Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

The shot-maker's course
The Hills course demands more proper ball-striking than its sister Cupp course, which makes it play tougher for most amateur golfers. Plenty of doglegs, bunkers, a mix of water hazards and narrow, difficult entry points into greens that require shots through the air add up to a stout series of challenges. If you're playing from the whites (which I did on both courses), the Hills plays 200+ yards longer, so even distance is an issue. Don't let this review scary you away. It's a nice course. Just be prepared to play well or pay the price on the scorecard.
Great Course, friendly courteous staff!
Courteous staff from bag drop, check-in and starter!!! Even the cart girl was friendly and helpful. I played the Hills course! Layout is great! You will use all your clubs!!! Although the greens were micro-pinned they rolled true and fast! My approach shots held the greens. Definitely on my short list for the HH/Bluffton are golf play!
Great Course, Wrong Time
We were very excited to play here! Checking in was easy and the staff was good. The staff at check in were very nice but failed to inform us that everyone was starting on the 10th hole. So we went to the first hole and the starter told us to go to the 10th hole. A bit inconvenient. The worst thing is that they were actually aerating the greens. No one informed us of this activity prior to checking us in. I would have played elsewhere if known. I’ll try again in the future but it was my wife’s birthday and I felt shortchanged.
Enjoyable Layout and Friendly Staff
My son and I had a fun time playing at Palmetto Hall. The staff was friendly and the course layout was scenic and open. Greens were recently aerated, but still ran fast.
Hilton Head
Beautiful course. A bit slow on the back 9 but I was a single so very understandable. I had close encounter with a couple of alligators near a pond. I was surprised there was no signage.
Trees need work
I have been goin there for about 30 years. I even owned property there that I never developed..The tree overhanging th fairways and tees were infuriating. Nowhere on the tee box could you shoot for the pin on a few of th par 3s. Many times th res blocked a shot to the fairway from the tee box. For that price I expect challenging but playable. Also, no ball washers.
Course was not in the condition that price demands.
Greens were furry and slow, fairways were shaggy with way to many un repaired pivots and to boot pace was 5.5 hours.
Arthur Hills course -palmetto
Beautiful course. Staff were helpful throughout. Nice and relaxing, the way golf was meant to be played!
Good course - slow pace of play
My husband and I played the Hills course. Excited to play it however we were stuck behind a teaching pro and two older beginner ladies. We watched them hack it around for nine holes. The started was of no help and knew who was in front of us. He also mentioned that they had 330 rounds that day so why would you put a lesson on the course on a very busy day at 1:00 pm? We were a GolfNow hot deal so maybe that is the reason why we got what we got but we will have to think twice if we decide to play there again. The course was in decent shape. The area has had very dry conditions and the layout was good. Greens were in good shape too. Overall I liked the course but wish we had a better experience.
Service Issues During Heritage Tournament Week?
- nobody at bag drop upon arrival so I found my own cart
- driving range closed at noon for mowing
- no clear direction given for the first tee or practice green
- food/bev cart disappeared after 1pm
- trash cans on tees overflowing
- player assistant and starter couldn't have been less interested
Green fee: $144
Good course
Overall would recommend to others - course was in good condition, staff was super friendly. The greens were a bit lacking - good physical condition, but it almost seemed that every green rolled differently. Some were fast, some were slow - our entire group could not get a consistent pace of the greens. Fairways were a bit tight, but very scenic course and worth playing.
Save your money
Disappointed to say the least. $170 for one of the slowest greens I’ve ever played. Conditions around the green were brutal - if you miss the green, good luck hitting out of dirt and mud. Pace of play was horrendous. Ranger came out and told us to expect about a 5 hour round. There was 4 groups on the same hole. Club house was nice and staff was great. If you’re looking for hospitality, this is the place! If you’re looking for a course worth $170, stay clear.
Great layout
Very friendly staff, excellent course conditions from tee to green.
Mixed Experience
The course is a good shape and the greens were slow, but smooth. The back side is much more interesting, as there are not a redundancy of water hazards. On course policing of pace was non-existent, even though Player Assistance were sitting idol in their carts.
Like almost all the Heritage Collection properties on the island, it’s well overpriced.
Great Course
Challenging but fun to play. Some holes demand exact shots while others are somewhat forgiving.
