Rams Hill Golf Club
About
Located at the heart of the immense Anza Borrego State Park, Rams Hill Golf Club sits perched on a hillside overlooking the desert floor. Tom Fazio designed the course, fully utilizing the existing features of the terrain from the natural slopes and undulations to the many lakes and streams. The layout features rolling fairways and elevated greens framed by carefully sculpted bunkers. Each hole has a different character, as well as a different set of challenges, thanks to the natural elevation changes. The final hole is considered a classic Fazio finishing hole and one of the most memorable on the golf course. This par 5 begins with a downhill tee shot to a wide fairway that slopes towards a large lake on the right, then you'll face an uphill third shot to a green protected by an array of threatening bunkers and a large waterfall.

Rams Hill...wow!
Played the Golds (6830/73.2/137) as a 5some with Weber2323, JohnnyGK, RGM2525 & Ringworld in 4H, 45M on an absolutely beautiful day with the temperature in the mid to high 70's. Thanks much to Bill & Rams Hill for having us out.
I read the other reviews of people I know from experience to be good reviewers, saw all the 9.9's and still had to question the validity of those ratings.
I have rated several hundred courses in the 8 years I have been a GK member. Only a select few did I rate above 8.5 overall. I can count on both hands the amount of 10's I have ever rated individual components of a course. Well, add me to the list, you could not get a golf course that allows the public to come in and play in much better condition than this course is. I gave this course four 10's and one 9 on the five individual components that make up the overall GK rating.
The greens were firm, quick (sign out front said 11.8 on the stimp) and rolled about as smooth as a green could be. While they may be quicker, I have attended many PGA Tournaments over the years, and I have never seen greens that rolled any smoother.
The fairways were lush, with almost complete thick coverage everywhere with few divots.
The rough was also very lush, and it is just thick and long enough to make longer clubs a very risky play.
The sand traps were immaculate. If you do not like a course with an abundant amount of traps that are manicured precisely around the edges and filled to the brim with soft, deep, fine sand, then you should not come to this course. As with my comments on the greens, I do not see how a course that allows the general public in could have their traps in better condition.
The tees were flat out excellent, but not immaculate. I only rated them a 9, they were not up to the standards of the rest of the course. Few divots, mowed down close, well maintained.
We had dinner at the onsite restaurant. Their happy hour prices were very reasonable. The food was very good, as was the selection.
I liked the setup of the all grass driving range with the complementary balls. Most of the range is sand, with numerous grass greens set up as targets in 25-30 yard increments so you could hit almost any club and feel like you were hitting into a green.
The customer service was excellent. We were greeted with a cart as we were getting out of our car to put our clubs on. That level of service continued all the way to the same person dropping us off at the car and cleaning our clubs after the round. Pro Shop and restaurant staff were also excellent.
I especially liked the course layout. Tom Fazio design, I can see the high slope rating. Many holes are visually intimidating with 97 well placed traps and a decent amount of water. Four different sets of tees for men, all varied by 400-500 yards. The course was fair, not overly tight and an excellent test of golf. Very enjoyable round and worth the slightly over 400 mile round trip.
Rams Hill is worth the drive...
Played the Golds (6830/73.2/137) as a 3some with Kviser & Sr129 in 4H on a very windy Monday morning with the temperature around 55. It was 34 degrees and snowing when I was 30 miles from the course @ 7 a.m., so the weather conditions were better than expected even with a wind advisory. It seemed like the wind was hurting on about 80% of the shots, constantly changing direction and gusting. We all used the Rams Hill voucher, allowing us to play for the $20 cart fee.
Side note: We had a 7:40 a.m. tee time, just ahead of the men's club. 1st group of the men's club was a 3some, playing the whites, all in their own carts. We were asked to jump 2 holes ahead and come back and play 7-8 later, which we did. However, we only spent 4 hours total actually playing golf, the rest of the time was riding to/from the other side of the course to accommodate 3 guys who wanted to be home for 10:30 coffee and who thought they were entitled to play a 2 1/2 hour round no matter what. 4 hours on this course in 15-25 mph winds was NOT a slow round of golf.
The greens were firm, quick and rolled well. However, while still excellent, they are beginning to show ball mark damage and were not in as good of condition as when I played here in early Jan.
The fairways were very lush, with almost complete thick coverage everywhere with few divots.
The rough was also very lush. Thick and long enough to make longer clubs a very risky play.
The sand traps were immaculate. I don't see how a public course could maintain traps any better than these, and there are close to 100 of them total on the course.
The tees were also immaculate. Few divots, mowed down close, very well maintained.
The customer service was excellent. We were greeted in the parking lot on arrival and offered a ride to our car after the round. The pro shop staff was also excellent.
I liked the setup of the all grass driving range with the complementary balls. Most of the range is sand, with numerous grass greens set up as targets in 25-30 yard increments so you could hit almost any club and feel like you were hitting into a green.

Excellent value for money via Golfnow
We managed to snag a $69 rate while in Borrego Springs. Weather was cooler than usual so was high 80s for our round and was very nice. Wind was manageable too. Loved the course and it was in top notch condition. We will be back.
Return after 30 years!
I played Ram's Hill in the early 1980's when it opened. It was great then and I am happy to say I missed all the problems in between then and now. The course was fabulous. The tees and fairways were immaculate and the greens rolled better than most even with remnants of aeration holes. I used every club in the bag. The clubhouse looked special but due to being summer nothing was available. I will certainly recommend and return.
Rams Hill: A course worthy of a second chance
Rams Hill is simply a miracle in the desert. It's hard to believe that the Tom Fazio course sat closed for four years from 2010-14, the result of a failed developer. It's currently in immaculate shape, with greens and fairways running firm and fast. It almost plays like a links. Shots that land short of the green end up in better shape than approaches that fly to the hole. Rams Hill is making the most of its second life since its grand re-opening in November, 2014. Fazio completely transformed an old 27-hole routing by Ted Robinson dating to the 1980s. His new holes that debuted in 2007 are so interesting and playable. They rarely bring the desert into play. Every feature seems super-sized; The lakes, bunkers, greens and fairways. The beautiful remote setting with mountains in all directions casts a bewitching spell, especially at dawn and dusk. It's a demanding drive on winding canyon roads to get to Rams Hill, but the experience is so worth the effort.
Superb - one of the best I've played
I've played many courses throughout the world and a good few high end but this place blew me away. Greens like Augusta and a cracking course design. Best of all, it's so far from anything that we felt we were on our own private golf course. Overall conditions were superb and a credit to the greenkeepers. I will definitely make a point of playing again next time I'm in the vicinity. If you are considering, don't - just get out there and give it a try, you won't regret it.
Rams Hill
Wow, want to play on tour? Amazing experience! Course was beautiful, tour quality, and yes, I have played on tour.
Great layout
Amazing course. Wonderful people. A hiden gem, but not for long
The Hype is True about Rams Hill
Been hearing alot of great things about Rams Hill and finally played on 4/25/15 and WOW it held up to the HYPE! This course is absolutely a must play and awesome! I definitely recommend it and would say a top 5 course in Southern CA! Fairways are carpet, greens running 12, maybe even 13 this day due to the ridiculous windy conditions that dried it out. We had 30-50 mph winds from the storm but no rain. Bunkers are real sand not packed dirt. Water features are beautiful. The wind made the course extremely difficult especially playing from the very back black tees. #15 was by far the hardest hole, 508 from the blacks par 4 into 35+mph winds. Had 3 birdies but shot way over my handicap at 82. I'll be back in better conditions, and with friends!
Fantastic layout, wonderful course
Aside from the hard greens (new) we had a grand time playing this newly reopened course. The greens will soften over time but even though you could not fly a ball to a pin location we all enjoyed playing here
Perfection everywhere you look
Don't play this course unless you are willing to play the best course in Southern Cal. Greens rolling at 11.8 and perfect in every way. Wall to wall perfection. No more needs to be said.
Desert fun
having heard hat the course was back open and great to play, we had to try it. We were not disappointed.
Course was in great shape, greens were lightning fast.
Don't be above the hole!
We had a great time and will return.
Great course!~!
Course fairways, tee boxes & greens are 5-star. The course has challenging holes as well as some holes which are fairly wide open. This provides both challenges & relief holes which makes it an extremely enjoyable round of golf. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.
To Far
Course is immaculate but it is simply to far from "anything". Definitely not worth anything above $65 not due to course condition but due to distance; it is a miserable drive no matter which way you come from. Then we were embarrassed by bar/restaurant staff after being directed by the concierge to eat from a buffet that was out. Later we were told that it was for the very very few homeowners. Again we were "told" to partake. Anyway, course nice, price to high and distance way to far.
I disagree the drive from San Diego or Orange County is not too far or difficult when you consider you can play a Fazio course that has been rated the best in Southern California for $90 or less. The Stay and Play rates start at $129. I'd rather drive through some of this beautiful country side than being sandwiched between 16 wheelers going 75 mph on Interstate 10. The drive from San Diego, especially if you use S2 is absolutely beautiful. I love the avocado groves, apple orchards, vineyards, and the miles of pastures with Black Angus. Sit back and relax as you drive on oak lined roads alive with wild turkey and deer. It gives you time to decompress and leave your worries behind in the city. I guess “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Also the Rams Hill stay and play rates are exceptionally reasonable, so relax, stay another day and play another round. The memories are priceless.
Amazing
This was the first time for all 4 of us to play this Amazing Golf Course. We drove from Indio CA, had no idea what to expect and cannot wait to play it again and again. We have played many golf courses and we were over the top with the condition of the course, beautifully groomed all holes are so different, it is definately a must play. Hate to share this with everyone as it may become so popular we won"t be able to get a tee time.
Spectacular Conditions
I made the nearly three hour drive to Borrego Springs, because I had heard that this course was in perfect shape. I wasn't disappointed. Everything was just like a PGA event on television. Tee boxes, fairways, rough, and bunkers were immaculate. The greens were firm, fast and smooth. The layout was fun (not too hard) with room to drive the ball and two or three short par fours that could be drivable, depending on which tees one chooses to play. Customer service was top notch and the pace of play was brisk. I would play here often if it wasn't so far from home.
PGA conditioning
The course plays a little harder than the normal resort course because the greens are hard and fast like the PGA. But there are lots of tee boxes and you can make it as easy as you want.
Wow, Just wow
I have played here often years ago when i still lived in julian and the course was under previous ownership....was thrilled to see it re-opened and drove from Oceanside to make a day of it.
Absolutely FANTASTIC condition......perfect in every way....got a great rate on golf now and we headed up.
We usually play JC courses and golf club of california and such but this is what all the others wish they were.
Visually stunning, perfect fairway lies, bunkers with actual sand and greens that are exceptionally true(but really fast).
I will go back often, and recommend to all
Worth the long car drive
About 2 hours from the palm Desert area over bumpy roads, but once you play this very nice course, you forget about everything else.
Rams Hill evaluation
Rams Hill were the best conditions I ever played. and I've played,, pebble beach and the plantation Course, in Hawaii the greens were like carpet,,, the fairways are nice and green. with no bad spots. the fairways are nice and wide for average players. and the bunkers are nice and wide for better players. overall anyone would like this Course

Nickesquire,
Thanks again for taking the time to review the course and provide such positive feedback. We can’t thank you enough. It seems both of these reviews are from experiences earlier this year. We hope to see you back again soon!
