Great links course!!!
Loved this course. A true links style course, which I didn't know existed in the Bay Area. I played in the afternoon which ment it was very windy. Made the course play tough, but it only added to the true links feel.
Tee boxes and fairways were well kept and the greens rolled true. There was a Marshal on the course who kept the pace of play up, which I really appreciated. There are also always lots of good deals that they put up. I'd recommend this course to anyone who has never played a links style course.
Fairway needs improvement.
Pace of play was good. Fairway needs allot of work. Green are in pretty good sharp.
True Links Course, enough undulations, could use more bunkers.
We were first tee off so time wasn't an issue. Maintainance was great. Grounds crew was very considerate as they were working they would pause and let us finish out the hole before continuing with the noise. I enjoyed the driving range. The course was challeging yet fair. Greens have slopes and if you are on the wrong side, you will pay. They really made you think on the greens. Good job, good course. I would play it again.
Like this course and it has some very good features.
Played this course 3 times last year and really liked it. This time there seemed to some ongoing maintenance and the greens haven't yet recovered from aerification, maybe another week or two.
I like this course. The greens are some of the best in the east bay
I like this course, the layout is appealing and the greens are really kept well. Of the courses in the east bay this is must play. They have a large range and a couple of nice putting greens and a short game area where you can shag balls 30 yards or so. The fairways had some issues, i am not sure if its drainage the land that the course is on or what but there was GUR on4 or 5 fairways on the front. The 3.5 rating shocks me, should be over 4.
The greens was well maintained
Only played the back 9 and found out that the front 9 was under repair when I got there. Nevertheless, I was satisfied with the course and found the place in good condition and would come back in the future.
Very pleasant surprise.
This is a surprisingly good course next to Oakland Airport. Then again, Fred Bliss contributed to its design, and he is excellent -- so it should not have been a surprise.
Good challenge, good value
I like the Metro. The conditions of the fairways can sometimes be a little rough, but, as a bay side course, does not seem to have the Goose issues of a track like Shoreline.
Generally, it plays like a links course should. When the wind comes off the bay club selection can be a challenge. The layout flows pretty well, the staff are pretty friendly, they really encourage the play it forward mantra and have pace of play reminders located here and there. Nice to be able to hop off your flight and be on a decent course in minutes.
Rough conditions - course needs work.
I found the course to be challenging enough in the windy conditions but the grounds were in poor shape. Lots of water available but no signs of using any to keep the course up. Lots of bad lies in fairways. Worth what I paid for in the Bay Area - $39 - but probably will not return any time soon.
The greens were Great, love how they were putting.
We got our tee time on Golf Now, very reasonable price. The wind was blowing a gale & we almost didn't go but decided we would make the best of it and so glad we did. Yes, the wind was a challenge but the way the course is designed it wasn't a problem. Hit it low & play target golf. Had a great time. We have played the course many times and always enjoyed our rounds. Thanks for a great day
Not my favorite!
I found this course not to my liking due to the lack of visual clues and vista. Except for the aiming poles, it is visually difficult to play the shots unless you know the layout well enough! We played under pretty ideal weather conditions and it was not all that enjoyable even though I have friends who love playing there every week.
good quality public links-style course
Always a pleasure to play Metro even though the time it takes to play is usually on the long side. It is like a seaside links course in the UK especially when the wind off the bay gets up.
Greens are in good condition. A lot of the long dune-grass rough has been shaved down since the new management took over, probably to improve pace of play, but it saves a lot of lost balls. Grass driving range is good.
One gripe: they took out the GPS from the carts but they haven't yet done a brilliant job of marking distances out on the course.
Reasonably priced
Fairways were in decent condition. From the looks of it, no one who plays the course has a divot tool. Ball marks all over the greens. I suspect it's not the staff's fault as most appeared fresh, but by the end of the day they were all over the greens. Made it difficult to get a smooth putt. Very windy by the bay and airplanes landing fly right over your head.
Links coures with beautiful views and a lot of wind!
Overall this is a course is a good play, with interesting layouts, challenging holes, and a ton of wind. Adding to the ambiance is beautiful views of the city, the Bay, and airplanes flying close by overhead!
Popular play with lots of crowds but not overwhelming. Teed off on-time, waited almost every hole but not more than 5 minutes. Could have been better, could have been worse.
Course has a lot of interesting terrain, some conditions better than others. Fairways are a little burnt out and could need some TLC but the greens were in fantastic shape and the tee boxes were fine.
Course would be average or easy difficulty without wind but the wind adjustments are challenging for those not used to either flighting the ball properly or not used to a links style play.
Oddly did not encounter any beer/drink carts the entire round....on a Sunday afternoon.
Good links course
Metro is probably a 3.5, but I can't give that rating so it gets a 4 because I have a soft spot for the course. First the negatives include lots of birds, their feces, and a long pace of play (about 5 hours on a weekend). The positives, however, are price, niceness of the course, staff, grass range, short game area, and links design. The Bay Area generally offers a lot of target golf and hilly courses, but the linksplay is a nice change of pace, and I prefer metro to monarch bay.
course needs help
very disapointed in course conditions. The fairways were in terrible shape. Most if not all the greens although in nice shape had bird dung ALL OVER the place. On the plus side the greens had just been top dressed but were smooth and rolled nicely but did not make up for the poor fairways and bird dung everywhere. Wont return anytime soon, sorry metro. :o(
compact parking spots, slow pace on weekend, can be windy
played metro recently on a weekend. The course was so overbooked that we had three groups waiting to tee off on every hole from 1-4. It got a little bit better on the back nine, but it took more than 5 hours to finish 18.
the parking spots were so small that if you have a SUV you need to find a spot in between to compacts, or you can't fit in.
the course design is OK, some holes are challenging and fun. condition is OK. Wind can be a major factor. Add two clubs if you are hitting into the wind.
It was a very long day..
I have played this course many times but yesterday was the longest round that I can remember. I realize it was a holiday weekend for some but it still should not be 5.5 hours. We also started 25 minutes late so it was a 6 hour round. I think they put too many people out yesterday. Will I be back? Of course, I will but it was a very long day on the links.
crowded
Course was fun and in decent shape. A little brown but greens in great shape and fast. But.......this course take forever to play. They pack the groups in. Basically waiting before every shot. Let at the 14th hole at 4+ hours
