The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Nice course
In spite of the sanded greens we had a beautiful round. Hardly any people. Very friendly staff.
Hilton head trip
First time to play this course after coming to Hilton Head for years. The course layout was great. Not a much water and sand traps as other courses in the area. Made the experience more enjoyable.
Good Course
Course was in very good shape. There is nothing extremely exceptional about this course but it is very nice. The pace of play was very good and the staff treat you well. Would recommend esp. if you can get a good deal.
A average place to play
The course was dry and cluttered. Given the hurricanes extensive damage to the entire area, all courses are suffering so I believe all should be given an out, however, this course was the worst shape of the five we have played.
Great course to play while on the island. Staff were very friendly. I played with no one before or after me so pace was fantastic. Greens were well taken care of, with great pin locations that were challenging but not unfair.
Picture perfect day in HHH
We enjoyed the course which is in good condition, some burnout on fairways but greens are excellent and fast.
The sand traps really need some work, difficult to get your club through the ball.
Staff was very friendly and accommodating . We would definitely recommend this course .
Good layout ... fairways a little rough but playable...green could be faster but in good condition.
Well designed track
Albeit a tad dry, this track was an enjoyable experience with one of the best finishing holes in H.H. A fantastic lay out and a more 'out there' experience than most golf community designs. The greens were hard and fast and rolling true. Another Arther Hills design that I strongly recommend.
Good coursr
Nice course, good conditions. Great service, best value on the island.
Course was in bad shape
Course was extremely dry and fairways an d tee boxes were in bad shape. Did not pick up any grass clippings and they were all dried up all over the course
Alwas a challenge
Course in ok condition but that is true all over this yr due to the hurricane. Our cart was good but the person with us had a poor and noisy cart.
We apologize for the cart. We are slated to have brand new group of carts within the week! We hope you all will come back and join us as we continue to improve our courses and catch up from the Hurricane Matthew setback.
