Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
About
The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.
Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.
From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Barony course Photo submitted by JIMMYLAW77 on 01/10/2018
Meehh
The Pro Shop was not warm and friendly.
The course itself was not well cared for. Pretty shabby, in fact.
For the price demanded, we weren’t impressed and don’t think I will go back
Two thumbs up
Had a terrible day personally, but what a great layout. Greens were well maintained. Staff very courteous. I’d like to play this course on a day I could actually strike the ball properly.
Poorly Maintained
Course was fairly wide open and set up was good, but the course itself was in bad shape. Grass on the fairways and greens were hit or miss with patches throughout. Greens appeared to have been mowed, but they missed parts and the greens were extremely inconsistent. For over $100, they should issue refunds.
Not worth the money
The staff were very friendly from the pro shop to the bag guys. But when your charging $100+, the greens have to be playable. These may be the worst greens for a course this price we have ever played. The majority of the tee boxes were also uncut. Just very unkept all the way around. Last but not least was the pace of play. Our tee time was 1:08. We didn’t tee off until 1:25 and were treated to a 5+ hour round. We did not see a single ranger on the course often waiting 15 minutes in between shots. Again, for $50, ok, but for what we paid, unacceptable.
Very average player friendly Challenging, but not incredibly difficult
The hole tee locations were well done.
Easy to navigate.
I truly enjoyed myself
Diisappointing
Right from the Pro Shop appearing disinterested in our patronage, to the very poorly maintained course, this was a disappointment and not worth the money charged.
Fix the broken cart paths. Maintain the tee boxes and grow some smooth greens.
Do y’all ever play at a nice course? I have seen muni’s in better shape than this.
Best Customer Service EVER!!!
I'm not a big golf course reviewer, However, the mixed reviews I saw on GolfNow and the extremely positive experience I/We had at Port Royal; I had to tell. I've never experienced a friendlier shop staff than I encountered at Port Royal, The head pro came out from behind the counter to welcome us and make us feel welcome. Another staff member volunteered a couple of local places to have dinner that night which turned out to be an outstanding find! What appeared to be primarily a members club, they went out of their way to make us visitors feel welcome and appreciated.
Both courses play from the same clubhouse, which has a little bit of an awkward start as the first tee for both courses is kind of distant from the clubhouse and starter. However, they used this to great advantage staggering people over to the respective 1st tee as appropriate. When we arrived at the first tee we were surprised that there was a second set of starters again, who's primary mission was to ensure that we got off to a good start. These were the best marshaled courses I've encountered in a long time. We were in position all day playing both eighteens in about 4 hours, however, they were visible and always with a question "how's it going" "having a good time",
This was February, and while we had fantastic weather, cold starts but shirt sleeves by the end of the day. The course conditions were average/normal for this time of year. Greens were thin but rolled very well. Fairways were also very thin as Bermuda doesn't grow in the winter. No overseeding except tee areas, however, I'm not a huge fan of overseeding as it makes the spring transition very tricky and you could tell these courses were all about the spring with pre-emergent already evident on the fairways. All in all VERY enjoyable couple of 36 hole days at Port Royal, Definitely will be in our Winter Golf Trip to SC rotation.
A little bit off in a couple of ways.
I made a tee time about a month in advance directly from the Port Royal website and specifically chose the Robbers Row course for a 9:40 tee time. More on this later. The staff was great. Had a very friendly guy meet me at the bag drop and he took my clubs to the staging area while I checked in. Pro shop guy was very nice and actually got me a better rate than what I signed up for. They give you a warm up bag of 25 balls which was nice. At the range the hitting line was up so far that a significant part of it was actually on a downslope. That was awkward. Putting green was huge and had lots of targets. When I get to the first tee I find out that the members mens group have the tee at Robbers Row on Thursdays until 11 so I’m going to play the Barony course. That was quite disturbing, but maybe that’s why I got a better rate. Pro shop guy didn’t tell me this.
The Barony course was nicely laid out. No really hidden trouble and only one hole that was kind of weird (a short par 4 with a true 90- degree turn in it).
All in all ok. But I didn’t appreciate the switch.
