Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

When I scheduled my round there was no notification of the condition of the greens. There was know mention of it when I checked in either. The greens had just been sanded an were, for the most part, unputtable. The course should have given me an option to play or to get a rain check to play when the greens were in better condition. I realize the need for this type of maintenance, but the customer should be given the option to play or not.
hot muggy day
The starter was very friendly and informative. Told us of the large greens and getting the right yardage. The course was in very good shape and the greens were fast and puttable although they were very big with many undulations. It is a very hard course for all players. There are numerous water holes and bunkers. This would not be for the high handicapper. Playing it several times would be helpful.
Enjoyable round, would definitely play again
Our threesome enjoyed playing this course very much. The greens were in great condition, fast and consistent. The fairways were also in good condition. The layout is playable and most enjoyable. The starter was very friendly and helpful. It was our first time playing here and we would definitely like to play this course again.
Great course
Sign up with Brown Golf to get the best deal and play a super course. The greens in particular were fantastic. I am a high handicapper and it was still lots of fun.
A little unfair
This course is very difficult to play without local knowledge as there is trouble everywhere and no good way to know where it is. Some of the greens and pin placements were borderline silly.
Also didn't like that 9 green to 10 tee did not pass the clubhouse.
But it is a very challenging course, in my opinion several shots harder than the course rating, staff was nice, free range balls and it was in good shape.
good course at a great price
good layout that was challenging yet fair - had a good time even though it was a hot afternoon
Great layout
First time at course. Unfortunately very dry and brown Bermuda. Greens in good shape. Pace was great because it was afternoon on a hot day and no one else was playing. Never played on a course that has a true rectangle green with matching traps on either side.... unique?. No stop at clubhouse at turn. Want to play it again once it greens up.
Ok
The greens were great but some of the fairways were a bit dried out and brown. Sneaky water hazards that are not easily seen from the tee box so check the water location before hand on each hole. We played a morning round and paid extra to do so the value can be higher if you play later. Range balls were not limited at that time of day so you could work on your game a bit before the tons if you get there before your tee time which added value to the round for me.
Challenging layout
Played the blue tees. Challenging but not too bad if you hit fairly straight. Fairways dry in spots but understandable due to lack of rain. Greens moderately fast especially if above the hole. Greens hard...didn't leave much of a ball mark. Got a great deal on Golf Now. If I had to pay the asking price, I think you could find something similarly priced in better condition. Try The Club at Savannah Harbor.
Good day at the course
Played the Cup course. I was a single golfer and had first tee time of the day at 7:32AM so pace of play was on me. Greens rolled true, not super fast but medium speed. Tees were pretty torn up with bare spots but looked worse than they played. Fairways were hard and fast but the area has been dry. I chose this course because it is one of a few courses I've never played on HHI and since they were hit pretty hard by Hurricane Matthew last October ( lost 1200 trees on the two courses ), I wanted to check them out and contribute to their recovery. There are better conditioned courses in the area but they are also double the price. Would play this course again.
