Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.

The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,

The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Drill Sergeant Gary

The ranger at this course has one terrible attitude. This was my second time playing this course this week. My first time visiting this course was on Tuesday Nov 5th. On Tuesday this ranger Gary comes up to my mother and I and told us to pick up and skip 2 holes for the pace of play. He was a broken record and had no remorse ruining our round. The players behind us were not even close to catching up to us and even the other starter agreed when we finished hole 9 that this was unecessary action. On Thurssay I played by myself with a few friends and while I was waiting for my tee time, I noticed the practice green had closed that morning at 11am for overseeding. I arrived at 10 am to hit the range and no one announced of the closing. So I made a complaint to Gary asking why no one mentioned it would closed within the time i had to spare that morning. His attitude was "not my problem." And "nothing I can do about it so whats your problem!?" His attitude stunk of aggression and put a feeling in my gut like he wanted to fight. He talked down to me like i was a new recruit in bootcamp and I am disgusted by his demenor. I had an amazing time with my friends on this gorgeous course, but I will make sure to consider whether or not this guy is scheduled to work the next day I choose to play Oysters Reef.

Pricey but good

Good layout. Fast greens. Practice range. Nice clubhouse. Golfnow Hot Deal was still the most expensive course we played by far.

Nice course, good layout, slow POP, bring a range finder.

Course has a good layout and was in good condition, especially the greens. Old South has more character and better views. Golden Bear is as good with better value. Better layout than Hilton Head National. Palmetto Dunes courses were in better condition on this trip. POP was 4:45. Biggest negative for first time golfers is no information about each hole. No GPS, diagram or illustration to give you an idea of any bunkers or hazards. Just a basic scorecard. When we brought this up to the Pro after our round, he said it was ridiculous to expect GPS or a depiction of each hole. He wasn’t understanding or friendly. We are planning another trip to the island, but will avoid this course. If you play there be sure to have a range finder. Enjoy.

Wonderful. Had a great time but they were very busy hosting practice rounds for the AMTour. 5 hour round into dark.

Great course but…

Great course with a layout that was fun and challenging to play. Staff was great as we were greeted in the parking lot for bag drop. Starter was informative and told us about the course since it was our first time playing there. Only complaint would be the cart girl that was never seen. We had gotten great service in the club house before heading out and again at the turn but it would have been nice for the cart girl to have been by atleast once during our 18 holes. We mentioned it as we came off the course and was told that it was a known problem. Told the pro shop also as we were buying some items and again told it’s a known problem but she works for the restaurant not the course. Sad that they aren’t doing something to correct a known issue that the entire staff seemed to be aware of. But it’s a nice course just make sure you buy a water or beer before you heard out to play especially in the warm weather.

Challenging course, but bring a range finder.

Played for the first time in October, 2024. Beautiful course with lots of trees and ponds surrounded by nice homes in a quiet neighborhood. Course layout is very good, challenging, yet fair. Overall conditions were so-so. Tee blocks were raggedy and fairways needed mowing. We played in the morning, so maybe they mowed them later. Bunkers were well maintained with consistent sand. Best part of the course are the greens. They are smooth, undulating and challenging.

POP was so-so, 4:45. Like us, the group in front of us was there for the first time. The carts don’t have GPS and the score card doesn’t have a map of the course or diagram of each hole. It’s time consuming and confusing figuring out hazards and distances on each hole. A range finder is almost a must. After our round, a member of the group in front or us mentioned the issue to the Pro. He pretty much ignored them. Was border line rude.

Enjoy the course, but bring a range finder to speed up your round.
