Rams Hill Golf Club

Played this course as part of a marathon 9-rounds in 5 days trip I took to the Coachella Valley.

As someone from the Midwest, this course feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere. But start to finish, the Ram’s Hill experience is excellent!

CONDITIONS: Everything is fantastic. There are some comments below about the greens, and I tend to agree with them: it does appear that there is some sort of paint or substance helping the greens look “more green.” That being said. the greens are firm and fast, and a lot of fun to play.

There are some splotchy parts of fairways, but they seemed to be in areas where you shouldn’t be anyway. The bunkers were perfect.

VALUE: Very fair with a deal time. I’ve also heard the stay and play is a great value too.

LAYOUT: This course winds through the desert and some houses, and just the middle of nowhere in general. A great variety of 3s, 4s, and 5s. You’ll use every club in your bag. The course always felt challenging but never overwhelming. It was a lot of fun to play.

This is not a course to walk… take the cart.

FRIENDLINESS: Tacos on the back 9! You get 2 free tacos around hole #14. Get the pork… it’s excellent! And… AND… a cookie after your round. Not sure what kind it was, but it was awesome. Everyone one of the staff members was helpful and friendly. Also, they responded quickly when our cart died on the front 9.

PACE: A little slow, but just slow enough for us to get a good yardage and enjoy the views. Nothing offensive or distracting.

DIFFICULTY: Fun and challenging, not overwhelming. Fast greens, big bunkers, sloping fairways, false fronts… one or all of these will bite you, but in a fun “let do it again” kind of way.

This was my second trip to play Rams Hill and it is a wonderful layout and the scenery from almost every hole is spectacular. The greens were recently redone and are hard as a rock, but should improve with time. The fairways are not in great condition, but I heard they are getting ready to redo those this year as well. In a couple of years, this will be one of the best courses in California.

Very nice golf facility, but expect a ride getting there. Nice clubhouse, grill/bar and practice areas. Course is tough (especially green complexes), but fair. Many holes look tighter than they really are. Quick greens with slope and collection areas. Good collection of short par 4s. We were fourth out in the morning, but unfortunately groups in front struggled and we're slow. Would play again and recommend.

A great golf course layout, wonderful bermuda greens and while have some fairways grass issues, they were very playable and actually will be replaced with tough Bermuda this summer.

It's a really cool layout at Rams Hill, with lots of challenges awaiting on each hole. Tee boxes are really nice. Fairways are okay but fairly spotty, and still a bit wet from the rains in SoCal just before we arrived. The greens are some of the best I've ever putted on, they rolled extremely true. However they're absolutely rock hard. For that reason they're almost unplayable. If they were at all receptive Rams Hill could be one of the nicest courses I've played.

All the staff were incredibly friendly, and the tacos at the turn and the cookie when you're done are a really nice touch!

Came out for my free birthday round of golf, can’t complain because of that. Very scenic and a good challenge. The greens though were as hard as rock, would never check. Just bounce and roll. Few issues with dry spots disease in the fair ways. But the staff, dining, range, pace of play, views and tee boxes were perfect. Also they load up your clubs in the cart and clean them after the round. You also get free tacos on hole 10 and a delicious cookie after the round. No one does that. Thank you Rams hill, I’ll be back next year.

Stay and play is a deal too, can’t even get a hotel room by itself for under $200 today anywhere.

Love everything about this course - only exception is the conditions of the fairways. I understand that they will be replacing the grass as it was a failed project a couple of years ago. Where there is grass it is fantastic. But way too many bare areas. Greens and tees are all new type of grass and are amazing. Hoping for better fairways in 2025.

The greens were fast, firm, large, and in great shape. Loved the way they are tiered and protected by sand and false fronts.

Love this course. They have changed their greens over the summer and i can honestly say I have never putted on better greens. Absolutely pure. They are very firm because they are new but i cant say enough about how pure they are. I met the superintendent while playing and he told me they are completely changing out the fairway grass this summer. I try and come over and play a couple time a year and we are never disappointed. Back next month but really looking forward to seeing the new improvements.

Greens very fast, undulating making putting very challenging in wind.

Have played many times, including the original course about 30 years ago.

The course is a great layout. Fairways and tee boxes were fantastic, greens are fast but looks like the new turf that doesn’t hold greens at all; in fact, we were warned by the shop staff about the speed.

The course is a long way from everything and so the regular price is probably too high so look for specials.

But it is a great course to play with friendly staff and great food.

Based on all the reviews, we were very excited to try out Rams Hill. We drove down from Palm Springs, landed at the course and went to the putting green. Immediately, you could see a few things weren't as good as all the previous reviews had indicated. There were obvious brown patches as we looked down the first fairway, and the practive green was like painted old school artificial turf. Unfortunately this was pretty common for the entire round. There were number ous dead spots in the fairways - particularly on the front nine - some even roped off. On multiple occasions I had to move my ball off dead areas in the middle of the fairway. While not the worst thing in the world - not what you'd expect at the price point. To be fair, if you did find any green grass on the course you were pretty much guaranteed a fantastic lie.

As for the greens, they were like painted concrete. Unless you are a superstar with your irons, it's almost impossible to stay below the hole unless you land well short of the green. Luckliy there are a lot of backstops that will bring a long shot back towards the hole. The greens are so tight, it's like putting on that old school astroturf carpeting, and they have colorized them to look green. They did roll very true and there was barely a bounce to be found - but if you don't stay below the hole, a 2-putt is a good outcome.

The staff were mostly pleasant, the starter in particular, but nowhere near the glowing reviews of previous posters. The tacos at 14 - meh. But when you are in the middle of a 5 hour round, you take what you can get.

This course should NEVER take five hours to play. The fairways are for the most part open and generous. Didn't have to look for a ball once. You should be able to get in and out in 4 hours. But, with no marshall, and a foursome two groups ahead of us who thought they were Arnie and Jack and greens, bam - 5 hour round.

Overall, just a very disappointing experience. Based on all the reviews, we thought this would just be a homerun. But unfortunately, the fairways and greens made this the weakest of the 9 courses we have played on our trip to San Diego and Palm Springs. The layout really is fantastic though, and if the fairways and greens were in better shape, it would have been an awesome experience.

We had such high hopes and really felt Rams Hill was the worst bang for our buck on the trip.
