Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Couple Issues - Great Greens
Played the course yesterday for the first time ever. We were ready in advance of our tee time and had plenty of time to talk with the starter. He was a nice guy, but we specifically asked if there was anything we should know as first time visitors....’no, just have fun’’. There are many tough and hidden tee shots where some local knowledge is required. We suggested after the round that a course like this would benefit by giving first time players a guide book...or GPS on carts would be recommended. The other big issue is that zero of the bunkers were groomed and the sand was packed hard. Balls landing in bunkers rolled...literally rolled and mostly ended up at the edge/collar before stopping. And, it had not rained at all in the 4-5 days prior to us playing. Great greens and nice fairways. The couple things that made this experience less enjoyable are easily fixable if the course wants more out of town visitors/players.
Hidden Gem
Don’t play here if you can’t hit the ball consistently well off the tee, as you won’t enjoy it, it is a seriously tough
golf course with a superb back nine. Single figure golfers will get the most enjoyment from this track, great
layout with superb green complexes., and in fine condition. If you do play as high handicapper take plenty of balls
with you.
Nice golf course
Everything would have been great if they would have watch the pace on the golf course. I would understand if it would have been packed but with only few groups in front... not ok to go over 4.5 hrs. Other than that it was great. Great conditions, nice people and great layout with few difficult holes long carry and narrow greens.... super!!!
Tough but a great challenge
Played a mixed better ball match with friends and we all found the first few holes pretty tough but once we started playing better golf we very much enjoyed the challenge of this very good golf course. We are all reasonable club golfers between 14 & 20 handicaps and would suggest higher handicappers should leave this alone or play off the shorter tees. The men played Blue and the ladies played off the white tees.
Great course that requires some thinking and a good game. Enjoy.
Second time but not the last time.
Overall course conditions good. Greens a little bumpy but very playable. Good course value. Can be tough if you choose the wrong tee boxes.
Ok
Golf course was in ok condition however cart paths were in rough shape (many areas under repair). Nice course in its day but things look old and tired. This said nice layout and pretty decent value for the money.
course in good condition
was very hot a humid index of 108 only played 3 holes due to the temps staff was very understanding we appreciated.
Wonderful conditions and great pace of play
Fun course that’s in great shape. Several cart paths under repair but other than that fairways and greens were well done. Greens roll smoothly with good pace.
I’d highly recommend and plan on making this a normal stop when I visit Hilton Head.
Great Fun Layout
I’ve been coming to Hilton Head for 20+ years and have played several courses. I found the Cupp course to be very enjoyable. I played this course earlier this week for an unbelievable Hot Deal price of $20!!! I’ll admit I didn’t know what to expect for the price but what I found was an awesome layout where the fairways and greens were in perfect shape! The second time I played the Hot Deal cost just $34!! Playing twice on Hilton Head for less than $60 is incredible.
There are several areas where the cart paths are prepped for new concrete but as far as I’m concerned that’s a nonissue because it’s not as if the cart paths affect the playability of the course . Plus they were pouring some new sections while I was there.!
Combination of dogleg rights and lefts as well as straight holes provides a great challenge and variety which I enjoyed. I didn’t play from the tips but just one up and shot 75 and 79 the two times I played. I played the Golden Bear Club at Indigo Run in between the two rounds at Palmetto Hall and must admit the experience at Palmetto Hall was better. Could have been due to pace of play at the Golden Bear. That’s another thing, I was able to play each round under 4 hours!!
I’d highly recommend this club for those who like an enjoyable challenge.
Nice people and well maintained course.. we definitely enjoy playing here
Challenging Track
I live in the Hilton Head area and have played the Cupp course a few times in the past, along with adjacent Arthur Hills. I played again this past weekend on a hot deal where I only paid $20 for the round! I’m a single digit handicapper and let me tell you the Cupp course is a tough layout, narrow fairways and relentless pin placements the day I played. However, it is a good change up from some of the more forgiving courses around so if your looking for a challenge this is the place to play.
Enjoyable Round
Played with two adult sons. Mid day so had the course to ourselves and a couple other groups. Tee boxes, fairways, greens all in great shape. It’s early July so don’t expect glass greens but we did like the Cupp greens a little better than the Hills course. Hills has I believe the new “blended” grass designed to withstand the heat in the coast. Both were great values for the $. Stay in the fairway or that rough will penalize you although very much playable. Nice course
First timer
First time playing this course, have played all over Hilton head and this isn’t fas my favorite. Shot my best score ever. Great conditions
Great Course for the $$$
Fariways were in great shape as well as the tee boxes. Greens were a bit spongy and sometimes slow but beautiful and fairly challenging for a first time course.
Beautiful facility, the clubhouse seems to have been redone recently. Free range balls were included as well which was a nice touch. I’ll definitely be coming back.
