on the front then blew it on the 16,17, 18 for a 92. I will go back and conquer the Devils Delight.
Fantastic.
I played this most recently on a very strange day -- as the world started shutting down for the pandemic. All kinds times available at a bargain price because a college tournament had cancelled.
The course was in immaculate shape. The greens were pristine. The weather was ideal. And I shot even par from the blues on the back (I'm currently a 10-handicap).
But I've played here for more money (and not scored as well) and I love it. SO unusual for Florida. Lots of elevation change. All kinds of trouble. Really challenging.
It is far from downtown Orlando and the parks, but if you are on the West or Northwest side it helps. And if you are there for a golf vacation, the other course is strong as well. So it's good for a golf/tennis/spa stay and play, but you aren't close to much other activity off-property.
Top Notch
Mission Inn never fails, setup was supreme and demanding. It was worth the drive time to play this magnificent tract!
excellent golf course
Absolutely EL Campeon is among the best in Central Florida.
Greens were fast and fairways were in great condition. Landscaping and flowers were so nice. Try it...you'll like it!
Never Again
I played this course with some friends yesterday - we had been rained out a few days before and got a rain check for 9 holes. I have been playing golf for over 40 years throughout the world - in rain, snow, wind and worse. I now have had my least enjoyable round of golf - ever. The pace of play was excruciating. It took almost 5 1/2 hours to finish. I myself stopped playing after about 12 holes, it was just not fun anymore. My friends persevered. We had called for a ranger and one was promised - no one came. It’s not that bad a course but there is clearly a management problem or they just don’t care about paying customers. Avoid.
Slowest round ever
How does 6 hours sound to play on a so called resort course? We played on Sunday at 12.28pm and finished at 6.15pm. Most times, 3 groups waiting to tee off - called the pro shop after 4 hours holes - never saw the ranger come out and try and speed up - even worse, Canadian Q school was going to have a tournament and a lot of their players turned up to play - some with coaches and caddies and took 3 shots off the tee, bunkers, greens. No one from Mission management did anything. After round was over, wanted to talk to pro shop, but closed!
So beware if you want to play there, because they overbook the course, let players do what they ant and not care. A lot of choices around Orlando and this is not one.
Thank you for taking time to review El Campeon. This was an extremely busy day for Mission Inn with Q-school practice rounds creating pace of play issues. Players were advised of our one ball, one shot policy, but sadly not all followed it.
Great Course Bad Rain Policy
I treated my Canadian golf buddies to El Campeon but the day was spoiled after 5 holes by a huge rainfall. We expected to get an 18 hole rain check would were only offered a low percentage of our green fee. Very disappointing! What we saw of the course was impressive. I'm not sure at this point that we will be back.
Great Layout .....PAINFULLY SLOW PLAY.
Great course and layout but we never saw a ranger all day. Pace of play was totally inexcusable. Waited all day on every shot. Some tee shots we sat on tee 20 minutes waiting for groups ahead to tee off. To drive all that way and then play at that pace.....never again.
Great course and value
The mature well designed course was matched by its good condition. The best course and the best value I’ve found. It is a 45 minute drive from our condo but Worley’s the trip. .
Brilliant Course
Played here once again and the course in superb condition. All the staff very friendly will always return. Just wish the pace of play would have been quicker took nearly 5 hours.
Strict adherence to stupid policies leaves a bad taste
GA professes to have its value in honest reviews so here goes...
I absolutely love the golf course, but on my second time playing I had a less than pleasant experience that should be addressed in this forum. After all, reviews on GA are encouraged by the (too) many signs all over the pro shop. Resorts and semi private clubs invite the otherwise non affiliated public to play their courses to generate revenue to subsidize the membership fee and to encourage golfers to come back and stay at the resort to pay for the full priced experience. I get it that golf courses that limit their access to discount players have policies about that.
I showed up well in advance of my tee time. I was informed that not only that I couldn’t tee off earlier, I COULD NOT EVEN CHECK IN UNTIL A HALF HOUR BEFORE TEEOFF. But I was welcome to plunk down $8 for a small bucket, unlike the other high end resort that I played the day before that had unlimited (and in pristine condition) balls at the range. Or spend resort prices for some breakfast at the restaurant. Or putt on the practice greens that had so much sand that my ball had a stripe of sand adhered to it on a four foot practice putt.
And they weren’t busy when I got there. The started wanted to put me out but couldn’t until I checked in, which I was denied to do. But they sure were busy when the discounted GN play began. The starter was frustrated and sympathetic. But when the pro shop attendant went to the office to talk to his boss (the pro I assume) he didn’t even bother to come out to talk to me. In a game that is about etiquette and character, well...
And when I asked what the perks were that were advertised on GN, nobody in the pro shop seemed to have a clue, until when pressed, they informed me that it was a deal “on the resort side” like it was a different planet.
The course itself is wonderful, even though I left 4 putts hanging on the edge, prevented from dropping by the accumulation of sand on the greens.
I was definitely going to come back and stay at the resort with my wife and pay good money to do so. It’s a very nice resort. But after this experience I am going to think long and hard about doing that when there is plenty of competition out there.
Strict adherence to stupid policies leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Get some flexibility guys. It will earn you repeat customers, which is the whole point. Just because it’s an outstanding, historic course doesn’t mean that you will earn loyalty.
Sanded greens
We've played this course several times in great conditions. Today was different. They should have told us that the greens were sanded. We've never seen the greens at Mission Inn, both courses, as slow as they were today.
Again, GolfNow should have advised us about the greens.
Correct me if I'm wrong, maybe I missed something :)
inconsistent greens
Course was in very good condition except for the greens.
Greens were not nearly as lush as the practice greens and sometimes they were moderately fast and sometimes pretty sluggish. Waiting was only a problem for the last 4 holes when the layout caused problems for the foursome in front of us. Overall, a very nice outing. I'd do it again! You probably won't do as well as you do on your local course but that's a testimony to the challenging nature of El Campeon.
Great track
Great track, fast smooth greens. Room for the big shots, but also the need for strategy and set up for your next. On my list to play again.
Slow Play
My friend and I went out as a twosome.
There was a foursome ahead of us where only three were playing golf.
The other gentleman decided he was going to ball hawk all day with a ball retriever in ALL the water hazards.
Unbelievably slow and should not be allowed to do such a thing.
My partner who was vacationing from RI could not believe what was going on. He stated it was the worst golf experience of his life .
Great course, SLOOOOOOW play.
It would have been a 5 star but I can't ignore the pace of play and NO rangers to assist.
The course is in great shape and will challenge you, the fairways are green, greens are nice but slow.
Very hard to maintain your focus as we were waiting on every shot we took (no exaggeration), over 5hrs for the round.
SLOW PLAY
No Ranger, just a starter.
If you like sitting in a golf cart, today was for you!
Round took 5 hours and it was 10 minute between shots. You get to see lousy golfers studying puts for 9 and you'll have people behind you standing with hands on their hips.
The course is all about money, that's why pace was horrendous! Get some rangers out there and push some of the 20+ handicaps literally STRUGGLING ON SUCH A DIFFICULT GOLF COURSE....it really sucked out there today. Go somewhere else for a lot less and enjoy your round. DONT PAY BIG MONEY FOR AGGRAVATION!
Slowest greens I have ever seen, I've played on fairways faster than your greens
This is a reply to the Management comment to my original review:
1. Did you advise us it would be slow - NO
2. The first official day of Q School practice was the following day. You just allowed them to go out - no consideration for other customers. Did they pay - NO
3. Was there a course ranger - NO. So you allowed these guys to go out with caddies, trainers, even girlfriends and didn’t police their dropping balls in bunkers;
taking practice putts etc.
4. Would we get our money back? NO - go on prove me wrong! (Booked under Maguire)
Thanks for taking time to comment. El Campeon was very busy with Q-school practice rounds on this day. Our policy for them was play one ball ONLY. Sadly, not all players followed it.
