Oyster Reef Golf Course
About
Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.
The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,
The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Almost perfecr
Everyone was great but stuck behind a slow group and could have used some help from a marahall.
Greens had just been aerated and top coated with sand. Which explained the reduced greens fees. It wasn’t really advertised that this was the case. But otherwise, a nice course, fair layout and enjoyable round. Slow on the front and teed off late, which was weird for a morning tee time??? Pace was better on the back.
Ask about green aeration
Greens were aerated a few days before and I was unaware so that was a bummer. They were really rough so it is tough to give a great rating because greens are so important. I can only assume they are great the rest of the season. Course layout was beautiful, fairways and bunkers were well maintained. Range balls are included so that was great! Starter was not very friendly and staff in general was not friendly and was pretty sparse. No one was around after the round to clean clubs or help with anything and we finished at 3:45 when the course was still active. The guy at the pro shop was the only one that seemed to appreciate our business. If you can get a discounted rate, it would be worth a try, but be sure to check aeration schedule.
Rookie run
We appreciated the course and it’s challenges. The sarcastic starter was a bit abrupt even though we were on time. Sorry we were any earlier.
The course flows very well and was in excellent shape despite the recent aeration however we understand it needs to be done.
We will return and recommend to friends.
Thank you for the feedback and review, we hope to see you again in the future.
Thank you for the review.
Boring course
This course is nothing but dogleg left and right. There is nothing nice about this course. It is a very dull course to play. I will not play this course twice.
Felt rushed
Played in under 4 hours and were told three times to speed it up. Two hole gap between us and the group following
Oyster Reef late July 2022
It was supposed to rain and the forecast changed last minute, so we teed off early and had the course almost to ourselves. Nice course, a lot of doglegs, greens were nice, but green speed seemed to vary a little bit. Overall great experience.
Unable to play, turned away by security at gate
Unfortunately, we were unable to play our round due to issues at the security gate. The security guard would not allow us to enter due to being in an oversized vehicle despite confirming it was ok when booking the tee time. On the morning of the tee time we were again given Ok by pro shop staff but security would not let us enter. We played 4 rounds on the island at other courses with no issues.
Rangers
Constantly were followed by even though we played in 4 hours. The group behind us was two holes back. Got really old ….
Nice people working at oyster reef
Eveeyone at the course was very nice, in the pro shop, starter, cart help and cart girl all 5 stars. Layout very good for me with enough trouble to make you think but not so much that it wears you down. We were unfortunately stuck behind a couple of groups that each had a non golfer trying to play, and those playing with them were being exceedingly patient and possibly giving a very painful and ultimately futile playing lesson. Pace was 5 hours and the bad part of that is i played an afternoon time to avoid the morning crowds. I know it is tricky to have the marshall enforce pace and end up getting nasty internet reviews. Take heart, all golf courses everywhere, those of us that can play at your recommended pace know who are writing those reviews and we’d be fine if those guys don’t show up next time.
Course was in great shape for the exception of some of the greens on the greens.on the front 9. Par 3 hole overlooking the bay is an awesome hole
Excellent for beginners and low hanicappers
Fairways and greens were in great shape. Not too many fairway side-canals, which can be frustrating. Traps were mostly good sand, not hard packed.
Thank you for the candid review and we do apologize that the aeration had not been communicated to you during booking. We hope to see you again.
