Rams Hill Golf Club
About
Located at the heart of the immense Anza Borrego State Park, Rams Hill Golf Club sits perched on a hillside overlooking the desert floor. Tom Fazio designed the course, fully utilizing the existing features of the terrain from the natural slopes and undulations to the many lakes and streams. The layout features rolling fairways and elevated greens framed by carefully sculpted bunkers. Each hole has a different character, as well as a different set of challenges, thanks to the natural elevation changes. The final hole is considered a classic Fazio finishing hole and one of the most memorable on the golf course. This par 5 begins with a downhill tee shot to a wide fairway that slopes towards a large lake on the right, then you'll face an uphill third shot to a green protected by an array of threatening bunkers and a large waterfall.

Worth The Drive - Worth Every Penny
This course is amazing. I have played here several times and everyone that I have brought has called this the nicest golf course they have ever played... by far! And I agree. I have played many awesome courses in Southern California, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, La Quinta, and Arizona and this place tops them all! Play here and you will want to move here. It's that nice. The food at the clubhouse is excellent and they have an extensive wine list.
Excellent Course, Worth the Drive
I hadn't played this course in 20 years, so I made the trip to play this Fazio-redesigned course. It turned out to be one the best golf experiences I've had in years. My highlights:
* Course was in excellent shape, tee to green
* Good challenge for the low to mid-handicapper
* 3 hour round (played during the week)
* By far, the friendliest staff you'll ever meet
Next time, I'll spend the night in Borrego Springs. The course is worth playing twice.
Outstanding golf experience in all categories
One of the best golf experiences in the California!! I played Rams Hill in spring 2015 and had such a great time that I returned in March 2016. Once again I was extremely impressed with all aspects of the experience; the golf course was in pristine condition, perfect tee boxes, fairways, roughs and greens, pace of play was quick, great layout with plenty of challenge for players of all skill levels. Mike Setchell - Director of Golf, was very friendly and went out of his way to greet our group and answer questions about the course and facilities. Our group took advantage of the modern clubhouse after the round. The restaurant/bar serves a full menu and has a territorial view of the Borrego Springs valley, mountains and state park. I look forward to playing Rams Hill again!!
Great course don't want to many people to know about it !!!
Please don't come I want it all to myself !!!
Well worth the drive!
If you have never been to Borrego Springs area you may think you are lost by the time you arrive at Rams Hill but I can assure you that it is well worth it! From the moment I reached the clubhouse I was blown away by the friendliness of the staff - they even greeted me at my car in the parking lot and left a cart right by my car for me.
The conditions of the course was one of the best I've seen in a very long time, and I live in Palm Springs area where I have played over 65 courses over the past two years.
The layout was challenging - no two holes are the same. The greens were in impeccable shape, rated an 11.5 the day I played. The views from this course are amazing too.
If you are visiting Palm Springs area and looking for a great course that you won't forget, I heavily suggest checking out Rams Hill Golf Club.
The Gem of the Southland
Rams Hill just never seems to disappoint. Great staff in the clubhouse and a golf course that will keep you coming back for more and more.
The course is 70 miles from the Palm Springs area but is well worth the drive. The course is picturesque and the holes show great creativity from the designer. The rough at this course is nicer then some courses greens in the Palm Springs area.
This course is better than ANYTHING in the Palm Springs area except for the private courses like Big Horn and the Reserve.
Ram's Hill in full bloom
The course was in beautiful shape. It was absolute eye candy with all the blooming plants everywhere. While challenging, it was a great course.
The course was immaculate.
This course was one of the best kept courses I have ever played. The views are spectacular. The fairways are wide and forgiving making it a little less challenging than some advanced players would prefer. I would play it much more frequently if it were not for the long drive to get there. We will play it again.
Hidden Gem
Absolutely beautiful hidden gem only 1 1/2 drive away from Rancho Mirage. The course is in empeccable condition from t to green. The greens are hard, fast with many unseen undulations. The greens are surrounded with sand traps, water etc which makes for challenging approach shots. The fairways allow ample landing, but be careful of all the fairway bunkers that are strategically placed. The course is very challenging but yet very friendly if you play off the proper tees. The best part of the course was the beauty, peacefulness, and the scenery that allowed for an enjoyable game. Will definitely be back to challenge Rams Hill or visa versa.
Must play!
Wow experience
Played 72 holes of golf in 2 days. Great drive from San Diego with amazing scenery which only got better when we arrived. I play a lot of golf in San Diego and not one course comes close to how beautiful and well maintained Rams Hill is from start to finish. Everyone was super helpful and took care of everything from getting us hotel reservations to great tee times. Ate at the restaurant at least 3 times and the food is incredible, never had a better french dip. Fun fun fun course! Already planning another 2 day adventure and can't wait.
This course has great features!
Beautiful setting in Desert environs. Excellent
variety of holes. Top condition fairways and greens.
Lots of elevation changes and some hidden slopes
that require advance reconnaisssance for avoidance.
A must play course and rewarding experience calling
for a replay.
Best Experience while in California
Do to the lack of deserts golf on the east coast; I would describe Rams Hill as a golf course that must be experience by all travelers to the San Diego region. Its lightening fast greens mixed with its beautiful layout, make up my favorite golf experience on the west coast. In my personal option, I would rank Rams Hill a better overall experience than the famous Torrey Pines.
This course is a must play
This course is one of the coolest courses I have ever experienced. You drive in through the mountains, hit desert, and then see nothing but green. I have nothing but great things to say about Ram's Hill. I plan on returning here ASAP. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an incredible round!
6 stars out of 5
It was a fantastic day. Every hole is a picture. Every shot an opportunity to be one with the landscape. I can't say enough about this oasis in the desert. Do yourself a favor and come play here. It is worth the drive from everywhere.
Tanathomas,
Thank you for the flattering feedback! We look forward to having you back!
Awesome day in Borrego Springs
This course is one of the best in the San Diego area.
Thank you Jake! Hope to see you back again soon!
Excellent Experience
Our division 3 golf team came to San Diego for a week of golf. We played 6 different courses all top tier courses but Rams Hill was the number one track we had came across. It is located in the desert with a beautiful layout with the perfect decor. It was perfectly designed and set up for any type of player. We went out there with high expectations and with out a doubt received it. Employees were all so great and welcoming as well. I would highly recommend this course to any golfer because it is no where near a let down.
Thank you for the kind words. We are glad you loved the course as much as we do! On behalf of our staff, thank you for the compliment!
Best Fairways Anywhere
Absolutely would recommend Rams Hill to any golfer and I'm already planning my return visit.
This course as a terrific combination of excellent design and top-notch course conditions. These were the best fairways I have seen in a long time, and the greens were fast and true.
Along with the conditioning, the layout here is challenging but fair. There are generous fairways encouraging you to hit your driver on all the Par 4s and Par 5s, and then the green complexes are just terrific. They make great use of bunkering, mounds, tiers, and subtle elevation change. Greens are big but getting close to the pin will take a great shot.
We also rented the Golfboards for an extra fee and they were a lot of fun. The course was empty by mid-afternoon, and we got around 9 extra holes on the Golfboards in 1hr 12 min.
Thank you so much for coming and playing. We appreciate all the great feedback, and we're glad you had such a great time!
Amazing gem
We had a threesome and were blown away from the very beginning. If you like a scenic golf course you have it. If you like a players golf course you've got it. Talk about an amazing design by Fazio. The staff was amazing, top notch service. I didnt have one but my buddy had a huge breakfast burrito that looked great. We rode the golf boards and had a blast. We will definitely be back.
Thank you for sharing your experience! We hope to see you back soon!
Rams Hill worth it!
I haven't seen any negative reviews of Rams Hill, and this certainly won't be one. The setting is gorgeous, the course was in perfect condition (It was Augusta-perfect, with fairways, rough, tees and greens all deep green, with no bare spots anywhere.) The range is amazing, with ProV balls, individual range finders and multiple targets. I do have one niggle. The Blue distance is nearly 6400, White is about 5800. They need a combo at around 6000-6100.
We paid $80 on GolfNow. Courses in San Diego in similar condition are $120-200.
Getting there is a bit of a chore however. It's about 90 minutes from Escondido, nearly 2 hours from Downtown San Diego and the drive, while spectacular on a motorcycle or in a Porsche, is hard work in a minivan or pickup truck. I think it's a little easier coming from Palm Springs. (The Director of Golf makes the commute from La Quinta in 75 minutes.)
The town of Borrego Springs is pretty tiny, but there is a variety of restaurants and a few things to look at. We're very glad we went, have nothing but good things to say about the course, but will wait a while before tackling that drive again.
Doug,
We know the drive can be rough, but we believe it's absolutely worth it! We appreciate you making the visit to Borrego Springs!
Gem in the desert
Decided to take the drive out to Borrego to play Ram's Hill. Very glad I did. The course is stellar. Excellent conditions from tee to green. Very nice practice facilities as well. Highly recommend
