Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

This course has management issues!
Deja vu all over again. Arrived an hour before tee time to hit a few balls and chip and putt. One person at bag drop was swamped by multiple arriving players. Swamped for two obvious reasons. He was shorthanded and there were no carts available. The driving range and chipping/putting areas are about 300 hundred yards apart. Without a cart it is difficult to use these facilities. I queried the bagboy as to how I could use the range and putting green. Knowing that I need my bag/clubs and also realizing that I might not get a cart if I'm not present. He assured me he would bring my bag to the range. Fourty minutes passed, no cart. So I walked to the first tee hoping to secure my tee time. After waiting another 30 minutes the cart appeared. Tee times were obviously backed up so the starter suggested we could play the other course, which was open. My partner accepted and we finally teed it up and were off. I noticed the starter changed the scorecard, but on the 2nd hole discovered it was the wrong one! No big deal except there are no hole diagrams on tee markers and we are unfamiliar with this course. Then you add insult to injury with slow play. This is really frustrating to recount. I play to enjoy! This experience suggests that management is either clueless or incompetent. I commented to the person in golf shop that shortage of carts occurred the last time. He was somewhat defensive in responding that they had a hundred carts, but they had 150 guests. Apparently it was too big a day. They might try to make the case that hurricane damage was the reason for their issues, but that would apply to all of HHI's courses. I won't return.
Cupp course is better
Have played both the Cupp and Hills course in past 2 weeks, and the Cupp course is in better shape. Appears that Hills course received much more Hurricane damage that Cupp. Hills layout is nice with some challenging par 4s from the whites over 400 yards. Fairways are a little hard packed and some tee boxes have little to no grass. 18th is an extremely challenging hole. Good day overall to play February golf.
Fun course
First time playing this course. Nice layout. Good condition for this time of year.
Sleeping giant
The layout is championship class, however the surroundings , paths and tees , are a little tired to say the least. The greens on the back 9 are far superior to the front nine, not sure if they have been relaid but they were excellent and fast and true. No starter and we weren't aware, despite going to the pro shop, until another player playing Cupp course told us; we weren't sure if we had been paired up or not. We were a two ball and we flew round in around 3 hours 20. My overall impression was this could or just has been a great course. Loved the narrow landing areas from the drive and the water added an interesting element. Overall a very enjoyable round of golf and would play here again
Great place to play
Really enjoyed it. Not lush green at this time of year. But fairways and greens played Great! Enjoyed and and will likely come back.
Great for Value
Normally course goes for 60 a round and we got it for 20. Can't beat that on the island. Two courses based out of Palmetto Hall can't go wrong with either. Greens are very tough along with rough around the greens so hit on with your irons to score low. Loved the course wish they had food around the turn, clubhouse is literally a desk and bathroom with some apparel. All in all can't beat it for 20 bucks.
Arthur Hills At Palmetto Hall
Bring you long balls as you will need it from the blues. Excellent course and layout. Very challenging for me, a 9 handicap. I am not a long ball hitter which put pressure on my short game. I would go back in a heartbeat.
nice layout
Enjoyed the experience, found it to be great value for money spent. Will definitely play it again
enjoed our round
went as a twosome. they hooked us up with a third and it worked out.
Great Course
Fairways were a little tight. Plenty of water. Golf staff very friendly. course in great shape. Will play again.
winter in hhi
i hand not played this course in several years and i was extremely pleased. a mix of straight forward holes, with some that require fore thought, i was told that the greens had been redone, and they rolled fast and smooth. first hole is #1handicap 18th hole is #2. tough way to start and finish.
Great course
First time playing on either of the two Palmetto Hall courses. This in "winter" golf but the course was in excellent condition. I had played two other courses in the days before and this was much better. The greens were erythromycin fast, but smooth and true. These greens have lots of undulations thus if you were above the hole, forget it!. Lots of character, many different holes styles and lots of green side bunkers and modules. Great challenge
Thank you for playing with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed your round and look forward to having you back with us in the future!
