Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Great layout
Very friendly staff, excellent course conditions from tee to green.
Mixed Experience
The course is a good shape and the greens were slow, but smooth. The back side is much more interesting, as there are not a redundancy of water hazards. On course policing of pace was non-existent, even though Player Assistance were sitting idol in their carts.
Like almost all the Heritage Collection properties on the island, it’s well overpriced.
Great Course
Challenging but fun to play. Some holes demand exact shots while others are somewhat forgiving.
Fun course
Such a great course for the value. For the area, I highly recommend
You will enjoy this course.
Course in excellent shape especially for early February. Liked the layout. Course personnel very friendly which is not always true at resort play courses. Greens very nice. Best course I’ve played in Hilton Head.
Challenging and Beautiful Course
First time playing course and wasn’t disappointed. The course is laid out with plenty opportunities to challenge your club management and shot-making skills.
The greens and fairways are in good shape and consistent rolls with bunkers receiving good maintenance.
The cart paths are reasonable condition but need to pay attention because of broken surfaces.
Checking in was easy and courteous with post round drinks very reasonably priced.
We’ll return again next year for our annual Golfcation!
The shot-maker's course
The Hills course demands more proper ball-striking than its sister Cupp course, which makes it play tougher for most amateur golfers. Plenty of doglegs, bunkers, a mix of water hazards and narrow, difficult entry points into greens that require shots through the air add up to a stout series of challenges. If you're playing from the whites (which I did on both courses), the Hills plays 200+ yards longer, so even distance is an issue. Don't let this review scary you away. It's a nice course. Just be prepared to play well or pay the price on the scorecard.
Good layout
The course is in good conditions. It is a playable layout that is fairly forgiving yet has enough challenge to keep you on your game. The green are in good shape and run true. They are slower than I prefer but not bad. The people there were very nice and helpful. The range was mats only.
Good shape, friendly staff
Be sure to recognize there are 2 Arthur Hills golf courses on HHI - 1 in Palmetto Dunes and this one in Palmetto Hall. I like others (I learned) went to wrong course initially (sigh).
Hills course in good shape. Greens little slow for my liking but smooth. Staff friendly. Would play again.
Great course. Great staff.
Course was in very good shape for the end of the heavy play season. Staff was wonderful. Very friendly, very helpful. Great design. Would play again.
