Flat, Windy, and Slow
The course flat and windy. There are a lot if bunkers and a few water hazard to make it interesting. On weekend, it can be slow. There is a sign by the pro shop that asks people to expect finishing in 4 1/2 hour. A couple foursome in front of us was playing slow and mine took 5 hours.
Know which way the winds blowing
Because this is a links course with no trees anywhere, even a mild breeze affects club selections and aim. What would normally feel like a one club wind on a normal course is a two club wind here. The course is in great condition and has a great variety of holes. Short par 4's, dog legs in both directions and strategic bunkering. Great value for the price and much cooler (mid 70's) when the courses East of the tunnel are 100+ degrees.
In the rota
Given the nearby alternatives, Metro is often the first choice. Standard links challenges such as wind and briny air prevail throughout the round. Green complexes are loaded with movement. A good choice when you do not what to go too far for an enjoyable round.
good introduction to a links course.
Golf course has nice staff, food and beverage, and range. Course it self looks perfectly maintained with no dry areas on the fairways. Greens run slightly on the slower side. This is a good course to get used to how a links course works.
Only cons are no traveling drink cart and no range finder in cart.
Great staff - lousy food
Played on a Sunday and it was slow but if you want to play fast on a Sunday you should tee off a lot earlier than 10:30.
Friendliest staff in Bay area, great people working here.
Course can get windy but it is links style golf so it should get windy.
Food gets my vote for worst in the Bay Area. Bring your own food and buy a beer at the turn.
Interesting course
I have played this course many times as it is near Kaiser Hospital and Oakland airport. Handy for waiting at the hospital or go early for a airline pick up . Main downfall of this course is the terrible wind that comes up most of the time.
Nice layout near the airport
The course was challenging due to the wind. Club adjustments were necessary. Greens in great shape. Pace of play was great. Our foursome let a very thankful twosome play through.
Fun course
Course played harder than it looked and lost a few in the esa. Greens were challengeing. Fees were easy on the senior wallet.
Only negative was the lack of signage on front 9 to next tee box glad we were riding.
wide open links experience
Always enjoy playing here. The staff is very friendly, the course is always in good shape and challenging when the wind is blowing.
Great layout, Good condition, great price.
I love this lay out, I think it is one of the best in the East Bay. The greens are in great shape, moderately quick, with breaks you can see and adjust to. Wind is a factor on most holes so club up and hit it lower. I think the back nine is my favorite, I just love the 17th a wonderful dog legged hole that requires an approach shot over water. Just great.
Best value in the Bay Area
Smooth greens, great staff, challenging course. This one will punish you if you miss the fairways - approaches from the wrong angle can be painful!
It is a great course to play. Wind can be a outlier for the game
Normally windy in the afternoon that contribute to a lot of fun in the game.
this course is great i would recomend this place
I enjoyed playing at this course, i will defenitely play there again.
Great Course, Close to the City
Really enjoyed my round yesterday. Finished up in under 4.5 hours and could not have been happier.
Greens Great! Rest of course could use some TLC.
Pace of play was remarkable considering it was a Moday holiday! 4 hours for a threesome of 4-14 handicappers.
Greens were in great shape! Rest of course conditions were average,
Golf Now deal was to include lunch which in this case was hamburgers and chips. When stopping in the grill at the turn to get our lunches, they were out of meat patties and was told it would be a 10 minute wait. Not acceptable IMHO when making the turn. Woud've taken a hot dog but was told that couldn't be substituted. Really? Also a drink apparently was not included with lunch. Really? So we manufactured veggies on a hamburger bun from the condiments provided for your phantom burgers, grabbed some chips and headed out for the inward 9. We laughed our eyes put the door on that experience.
Punched Greens
It drives me crazy that courses are not honest about the conditions when you call to setup a tee time. If I would have known the greens were punched I would have played somewhere else.
Aerated Greens - great layout - effective marshall's
I like this course a lot and would recommend it to an average or better golfer. The green had been recently been aerated when we play so that influenced my rating. We got a great rate and we had a good time. The marshall's are great! They keep play moving while being incredibly polite.
Had a Great Time
I actually played the course 2 days in a row. Both times we started before 7 a.m. so the round was very fast. When we were leaving it seemed crowded so I'm sure the people that teed off later did not finish in under 3 3/4 hours like we did.
The course is really a fun one! You want to keep your ball in the fairway because the rough is pretty tough it a lot of spots. The greens are in great shape and they are pretty challenging too! The greens are also hard so if you can't spin the ball with your irons I would suggest taking 1 less club and your ball will bounce and roll right up to where you want it.
The course has a good mix of short hole, which usually play into the wind, and long holes, which usually play down wind.
There is some waste area that you are not allowed to go into and get your ball. So that's just another reason to stay in the fairways!
All in all this course is fun and fair and the price isn't to bad for weekend golfers!
Fun course but the wind plays...
Played here on a beautiful Oakland Sunday, teed off at 2:30 in the afternoon. Found a great deal on golf now, $25 for Oakland residents with cart. The course was in great condition, greens were stellar per usual. Typically I expect a slow round on a Sunday afternoons but we played the course in roughly 4 hours 45 minutes which was a pleasant surprise. From observing the groups in front of us, it seemed like most players knew what they were doing so that may have helped the pace of play. The wind tends to pick up in the afternoons but the course is still very playable.
Best course when wet
Golfed there when it was raining and the course was in good shape. Very good drainage system. Saw a coyote eating a black bird that messes up the greens but now that there is predator keeping them away from the messy greens, it will be even better.
Overall Metro is one of the best deal in golf in bay area.
