Great course!

I absolutely love Metro. It's a course that you can play every week that you won't get sick of. Rounds usually take 4.5 hours. I've never been frustrated by slow play at this course. You always see at least one or two marshals on the course as well, so you know they are keeping up the pace when necessary. Always appreciated.

It's challenging but not too hard/easy. There are long holes and short holes. Some holes are wide open (you can literally hit it anywhere and be ok) and there are some holes that limit where you can go. The greens are always in fantastic shape.

The driving range and short game practice areas are great as well. Friendly staff. Lots of parking.

Can't beat the HOT DEAL!

We got a round at Metro for $15 at 12:30 on a Thursday. Can't beat that price! Metro is a solid, affordable course that they keep in good shape. It can get busy and windy but this day we played it was sunny, not too hot, and pace of play was good until the last two holes where we caught up with a foursome in front of us. They were looking for their balls on the 17th, which is a par 5 with a water hazard on the approach. Definitely recommend Metro, especially if you can grab the hot deal!

so slow!

Only play here if you can budget 6 hours. Get a marshall on this course and keep the pace of play moving. Not sure why it's so slow but the last three times I've played here its been 5.5 hours. Not coming back anytime soon.

Great Introduction to a New Course

Metropolitan had been recommended to me by a friend, so I went off by myself to play at this links-style course. The course surprised me: located directly under the flight path of Oakland International Airport, golfers are 'buzzed' by planes large and small landing on the runways beyond. I had expected to be uncomfortable with all the noise, but found that -- unlike ANY course I've ever played -- the noise of the planes, the airport itself, the nearby construction, the highway traffic outside the fence, were all kind of energizing...there was a vibrancy to the environment that was good to feel in a city that has had tough times. The course itself is long and wide, but not without lots of challenges, including rough gorse at the edges, several environmentally protected areas and some twists and turns to the fairways that make planning your shots a necessity. New to the place, it was a challenge. . . but I went home and made another tee-time there right away.

Weekend golf at its worst

Too bad this beautiful course that is in fantastic shape has to suffer with incredibly slow play. 5+45 to play 18 holes is just wrong. Maybe if there were marshals on the course moving things along play would be quicker. Skip this course on the weekends. I've played here before during the week and it played must faster.

Great practice facility and staff.

Links golf in Oakland? You betcha...

Metro is an East Bay gem. California isn't known for links style design, and there are few options if you're looking. A bit surprising for a Johnny Miller course, not the target design punishing misses style I associate with him. Tall grasses, fairway undulation, and pot style bunkers with an almost unnatural magnetism for golf balls are what you'll find. Contoured greens make for fun putting, but the greens are more rolling and sloped as opposed to 'top shelf, bottom shelf". Embrace your ground game, running shots from 50+yds are very well accepted by most greens. And bring your knock down shots....winds here can move the course from moderate to very difficult. Pace can be slow...fescue rough can hide golf balls, keep it in the fairway. The Grill has good food, but be sure to call in if you want something at the turn...nothing comes out quickly, but when it's delicious when you get it. Very friendly staff, nice putting green, and super practice facility.

Unbelievable Drainage

Considering the amount of rain we've had in the bay area, this course was in incredible shape. We had a huge storm the night before and morning of the rain but there were only a couple of holes that had ponding on the course. Some of the fairways were close to dry...amazing! The wind made an already challenging course really challenging. The pace of play is always a little slow here, but considering this is the only playable course after rain I was just happy to be golfing.

Good condition following wet days

I played here mid-day 2/15 and I was surprised at the good condition of the course. I was expecting it to be soggier. Most of the sand traps were mud and/or water, so that could be improved. But overall, considering how much rain the Bay Area has had over the last month, I was very happy with the conditions.

Happy w/ (partial) round.....considering....

A late tee-time. 1:42, but backed up a bit so went off at 1:50. Gave us 3:20 minutes of play before dark. Pace a bit slow, but not bad. Finished 13 holes. Knowing this course is one of the 2 best draining public courses in SF/Bay Area, despite our 5+ days of torrential rains up to 2 days before I decided to go for it due to the very good weekend deal on GolfNow. The course was in very playable condition (w/ exception of most bunkers). Really enjoyed myself playing w/ 3 exceptional golfers and great guys (one ex-NCAA player and 2 hi-school team members). Approx. a 30 minute drive from home, so well worth the effort just to get out in the fresh air and sunshine for a very enjoyable 13 holes.

Incentivizing Faster Play

Played during Black Friday 2016 and the course was offering incentives to speed up play with the goal of finishing the round in 4:30. We didn't finish in that time, but because the slow play wasn't our fault, we still received fast play "bonuses" for a free bucket of range balls, one-time access to the short game practice area and a $0.01 beer at the end of the round.

Otherwise, the greens were in good shape and rolled true. Great course and definitely one of the better muni courses in the area.

A Links course

Metro offers a challenge because there's typically a very light and comfortable breeze off the San Francisco/Oakland Bay where the courses is located .

The back 9 is rough with long par 5s and water hazards.

An enjoyable play for golfers of all skill levels.

Course conditions

Always one of my favorite munis in the bay area. The course has been affected by the drought with parched fairways, etc. However, the greens are in good shape which I would rate an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Great change of pace

We were in San Francisco for a conference and had an opportunity to play Metropolitan links. Booked on GolfNow for a very reasonable rate. The Uber ride there and back was more than our greens fees. Got there early on a Monday morning and the starter let us go right away. Course was in very good shape. Being a links style course you really have to depend on the directional markers in the fairway to know where to go. Very enjoyable layout, quite a bit of variety for this style of course. Starter was very informative and helpful. Counter guy could use some work. Overall I would recommend this course for anyone visiting the area that wants a nice round, not too far from the city.

Slow Play

Pace of play was horrible. It was fleet week and that might have something to do with it but it just took too long. Over 5 hours to play the course. One of the golfers in our group actually got hit in the fairway by a ball from the group behind us.

It was a hot day and thankfully they had water coolers at most holes. Did not see the cart person at all today. Could have made some good money considering how hot it was.

Set up is fairly good except a few holes where it crosses paths in front of the tee box. Course conditions were good and the practice facility looks very impressive.
