Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
About
The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.
Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.
From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Barony course Photo submitted by JIMMYLAW77 on 01/10/2018
Good value for the money
Overall the course was pretty good. The greens were a bit bumpy, but the ball still rolled decently. . The fairways were in great shape, no bad lies.
Golf Can Be a Beach
Barony is one of two courses at Port Royal operating out of same clubhouse. Classic Low Country layout with lush fairways, lot of bunkering, greenery all arounnd, and wetness. Layout was fun and we motored around pretty well on a soggy, blustery day. Many greens are small and surrounded by bunkers. Bunkers are also low country typical: wet sand/dirt mix. Adjust accordingly. Staff was great; very friendly.
Major downside was the greens had been aerated three weeks ago (per another review) and hadn't recovered. No one made a putt all day; hard to get a read or a roll.
Quibble: The front nine does not return to the clubhouse (or near it) and we didn't see the drink cart after the 5th hole.
Would play again.
Great course!!
We had a tee time today for three, and short of the people behind us, we didn’t see anyone other than the course staff.
The course is well laid out, several holes allow you to bomb away at the fairways, while the others encourage a well played and placed shot.
Greens were recently punched and the back 9 seems to be a little worse than the front. This was minimal and wouldn’t prevent me from playing again.
Excellent course and Staff
Beautiful course with very small tight greens. The staff couldn’t be more friendly.
Greens and Tee off areas extremely poor. Fairways excellent, course set up excellent.
Barony
Played 10+ days after aeration of greens. Was fine. Very forgiving fairways. Couple holes where you don’t know water comes into play. Worth it for golf now discount but overpriced at normal rates.
July Holiday
Greens were aerated recently so not awesome. Rest of the course was in great shape.
Excellent course
Great overall course. The greens were recently punched but the speed was okay. Excellent service from staff members. The layout of the course is awesome. I would definitely recommend to play there.
Yinzer in the Low Country
Excellent course for the money. Not crowded and course was in good shape. Would play again.
Fantastic course on Hilton Head
This was our third and final course on our vacation and it was an amazing time and the staff were extremely nice and the play was perfect. We felt like we were there by ourselves is the pace of play it was perfect.
Slow play and aerated greens
Unfortunately I chose a day when the greens had been recently aerated. Otherwise the course was a good challenge. Also played behind a family who probably should have chosen a par 3 course or one that was easier. The pace was terrible but did have the good fortune to meet and play with a resident member who was a great guy and good golfer. This made the round somewhat enjoyable.
Great layout
We were behind a tournament so pace was so slow even though they did have a Marshall riding around. The layout is a challenge but fair to most average players. The greens were recovering from aeration so they were bumpy and inconsistent. Overall a good experience because the staff was very friendly and the tee to green play was excellent.
Best I have ever seen it
I have been playing Barony for 35 years and it never disappoints. They had just aireated the greens so that was the only downgrade. It is a great test of golf from any tees. I shot near my handicap despite the greens.
